He’s so cute. One day he will make one fine rug

Should this baby bear be killed? – Metro.co.uk:Animal rights activists are calling for a baby polar bear raised by humans to be killed.
The abandoned polar bear cub named Knut looks cute, cuddly and has become a front-page media darling, but now the activists insist he would have been better off dead than raised by humans.

“Feeding by hand is not species-appropriate but a gross violation of animal protection laws,” animal rights activist Frank Albrecht was quoted as saying by the mass-circulation Bild daily, which has featured regular photo spreads tracking fuzzy Knut’s frolicking.
“The zoo must kill the bear,” he added.

By the way, I was being sarcastic in the caption of the picture.

  1. James Hill says:

Death for vengence (see, the right wing) or death for purpose (see, the left wing) is still death. I say kill the activists: If they’re so committed, they won’t mind.

  2. curmudgen says:

Animal rights activist Frank Albrecht, kiss my ass you Nazi Bastard.

  3. Ben Drinkin says:

Was Frank raised by bears, or was he actually fed and cared for by human hands as well?

  4. Ben Drinkin says:

By the way. If you’re looking for a really soft rug to lie down on in front of a fireplace, might I suggest Grandma-skin.

  5. Mac Guy says:

What’s next? Re-implement clubbing baby seals?

  6. TJGeezer says:

Jeez, there I go agreeing with James Hill again.

  7. Damon Rondeau says:

I come from a place where there are polar bears not too far away. If this so-called “activist” really gave a darn about polar bears he’d be putting all his energy into slowing down global warming. He wouldn’t be wasting time over this particular bear, who obviously should go to a good zoo somewhere. Here in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, we’ve got a couple of polar bears in the zoo who are very long-lived, happy and healthy. We have a 30-year old bear who’s in tremendous, happy condition.

This “activist” is a media showboat, doing more harm than good to the world’s polar bears. The harm comes from reasonable people who actually do know and care about these issues getting smeared with his crackpot version of reality.

  8. Gig says:

If he really want the little fellow dead I hope that they make him wear a PETA t-shirt as he picks up that rock in the picture and bashes it in the head with it. Make sure the media is there.

  9. gquaglia says:

Animal rights activist are as crazy and dangerous as any terrorist. They should be treated the same.

  10. Jennifer says:

It would be nice if anyone actually read activist’s statement, where they explain how they are being intentionally misquoted. You folks are far too easy.

  11. julieb says:

awww, he’s so cute! I want to pet him.

I think on hot days they should freeze treats in blocks of ice and let him play with them. People could come and watch and take pictures. It would be fun.

Oh yea, and not kill him.

  12. Pete says:

#5 Saw part of a documentary that is coming out later month. We during a photo-op, this group calling for the ban of Canadian hunting seals (not pups.. but a few weeks longer) They let one agonize to death instead of putting out of it misery. And when it tried to escape into the water to die. One of the activist went and dragged it back out so it could be seen in the background. It died after 45 long minutes.

  13. mandarin says:

The moment someone says feeding by hand is a gross violation pretty much labels this person as someone who needs to be given a reality check…. I assume he’s related to Jack Thompson.

  14. Mike says:

Good thing we got over this “not species-appropriate” business years ago for things like dogs and cats. Can’t deny these people the pleasure from their own captives… I mean, pets.

  15. Ian says:

Let it get raised by humans, and in 5-10 years it will viciously maul some caretaker and it will get killed anyway.

Always takes the injury/death of a human to sway these decisions in the end.

  16. OhForTheLoveOf says:

#6 – and since Hill is a reactionary and a shill, you’d be making a mistake.

    #9 – Bullshit.

WTF is up with this headline? Animal Rights ActivistS

Please enlighten us. I thought the statement by the neonazi “The zoo must kill the bear,” was pretty clear.

  18. BubbaRay says:

Oh, Good Grief! You’ll just have to fight it out amongst yourselves. Animal activists, get a life. I’ve got pets, and I’m glad mine didn’t succumb to the recent pet food debacle. Anti-animal rights activists, get a life. I suggest all get in a big stadium and throw dead animals at each other and call each other names.

Now, back to the Holy Wars in the Middle East, because ‘my god is better than your god.’ For goodness sakes, why don’t we fight over some really choice desert for a few thousand years first….

Just my 2 new ‘Gold Dollars’ worth.

“It would be nice if anyone actually read activist’s statement, where they explain how they are being intentionally misquoted.”

Well, you didn’t post any link with your comment there, so I’ll go by Herr Albrecht’s own statement, quoted verbatim: “The zoo must kill the bear.” That is not a misquote.

Every time someone makes an unacceptable statement like that – on the record – as soon as the outrage and backlash begin, they start backpedalling; “I was misquoted,” “Well, that’s what I said but that’s not what I meant,” and similar lame attempts to rehabilitate themselves.

Aber das macht nicht aus. Herr Albrecht’s sentiment strongly suggests that he is a cold-blooded, arrogant sociopath, with delusions of grandeur indicated. He considers himself sufficiently superior to assume the role of an arbiter of life and death. With a bit more courage, his attitude is representative of a particular sort of serial murderer – far from unknown in Germany – who eradicates (“for their own good”) those he has, God-like, determined to suffer inadequate quality-of-life.

Little Knut is a considerably more valuable asset to the biosphere than Herr Albrecht…

  20. Jägermeister says:

    #1 – I say kill the activists.

Not often I agree with you, but I agree… if they’re so hell-bent on having something killed… why not themselves…

  21. Ron Larson says:

In their minds, two wrongs make a right.

On the opposite side of the coin, animal lovers gets all bent out of shape when they try to cull animals. Two examples. First, off the coast of my hometown Santa Barbara are the Channel Islands. Eons ago boars were introduced to Santa Cruz Island (the largest). They are still there.

Every time the parks department tried to remove them (hunt them) to remove them from the island, all the animal lovers in my town get all bent out of shape. Despite the fact that the boars are non-native and very destructive.

Here in Australia, where I live now, kangaroos are as common as deer. And like deer, they need to have the herd thinned by culling. So when they have roo shoots, all the animal lovers get all bent out of shape. Despite the fact that the roos in some area are starving and fighting over thin resources.

    Ya can’t win.

  22. aaabbb says:

Um, the heading should really be: ONE SO-CALLED ANIMAL RIGHTS ACTIVIST

  23. James Hill says:

#17 – In case you’re confused, when I go in all these weak political threads on here and use the word “hack”, I’m refering to people like you who can’t back up their bullshit.

You and those like you are the reason this place isn’t half as good as it could be.

What am I a shill for? How am I a reactionary? I consistently put forward a point of view that simply states that most political discussions are meaningless (like this one), as one side has an absolute that cannot be refuted. For better or worse, the last things I am are a shill or a reactionary.

  24. Misanthropic Scott says:

I seem to be a bit late to this one, but here goes anyway.

Let me start by saying that I love wildlife and have traveled to a lot of remote places to see it, including Churchill for the polar bears.

These are probably the same PETA morons that free lobsters in the parking lots of restaurants and free lab animals with no survival skills and a high probability of communicable diseases. They would rather see an animal die a horribly gruesome death while free than suffer in captivity, even in cases like this where there would be loving humans taking excellent care of the animal. Even as a huge animal lover, I’d go with this PETA before the other.

    #2 – curmudgen,

Wow!! Going for the fastest Godwin’s Law invocation in history?

    #5 – Mac Guy

I think you’re missing something. The seal-clubbing is in full swing. Canada increased the take for the last several years. They’re clubbing around a hundred thousand harp seal pups a year, mostly for a growing Asian market.

    #9 – gquaglia

Not all of us are insane like PETA. Some of us even eat meat. There’s no need for cruelty. And we shouldn’t eat predators or anything older than our grandmothers. But, eating prey animals is OK, as long as they’re killed humanely. Killing a precious baby polar bear as they become increasingly endangered due to climate change is just plain stupid.

    #22 – Ron Larson,

I’m an environmentalist and animal activist. I gave money every year to a special fund of the Charles Darwin Research Station in the Galapagos Islands to eradicate (read kill) goats and pigs on the islands that were destroying habitat needed by the endangered tortoises. Please don’t lump us all together. Some of us take our views very seriously and weigh such necessities carefully and make educated decisions.

    #23 – aaabbb,

Thank you!! Yes. Just one. One activist does not get to speak for all of us, especially a brain dead extremist!!

And this ladies and gentlemen, is why the majority of the animal rights activists are urban women.

    #25

I thought they raised the take because Jennifere Lopez was out shopping 😉

I would rather think of it as Occam’s razor.

  27. ChrisMac says:

    last time i checked..

“its” gotta be 18 to vote

  28. r jones says:

This story is a hoax. Do a google search for Frank Albrecht- there is only one story referencing him and it’s this one with no relation to any animal rights organization. It really ruffled the feathers of the long suffering and bloated meat eaters though didn’t it…

  29. clubby says:

#19 Hit it. Once this cute wild animal becomes a big wild animal it will look for food in people places and if people get in the way, he’ll kill them. This happens all the time in our state parks. For the record, I do love the irony.

  30. Lauren the Ghoti says:

    #29 – r jones

Y’know, before you parade your smug, self-rightrous delusions of superiority before the world, maybe you could get some fucking reading skillz, y’think?

The name is F-R-A-N-Z. Try another clue: Der Bildis a German paper. That tell you anything, Brainiac?

If you can tear yourself away from admiring yourself in the mirror, please resume demonstrating how you vegetarian lackwits are so much better than we ‘meat eaters’ – as if that has the first thing to do with this story…

    Dipshit.
