The US Attorney General Michael Mukasey has claimed that counterfeiting and piracy is funding terrorism.

Yep, all those students downloading Coldplay tracks are actually responsible for financing the bad guys who are shooting at our boys in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Mukasey was speaking to Silicon Valley executives at the Tech Museum of Innovation, in defence of the US’ bizarre software patent system and copyrights.

He claimed that terror groups are taking their cues from organised crime and increasingly funding their operations from intellectual property theft, he said.

Once again, the United States leads the world in being terrorized proves its leadership in the War On Terror.

you pretty much can’t scratch your backside without being with the “terrists”

we’ve always been at war with eastasia

  2. Li says:

If we argue that fear-mongering and demagoguery is funding terror, can we get him to shut up?

  3. moss says:

Our politicians are an embarrassment to the whole nation. One more problem with any kind of “patriotism” is you’re saying you’re proud to live in a country run by nutballs.

  4. Elizabeth says:

The problem with this country is that the average IQ is not quite high, and there seem to be many people willing to vote for the dumbest bits of primordial sludge so they can feel like they share something in common with their leaders. I say get Geeks into office. I’d rather feel dumber than the President every day, as long as I wasn’t living in a country that will eventually have to be eradicated to save the rest of the world from stupidity.

Now excuse me, I have to go make some breakfast. I hope the Feds don’t realize that my eggs are also funding terrorists.

  5. Molloy says:

Anything that stops people listening to Coldplay is a good thing. I spent 3 months working in retail last summer and had to listen to X&Y on infinite repeat. If I ever meet Chris Martin in the street he’s getting punched in the nose. Why oh why do people like such dull, insipid music?

  6. Improbus says:

This is in the same vein as “Refer Madness”, i.e., transparent propaganda. It is pretty sad really. I guess the real sad part is that some people believe it.

  7. the answer says:

But if you steal something for free, where does this “funding” come from?

  8. Satan says:

    Hahahahahahaha….

The world’s greatest ‘terrist’ is sitting in the White House.

If that idiot wants to stop ‘terrism’, he needs to find a way to get his boss out of the White House.

  9. JimD says:

Interesting that Mukasey was speaking at the Tech Museum of Innovation !!! That’s the only place you can see American Tech these days – Corporations have closed their labs down, laid off the scientists and engineers, and outsourced their design work to third world sweatshops !!!

  10. John Paradox says:

Sony BMG is a terrorist organization!

(No, really, though we already knew that)

  11. OhForTheLoveOf says:

    Well… That does it…

As of now, I am changing my previous position and I am now officially with the terrorists.

That’s right. I can no longer play the game where I jump from hoop to hoop trying not to be anti-American or pro-terror or whatever the the Department of Homeland Insecurity is trying to sell this week…

Oppose the war? You are for terror.
Legalize Marijuana? You are for terror.
Tired of airline hassles? You are for terror.
Criticize Bush? You are for terror.
Oppose Flag Burning Amendment? You are for terror.
Don’t Taze me bro? You are for terror.
Like the Constitution? You are for terror.
Listen to MP3s? You are for terror.

From now on, I am with “The Terrorists.” It’s just gonna be so much easier to be consistent this way. I don’t really want to blow anything up, but I do want to know where I stand… and that’s easier on the other side.

Now… Can someone please tell me who “The Terrorists” are so I can go join them?

  12. Improbus says:

Now… Can someone please tell me who “The Terrorists” are so I can go join them?

Do you really want to run for public office?

  13. amodedoma says:

I can’t believe they can say this stuff with a straight face, either these guys are really that ignorant, or they’re professional liars.

  14. Norman Speight says:

    Are they SERIOUS?
Terrorists ripping off income from the Wise Guys?
I suggest that Osama et al carefully examine the underneath their cars before driving off. Also, be careful whose barber chair you sit in – I forgot, terrists don’t go to the barber do they.
The penalty for this could be worse than a free holiday at the governments expense in Guantanamo.

  15. JimD says:

Well, the Repukes and RepubliKKKan used to FEAR-MONGER about “A Red under every Bed” !!! Now it’s a “Terrorist” !!! They can’t STEAL ANY MONEY FROM THE TAXPAYERS WITHOUT SOME KIND OF “WAR” TO “FIGHT” (Not that they would enlist, of course!) And lets not forget the “War on Drugs” now going on for more than FIFTY YEARS, with no “Victory” in sight !!! “War”, it’s all about the PROFITS !!!

Toto: “We’re in a movie you dumb ass, it never worked to begin with, it’s made up Hollywood fantasy bullshit.”

Michael Mukasey: “Toto! You’re either with us or you’re with the terrorist.”

    Toto: “Don’t taz me bro.”

  17. Usagi says:

Apparently, he is owned by the RIAA. you only think he works for the taxpayers.

  18. Bigby Wolf says:

    Let’s see…

Connecting file sharing with organized crime – didn’t work, no-one believed it.

Connecting file sharing with child pornography – didn’t work, no-one believed it.

Connecting file sharing with terrorism – won’t work, no-one will believe it.

What’s next on the list – alien abductions?

BTW OFTLO, I’m with you. I’ll COPY your list of arguments (like the evil terrorist-supporting pirate that I am) and print them on a T-shirt.

  19. Ummmm... says:

I searched for this story on Reuters and came up empty. Tried Yahoo news search and also came up empty.

    Early April Fool’s joke?

  20. Did anyone read the speeach? He didn’t equate file sharing with terrorist activity. He was speaking about large counterfeiting organizations, etc… not individual file-sharers.

And here I thought people were reasonable.

  21. jcunwired says:

Hehe, with elections coming up, I wonder if we will have BitTorrent Code Red alerts?

More seriously, the fearmongers will probably pick up their rhetoric on terrorism, its election season.

  22. OhForTheLoveOf says:

#21 – Did anyone read the speeach?

    Why would we?

    I get off on self-righteous indignation…

  26. zorkor says:

I better stop downloading music videos and car test drive videos as I might be labbelled a terrorist by a lazy butt country like USA. I wonder if driving a manual car is a terrorism too? Hmmm…

  27. JimD says:
