TheStar.com – World – Chinese food official sentenced to death — I have a slightly different take on this. We know the Chinese hand out death sentences to bureaucrats left and right. But we have to ask ourselves why these harsh punishments. You must conclude that extreme measures are necessary because there is a overwhelming tendency towards corruption that permeates all of China to such an extreme that they have to kill these people. It makes you wonder.

Facing mounting worldwide concern over the safety of its food and drug exports, China sentenced its former top food and drug administrator to death yesterday.

Zheng Xiaoyu, a one-time shining light in the field of pharmaceuticals who became head of the State Drug Administration in 1998, was found guilty of taking $820,000 U.S. in bribes to let companies circumvent safety tests and take their drugs directly to market. At least 10 people died as a result of Zhengs actions, but many more deaths are suspected.

Yesterdays sentencing is seen as a stiff measure aimed at showing the world that China is serious about reining in renegades who would flout government safety standards.

    33. bobbo: Anyway, fun to note how the most ignorant impoverished dumb ass in the world can get elected to congress and four years later he is a millionaire. They are all millionaires by the time they leave if they aren’t by the time they get there. aka Hilliaries investment expertise turning ($5000) into hundreds of thousands. aka love to see what Edwards “learned” in his stint at the hedge fund?

Yes, kind of makes Romneys offer to donate his Presedential salary seem a little hollow, eh?

35—“Follow the money” if you want to know who/what a man really is. This is a call for “total transparency.” Where are the tax record analyses of all our vaunted candidates?

As stated, we don’t even investigate, much less prosecute, much less find guilty, our leadership. China is way ahead of us.

    China is a Communist country?

Gosh, I thought that it was a Authortarian Capitalist country. I learn something new everyday.

What with all of the manufacturing going on in china FOR the usa, it doesnt suprise me in the least that theres a scapegoat involved. The chineese realize that without american investment (aka walmart), their economy could be upset – and with the olypics comming up in beijing, they’ll want to put on a “good face”.

#31 said: “Who compared commies to jews?”

    You did.

No, you did. Obviously your hatred had blinded you to the fact that if I, or Danny Glover, has business dealings with anyone does not make me the same as them. A point you obviously don’t understand.

Geeze, you suggest I’m a commie, do your current dealings with me on this blog also make you a commie? Would your living in a country you claim is communist be enough to make you a commie too? Jesus H. Christ on a pogo stick, I sure hope you don’t suggest my answering your inane posts makes me a fascist too.

BTW, the word “Jews” is still spelled with a capitol “J”.

As far as Danny Glover, great actor. I have no idea and couldn’t care what his politics are.

Anybody know if this particular scapegoat had anything to do with the company that was using coal byproducts to increase the protein measurement in wheat gluten?

Also, anybody know why the U.S., supposedly the “wheat basket of the world,” and Canada, another wheat producer, find it economical to import gluten, a wheat byproduct?

  7. Mr. Fusion says:

#41, excellent question. I thought both the US and Canada supplied most of the world’s wheat exports. To ship this to China, process it, and then ship it back does not make economic sense.

#43, Pedro, any comments about that TV station that was shut down and overtaken? Not much news about it here in TX or on the ‘net that I can find.
