Typewriter Serial Number Database
WOW. Who comes up with this stuff?

The “Database” is probably the biggest source of typewriter serial numbers in the Internet today. As far as I know, it’s even the most complete collection of serial numbers ever. But when you see the number of given brand names, it’s still only a beginning.

This side was created for collectors of antique typewriters, with the help of many old documents and other collectors. Its primary task is to help collectors, to date their typewriters, by the serial numbers of the machines. The data in the database is pretty reliable, since listings of different sources were compared and evaluated, but please don’t hold me responsible for any mistakes in old listings. For some of the brands, there are no serial numbers available yet and I try to help with some information about the years of production in these cases. Step by step, I’ll add data, which was researched by other collectors or by myself. In my opinion, it’s very important to focus this information in the database, even when it might be fragmentary sometimes. This data will appear in green colour – green stands for the hope :-)

I look in the database and found serial close to the one I am looking but not the exact number. I have a Smith Corona Sterling portable manual serial number 5A3822319. If it is between two numbers and years, can I assume it was made between 1953 and 1954 where serial number 5A371577 and 5A450886 are?
    Thanks for your help

A few months ago I was surfing the web and saw a collage photo of a series of portable typewriters and arrows pointing to where on them you locate their serial number. I wanted to find that picture again but I can’t locate it anywhere. Has anybody seen this?

    Thanks,
    Ryan

I was researching a Royal KMG model with serial number 4022177. Now this is weird … on the SN database site, they have the KMG starting production in 1949 (I’ve read that elsewhere, too) and starting serial numbers for 1949 at 4110000 … which leads me to wonder: What’s the deal with my KMG model’s number??? Was it a demo, produced early … or maybe the first of it’s kind, before 1949? Any ideas? And who should I contact to find out more about this vintage machine?

Hello John, I found your site very helpful in finding my typewriter’s year of production. Unfortunately, I am not able to find out the exact model of my Olympia. I’m pretty sure it is a SM model, it may be SM2 or SM3, given that it has not the keys to the right and left of the spacebar, and the Olympia logo is right above the keyboard. The problems are: (1) this typewriter does not have the TAB key, (2) instead of the four dots key, it has a key marked as “M.R.”, maybe because (3) this has spanish keyboard so it has the Ñ key. I really appreciate some help because I would like to sell this machine and get a proper amount of money for it. I can e-mail you pictures if you want. Thank you very much, and greetings from Mexico.

Hi. Let me first say that your site is so helpful; I was able to figure out that I have a 1959 Olympia SM3 De Luxe, Serial #1369401.

Everything seems to be working great, except that I can’t adjust the left margin. I move the margin stop to my desired position, but when I return the carriage it only goes back to the middle of the typewriter, not over to the left where I set the margin stop. However, if I have the shift lock on, it will go to the left as it should. Does this ring any bells for you as to what could be wrong?

Lastly, with some research, it seems that this model could sell for about $200. Does that seem right to you?

Again, thank you so much for your time and effort with the site – very helpful and easy to figure out which model year you have.

    Tina

  19. Kelsey says:

Hi! I just bought a black Royal Quiet De Luxe typewriter, and am trying to figure out exactly what year it is; it looks like the ’41 model, but I would like to know exactly when it was made. The serial number is: A1359479. Thanks for any and all help you could give me!

    • Kelsey says:

I should also note that it says “Made In Canada” on the front, although it is very difficult to read. The previous owner – whoever they are and for whatever reason – had the ‘Royal’ logo on the front and back, as well as the “Made In Canada” covered up with black hockey tape?! Some people are bizarre… I do live in Canada so was wondering if maybe it was illegal to have it here at some point, since it says “Not for export” on the back, and that maybe that was why they had all of the logos covered up. Anyway, I haven’t been able to find any information on them even being made in Canada – I know they were made in Connecticut so this is very confusing to me.

I bought it because it’s amazingly beautiful and will provide less distraction when writing than a computer does! I don’t care about how valuable it is – although that would be pretty cool information to have – so just info about the whole Canada-made situation and what year it was made would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks again to any and all who can help me out with this mystery!
