But we have to ask ourselves why these harsh punishments. You must conclude that extreme measures are necessary because there is a overwhelming tendency towards corruption that permeates all of China to such an extreme that they have to kill these people. It makes you wonder.
Facing mounting worldwide concern over the safety of its food and drug exports, China sentenced its former top food and drug administrator to death yesterday.
Zheng Xiaoyu, a one-time shining light in the field of pharmaceuticals who became head of the State Drug Administration in 1998, was found guilty of taking $820,000 U.S. in bribes to let companies circumvent safety tests and take their drugs directly to market. At least 10 people died as a result of Zhengs actions, but many more deaths are suspected.
Yesterdays sentencing is seen as a stiff measure aimed at showing the world that China is serious about reining in renegades who would flout government safety standards.

What with all of the manufacturing going on in china FOR the usa, it doesnt suprise me in the least that theres a scapegoat involved. The chineese realize that without american investment (aka walmart), their economy could be upset – and with the olypics comming up in beijing, they’ll want to put on a “good face”.

Anybody know if this particular scapegoat had anything to do with the company that was using coal byproducts to increase the protein measurement in wheat gluten?
Also, anybody know why the U.S., supposedly the “wheat basket of the world,” and Canada, another wheat producer, find it economical to import gluten, a wheat byproduct?
#41, excellent question. I thought both the US and Canada supplied most of the world’s wheat exports. To ship this to China, process it, and then ship it back does not make economic sense.
