The 145 girl: How does showing this pic going to dissuade students from smoking dope?

Farrand Field 4-20-2006 — Welcome to Facist Colorado. The University recently sent a photographer over to some dope smoking event and took a lot of pictures. Now they want to bust the kids after the fact. Why didn’t these weenies do it during the event?

The University is offering a reward for the identification of any of the individuals pictured below. After reviewing the photos (click on a photo for a larger image), you may claim the reward by following the directions below:

So what? It’s very similar to catching a bank robber on tape, or a speed trap camera/red light camera.

yeah they’re kind of wimpy and if they know the pot smokers are out, they should bust them, but there is some sort of precedence.

Without smelling or inspecting the cigarettes and pipes, how could the police prove that the the contents is marijuana instead of, say, loose tobacco?

This is clearly meant more to embarrass and intimidate than to actually prosecute. You commit an illegally act in public, being forewarned of video surveillance, it’s hard for me to have sympathy. This isn’t about civil disobedience, it’s about kids partying. If I saw my kid on this site, while paying the education tab, something would be dissuaded.

Interesting. Following the link, the first picture is of signs on the field where these were taken, indicating the field was closed and there would be photographic surveillance. I wonder what setup they used – the photos look like they were taken by someone right there, at eye level and fairly close.

How could you possibly use a photograph of someone holding what “looks” like a joint? Unless they have the actual joint or arrested her in possession of a controlled substance…a photo means nothing. A defense lawyer would have a field day with this.

You could have someone in a photo surrounded by mounds of white, flaky powder….but how could you possibly tell if it’s cocaine or flour? How could you know for sure that the thing in this girls hand IS marijuana, or just a clove cigarette? Where’s the proof?

It would appear that the school’s Vice Chancellor for Administration got wind of this pro-cannabis event and decided to close the park in order to prevent it from happening. Now, the campus cops will probably charge these college kids with criminal trespass.

Way to GO, U of C Campus Police! You are helping to start out the professional careers of hundreds of students by bestowing them with a criminal record. All because of the Vice Chancellor’s hair brained idea to close a school park in order to stop one gathering. KUDOS, BRAVO, and HAZZAH! Another victimless crime is punished.

I guess these students will be forced to transfer to UC Berkeley.

Actually, if you follow and read the link, the police are essentially busting people for trespassing. The police know they haven’t got a chance of convicting anyone of smoking pot.

it seems that CU wanted a change of venue for 4/20 4:20 celebration, but that the students did not comply. They arrested the individual who violently broke through the barricade, but are going to pick off a few of the folks ignored the signs presumably in order to have some impact on the location of next year’s event.

You wouldn’t – for a criminal prosecution.

But this is University police – so they can use it put people on “double, secret probation”, and make notes about “suspicious activity” in the student’s file. Once they know the student’s identity, they can also send the photo to the student’s parents – “to keep the parent(s) informed”.

The creepy thing about that site is all the pictures with the “IDENTIFIED” branding on some of the pictures. Why do I get the feeling that those poor kids got visited in the middle of the night, from guys in off the rack suits, and a single ear bud in the right ear, never to be heard from again.

As of now, there are 150 pictures, and 31 have been identified. There is a $50 reward for being the first caller for each pictured person. I reckon before and after pictures of the callers would be interesting, since they’re no doubt deserving of a good old fashioned beating.

As for the kids smoking pot, they look just fine to me, and I can’t see why anyone would hassle them.

I live in American Samoa, a U.S. Terrtitory where it is an automatic five years in a tropical prison camp if you come onto the island with so much as a roach in your luggage. Any amount of marijuana is a five year felony. They even have drug dogs at customs who smell each and every suitcase. It’s nuts.

United States Constitution, Amendment 1:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

It looks to me like they were utilitzing their First Amendment Rights, to peaceably assemble in protest of government actions. The “trespass” is highly questionable – was there an event scheduled for the field that they interrupted? Libel might be implied as well, since the “authorities” are saying they were doing something illegal, without physical evidence. What about entrapment? Any attorneys out there?

It’s funny, last year the kids rushed the field when the cops had the sprinklers on. The kids just turned the sprinklers towards the cops or just plain broke them so they would shoot straight up into the air. This is the first year they’ve had “Event Staff” at it, but I do believe there were more cops last year, and they were there for longer.

How is enforcing the law on school grounds fascist?

As the classic saying goes – If they don’t like the law, write your congressman. Not enforcing the law in the face of people blatantly breaking it, would be negligent on the School’s part too, and probably result in public outcry and/or lawsuits for basically condoning illegal activity.

Is using a stoplight camera to take a picture of someone running a red light and then sending them a ticket in the mail, fascist too?

p.s. That chic was freakin smokin. And I’m not talkin about the blunt.

That kind of intrusiveness against our own citizens for smoking pot is utterly ridiculous….all this surveillance crap was supposed to catch terrorists…dont you all remember that s why you voted it in in the first place? I sure as hell didnt because i know what a trojan horse this technology really is. Another thing is what kind of kangaroo court will mere pictures work in? How do they know it wasnt tobacco like someone else mentioned. Colorado is another example of a state turning against its own citizens to make money off of petty offenses. Lets just have every citizen buy thier own government surveillance camera and put in in our arses…will that appease you security freaks? I bet it would….Viva La Revolution!

Let them go!!! The people in these pictures are hard working college students who like a little grass. Some will grow out of it, others won’t. The point is; they aren’t hurting anything by peacefully congregating to take part in a shared intrest. Yes, marijuana is illegal, and therefore “socially unacceptable”. Really though, people on marijuana are more coherrent, and less violent than those on alcohol. It’s good to see America’s youth standing for something, even if there are other world wide issues that need to be addressed. ALWAYS QUESTION AUTHORITY!!!

Given that they are charging these people with trespassing, isn’t it odd that they took pictures only of people smoking, and none of the people without smoking materials visible?

I was there! The fact that only 200 pictures were taken is amazing. I could have done that in the 15 minutes I was there. There were thousands. In any event, this is ridiculus.
