Look, let's be honest here. I like monopolies, especially Microsoft. Why? Because they make people like myself very wealthy. I had Microsoft stock, and became very wealthy selling it over the years. I drive a B-mer, have a large house in a Seattle suburb, 3 kids and an easy life. Do you envy me? It is because you are pathetic.

There have always been monopolies, and always will be, just as there have always been those of us who are superior to everybody else. So get over it folks. There will always be the geniuses like me who side with intelligence, guts, and power, and then there will be the losers and poor fools who support our monopolies because they are ignorant about or don't have access to alternatives (because we crushed the alternatives under our heel). Or they somehow think that they will get a shine from being associated with a winner like us, because they secretly know that they themselves are losers.

There are so many people out there who truly believe that monopolies are to their benefit. I will gladly take their money by overcharging them for our bug-ridden and grossly insecure products. If they willingly hand over their money to us, so be it. We didn't put a gun to their heads, did we? The alternatives are out there if you know where to look. It's true, we haven't completely destroyed them (yet). So get out there and use the alternatives, or quit your whining.

You think Apple is a threat to us? Ha, they are puny. Don't worry, we will crush them in time. Think Linux will ever get anywhere? HA! None of the OEMs will ever install it because if they do, we will cut them off, and their sales will fall off the map and they will disappear. It takes a relatively smart, computer-savy person to install Linux on a machine themselves. Most people won't even go to the trouble and would rather buy what we shovel down their throats. And they will say, "Thank you, I love Microsoft products because they make me feel like a winner." And I will say thank you, you puny pathetic loser, and take their money. And when a virus overruns their system, I will tell them it is time to upgrade to Vista for only $200.

Monopolies are some of the most profitable entities to ever exist. It's like a mafia racket. We lie, cheat, steal, extort, and then we tell you it's the free enterprise system when you complain about it. That's the way it goes in capitalism. Whoever is most willing to bend or break the rules wins in the end. The fewer rules the better, and no rules is best. If we could hire thugs to beat up all the Linux geeks and Apple wanna-bes, don't you think we would do it? If you don't understand that, then you don't understand anything at all.

As was so well put in #16, XP is exactly the same. If Microsoft is so kind and benevolent, why then, if you've purchased their OS in good faith, then say, you have to change your motherboard due to failure beyond your control, YOU'RE REQUIRED TO EITHER PURCHASE A NEW LICENSE KEY OR A COMPLETELY NEW OS? As a matter of fact, it says right on the accompanying paperwork the sole reason for you having to activate XP with Microsoft is for MS to have a complete "snapshot" of your entire system, therefore when you change or upgrade a piece of equipment, well, guess what? You're system is NO LONGER RECOGNIZED by Microsoft and you're system is rendered useless by none other then the WGA and you're labled a "thief" or a "pirate". Huh. Go figure that one.

By the way, the reason I know this to be true? It just happened to me and only because of a formal complaint filed with the Washington State Attorney Generals Office filed by myself, was I able to get a fully licencensed, full version of XP Pro right out of the box free of charge straight from Microsoft. If I were really in the wrong, they wouldn't have done so, end of story.

MS is a Monopoly period and anyone that thinks they are not a Monopoly only need to go out and get a copy of VISTA.

If MS is allowed to get VISTA on everyone’s computer it will be the end of any competition in the Computer Industry using DRM and Trusted Computing that MS has hidden in the new OS. Did you know that MS worked with the NSA before releasing VISTA to market? Does backdoor come to mind, anyone?

Vista will call home every week to make sure all the drivers, hardware, and content on your computer is properly licensed by MS and if it is not compliant Vista will cease to operate by displaying a limited version of IE 7 so you can contact MS to pay for another "Authorization Serial Number"

I urge all to read the article published by well-known security expert Peter Gutman, "A Cost Analysis of Windows Vista Content Protection.”
http://www.cs.auckland.ac.nz/~pgut001/pubs/vista_cost.html

If that is not enough to shock you then read about the Plans envisioned by MS to implement even more stringent set of DRM measures with additional anti competitive implications.

I urge all to read MS David Marsh's Power Point presentation over at
http://badvista.fsf.org/blog/analysis-of-microsoft-s-suicide-note-part-2
Analyzed by computer expert Oliver Day.

Click on the links to learn how they intend to completely control anything on your Computer with DRM and will be able to disable hardware, software, and content that does not pay MS for a license, which could result in the product you, purchased becoming useless.

Microsoft has lost sight of what the customer wants and has become an out of control predator that intends to put everyone out of business that does not license its products through MS.

I would think that at the very least a good attorney could argue they are entering your computer without a search warrant to search your files and data with impunity. Once you click the EULA, they will be doing just that with your coerced agreement.

If allowed to get away with this outrageous plan, MS will become the real “Big Brother” from the novel 1984.

This is in response to user Larry's comment: "I seem to remember from school that the US of A is a free country and a nation that has succeeded because of Capitalism not lawyer and judges..."

Seriously, Larry, you ought to look into how modern capitalism came about. Modern US-style capitalism was instituted by lawyers and judges. So without making value-based judgments about capitalism undermining democracy, I only say please examine the history a little more carefully.

There have been many alternatives that are better products than those sold by M$. OS/2, Netscape, Word Perfect, etc. The problem has many aspects. If somneone buys a computer with WinDoZe on it, they have paid for the "privledge" of using it. Why would they remove something from their computer that they have alreay been forced to pay for? OS/2 was a much better product in so many ways, but the biggest thing it lacked was applications. So they added WinDoZe to it. However, M$ continued to modify WinDoZe programs so they wouldn't run on OS/2. So, if you purchased a copy of OS/2 with WinDoZe, M$ made money off of that because IBM paid M$ for it, and yet they crippled their programs for it in order to force people to buy WinDoZe as well. Back in the late 80s, M$ required computer sellers to sell a license to M$-DOS for EVERY computer they sold. M$ would actually come in and demand to look at your books to prove that you did so. If you sold a customer a complete system "unassembled" without DOS, they would take that as trying to screw them, so they would raise your fee for selling DOS. When WinDoZe v3.1 came out, they tied it to DOS and required that you sell a license for DOS & WinDoZe with EVERY system you sold. So, when a customer wanted to purchase a system preloaded with OS/2 or Unix, they were required to spend MORE because you HAD to FORCE them to pay for something they didn't ask for. This went on for YEARS! And NOTHING was EVER done about it. That's where the "WinDoZe tax" idea came about. Personally, I have only puchased 1 licensed copy of WinDoZe. It came in my copy os OS/2 v2.1. Never used it other than to see if it actually worked. I've NEVER purchased a brand new machine and never will. I will always rebuild older computers(like this Thinkpad 390X, P-III 450Mhz running openSuSE v10.1) and put Linux on them. Why did I go with Linux? No more real OS/2 support, and Linux runs on all my hardware, doesn't get viruses or spyware, doesn't lock up unless I screw it up, oh, and runs on old machines. I just bought a used Dell Workstation with an XP Pro key. I won't use it, but it will be there for when I sell it.

Linux has it's own issues that keep it from broader acceptance. The biggest is the lack of a universal package system. With WinDoZe, you can go to the store, but a prorgam, and plug the CD in, and it will automagically install and work(with the normal reboot necessary). Until Linux has this, it will continue to fail as a Desktop platform.

I could go on, but the requirement of selling a copy of DOS/WinDoZe for every computer you sold should have been enough to find M$ guilty. Yet, our own government didn't even charge them with it? Why not? Because they WANT you to run WinDoZe. That way, they have easy access to your files. If you hear about someone getting arrested and their computers confiscated, if they have WinDoZe, then law enforcement has what they need almost immediately. Try that with Linux or any of the BSDs and an encrypted file system. Of course, Web access and logs are helping to make this less of an issue. But, for those who think that we have any privacy, I have some beach front property in Montana for sale......

I bought a new garage, a fancy one with a carpenter bench and automatic doors. When it was finished, I of course went inside and discovered that it already was occupied with a blue Ford. Not a bad car at all but I already owned a SAAB that I'm quite pleased with. I was wondering what that Blue Ford was doing in my garage so i contacted the salesperson at the construction company, but he told me that they only delivers garages with a Ford, and so does all leading construction companies and many carpenters as well. If I had asked for it, I could have gotten a Ford with a stronger engine, sun roof and aluminum rims for an small extra fee, he told me. But because I had already opened the garage door i had to be content with whats delivered or pay full price for a new garage. I found out that Ford believed that there would be less car thefts if every garage was delivered with a car and thats why they forced that kind of a deal on the construction companies.

Now I talked to my neighbors. The closest neighbor hadn't fought much about the fact that there was a car in there garage. They just went into there garage, drove to work and thats that. I had the impression that they thought they where driving a garage.
The Fords where all in different models, ages and condition depending on the age of the garage. Some of them didn't have brakes and seat belts. Some of them couldn't be locked and some of them would only start when the whether was dry and warm. Many of the cars would stop running when you put them in the highest gear. Some of the involuntary Ford owners where a bit unhappy but at the same time dejected.

Down the street I found a neighbor with a shiny new sports car standing on his yard all abandoned. The owner couldn't figure out how to get the Ford out of his garage to make space for his Ferrari.

Things where starting to look rather hopeless, but in the next block I found people with jeeps, sport cars vintage cars, hot rods and ordinary family cars in there garages Some of the people had taken there Fords to the scrapheap. Others where using them from time to time for simple tasks. Some had even tried to get backthe money they where forced to pay for there Ford, but they hadn't received a penny.

The alarm clock woke me up with a bang. The covering had fallen to the flour but my pyjamas was wet. Hmm nice to wake up despite its Monday. Nice to Wake up to the real world and avoid any bad dreams, because this can't be happening in the real wold? Or can it ?

This story mentions Ford cars but it could as well be any other car manufacturers and has nothing with the Ford company to do.

the Ford brand is owned by Ford motor company all rights reserved
all other brands are owned by there specific owners to.

Things where starting to look rather hopeless, but in the next block I found people with jeeps, sport cars vintage cars, hot rods and ordinary family cars in there garages Some of the people had taken there Fords to the scrapheap. Others where using them from time to time for simple tasks. Some had even tried to get backthe money they where forced to pay for there Ford, but they hadn’t received a penny.

The alarm clock woke me up with a bang. The covering had fallen to the flour but my pyjamas was wet. Hmm nice to wake up despite its Monday. Nice to Wake up to the real world and avoid any bad dreams, because this can’t be happening in the real wold? Or can it ?

This story mentions Ford cars but it could as well be any other car manufacturers and has nothing with the Ford company to do.

the Ford brand is owned by Ford motor company all rights reserved
all other brands are owned by there specific owners to.

Well, I apologize for using Firefox to comment about Microsoft, but here goes One gains market share by any of a number of means. Sometimes it's having a good product, other times it might be predatory practices in the market place. MS may or may not have good products, but the lawsuit is alleging Microsoft achieved its position through illegal predatory behavior. The MS memos seem to support that and it will be interesting to see how MS explains that away when it's their turn to talk. I hope that this time, they don't leave their lawyers out on a limb like they did in the DOJ when they tricked them into lying to the judge about whether Internet Explorer could be removed from the desktop. However, I do get a warm feeling every time the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation gives more of my money to good causes. I think I heard we are fighting malaria this week. Bully!

Change the Beatles line "lonely" and you get "Where are all the 'STUPID' people" and you would find a lot of them writing comments here (yes, me too).

Go back and read some US history about the "Robber Barons" and the oil companies (OH! DO YOU STILL THINK ALL OF THEM TOGETHER AREN'T FIXING PRICES? - BUT I DIGRESS)....

In any case, there were good reasons why laws were passed to prohibit monopolies, mainly to stop their abuse of the people.

Do you think that fits what MicroSap is doing to us?

"Of course" in the words of Dennis Miller, "that's jus one man's opinion"

I agree with comment #6 and disagree with comment #8. Comment #6 states "it has always been the peoples choice to support, with there paycheck." This is absolutely true.

If you don't like Microsoft, then I encourage you to install Linux at home, your office, your school, etc. The reason you don't do this is because you will run into countless installation and compatibility issues, and then have very little support to help get you past your problems.

I'm sick of people using Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Internet Explorer to email in complaints about how bad Microsoft is. If you don't like Microsoft, then stop using their products.

Many of us appreciate how easy Microsoft makes it to use their products, and would rather Microsoft spend its money on new product development instead of paying lawers to defend themselves.

After reading the opening statements above, the plantiffs should rest and ask the judge to send the case to the jury. The response from the jury, after a cup of coffee, should come back to the judge "GUILTY"

Okay I don't often comment on posts by Larry's comment #6 above just pushed me over the edge. The reason these type of lawsuits move forward is because many people think just like Larry. Their distrust of Microsoft is so great that they believe that any sofware must be better, easier and more legitimate that Microsoft's software. That belif foster comments like 'Linux can beat Micrsoft hands down if the developers can make it more simple and more compatible." That makes about as much sense as "The Ford Mustang can beat the Ferrari Enzo hands down if the engineers would just design it better and use a bigger engine."

I seem to remember from school that the US of A is a free country and a nation that has succeeded because of Capitalism not lawyer and judges or shall we say “ambulance chasers” harassing everyone. If you go back to the beginning of our Nation you will find monopolies. It has always been the peoples choice to support, with there paycheck, whom they want. Take for instance Linux. Linux can beat Microsoft hands down if the developers make it more simple and more compatible.

@ #3 - it's indicative of the monopolistic crap we have to deal with. MS Word is so awful that one would expect competition would flourish. But no real competition exists.

The next monopolies to emerge and cease innovation are the communications companies. Verizon, Sprint, Comcast, etc. The possibilities for innovation are endless. But they threaten these companies large revenue stream. Just you wait.
