I went to the local 99 cent store in Gilroy California yesterday and noticed that I was being charged one dollar on every item I bought. Although it is just a penny and I can afford a penny, it’s the fact that I’m being lied to one more time that bothers me.

The way they cover this is once you are in the store, some signs have the fine print where it’s not really 99 cents, it’s 99.99 cents. When you get to the cash register however the screen indicates that they are rounding the 99.99 cents up to a dollar, so it’s not really even 99.99 cents. It is actually $1.00.

When a store uses 99 cents as it’s identity stating that you will never pay more and 99 cents for anything and then you end up paying a dollar, that’s more than just a 1 cent fib. It makes the whole premise of your business model a lie. It makes your identity a lie. It makes your brand a lie. That’s a big lie. It takes the magic out of the 99 cent name. And once the magic is gone then you realize that you probably could get the same item at Walmart or Costco for even less.

So Dvorak/blog readers – How do you feel about paying a buck at the 99 cent store? Do you think they are being smart about this by milking the customer for that extra penny at the expense of their very identity?

At least 50 people where evacuated from the Children’s Court of Victoria in Melbourne’s CBD this morning after security officers used capsicum spray to stop a fight between two males.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said protective services officers had used the spray when a fight broke out between the pair on the first floor of the court building on Little Lonsdale Street.

Everyone in the building, including those in its nine court rooms, were evacuated between 10.30 and 11am, a court spokeswoman said this morning.

She said this was because the capsicum spray was spread throughout the complex by the building’s airconditioning system.

No one was injured.

The fight occurred outside a court room. Police will question the two males involved.

While the iPad was officially announced in January, the iPad will not be available for purchase until late March. However, it seems some iPads have been seeded into the wild as David Vogler claims to have seen one in a New York City Starbucks (photo).

If you’re having trouble waiting for the iPad to arrive, Jess Silverstone, the lead artist for Revolutionary Concepts put together a cut-out of the Apple iPad that you can print yourself.

The cutout is provided in two separate PNG files (iPad Front 664KB and iPad Rear 377KB). Each cutout can fit on standard A4 (8.3 x 11.7 inches) paper, but your printer has to be capable of borderless printing to achieve close to actual iPad dimensions. The real iPad dimensions are 9.56 inches x 7.47 inches x 0.5 inches. They’ve even included a cutout of the A4 processor you can include for “improved performance”.
