For me to poop on!!

Exclusive photos of dastardly censorship of hapless puppet-dog!

HDNet has been broadcasting the GOP convention with a live HD feed. Once in a while you get to see some hilarious scenes if you can stop action the feed. I take these pictures I call fair-use time-slices and managed to capture an interesting scene involving Truimph the Insult Comic Dog (from the Conan O’Brien Show)being rousted by security at the GOP Convention. I assume Conan will discuss this on the air tonight or tomorrow.

  1. Bob says:

Beautiful shots. I always wondered what the guy behind Triumph looked like. That would have been quite the coup, to poop on the pres. Sr. Ah, well. I’m guessing he’ll have to sign some kind of loyalty oath to get close to W or Cheney, maybe. 🙂

  2. John C. Dvorak says:

I’m not sure any picture of him has been posted. They keep him out of the way by various agreements. Now you know.

  3. T.C. Moore says:

“They keep [the guy behind Triumph] out of the way by various agreements.” You really are a conspiracy theorist, John. I remember Conan saying something to the effect of “[Robert Smigel] is so ugly and talentless, the camera naturally shies away from him. Get off the set you hack!” And his head is constantly bobbing into the picture sometimes, like when he’s hiding behind Conan’s desk or making fun of Star Wars attendees waiting on the street.

Stop pretending you have access to NBC’s top-secret legal contracts, John! For your own mental well being. The “Inside Track” only runs so far.

Meanwhile, Do you watch TV all day? The Republican Convention no less! When do you write? Not that I don’t love your writing and Blog. Do you have HD Tivo or something? How did you freeze the picture? What the hell is Indigo? Sometimes your posts are unintelligible, even for your geeky target audience!?@$%$#

    tom

P.S. Everything but the Tivo question (of course) is rhetorical.

  4. John C. Dvorak says:

I watch the conventions. They are only on once every 4 years for gosh sakes and the networks avoid them since they are so staged. I’m not constantly watching TV. In fact I watch less TV than ever. I do not know why Smigel is never seen. But he is never seen. Thus I figure something is going on. He doesn’t look any worse than anyone else on TV so that comment that he is ugly and talentless is total bullshit. To be honest I reckon he isn’t seen because they’d have to pay him more money. Is that a conspiracy too?

  5. Billso says:

I don’t have a television. And yet, the GOP convention is the most pathetic thing I’ve ever seen.

  6. Ed Campbell says:

If he appears, he has to be paid scale — which used to be $300-400. I imagine it’s more, nowadays. And that’s if he isn’t “seen” speaking any lines.

  7. Anonymously says:

So how do you do the “time slices”? ATI HD-Wonder or something?

  8. John C. Dvorak says:

I’ll probably put upa page about this. But it’s rather simple. I’m using the Dish Network 921 Digital HD-PVR. This unit has been highly criticised by AV-websites mostly because the early units were quite buggy. Mine is great. I project the image to 90-inches. Freeze frame and single step through a scene to get that ONE COOL FRAME then shoot it with a digital camera. It’s actually faster than getting a jpeg out of an AVID editor and into the web. I’m using a 3-CCD projector and still getting some moire though. I’m working on that.

  9. T.C. Moore says:

Sorry, I wasn’t clear: Conan’s comment about his being ugly and talentless was a joke (Conan’s). The point is that Smigel is just one of the guys. A long time writer for Conan and SNL, and creator of by far the funniest bit on late night TV (Triumph). Surely he makes more than scale.

You don’t see him because he’s a puppeteer! Sheesh. You’re not supposed to see the person pulling the strings. But he barely even tries to hide himself, and you all make it sound like they’re throwing a blanket over his face when the camera slips or something.

I finally remembered Dish Network receivers come with a DVR built-in. I wonder how many customers realize that.

This whole Time-Slice idea is very cool, John. I retract all my teasing about watching too much TV. You are saving me the trouble of watching a convention even the principals find boring and pointless.
