The Absolut vodka company has apologized for an ad campaign depicting the southwestern U.S. as part of Mexico amid angry calls for a boycott by U.S. consumers.

The campaign, which promotes ideal scenarios under the slogan “In an Absolut World,” showed a 1830s-era map when Mexico included California, Texas and other southwestern states…

Absolut said the ad was designed for a Mexican audience and intended to recall “a time which the population of Mexico might feel was more ideal.”

Uh, OK…

  1. Phillep says:

Eric, didn’t I say those off the rez that did not fall into the “poor me” trap or drugs or booze trap were better off? Does that say that no Indians have avoided those traps?

If you think you are not better off now than you would be otherwise, spend a year in the woods in buckskin, and without Deet. Been there, done that, HELL NO I’M NOT DOING IT AGAIN. (Damned black flies.)

I believe I also mentioned some of my ancestors jumping the rez?

Some modernize and thrive, some fall into poverty and misery. I admit to a bit of bias in feeling greater respect for a well educated, healthy, and prosperous Indian than I do for a similar whitey, because I’ve seen too many Indians that found failure easier. Some of them my cousins.

Yes, Indians got screwed over. So did the Irish, Catholics, Jews, Dutch, and even the English commoners that were sold into indentured servitude when they got to the US. (The first slaves owned by Englishmen when they got to the North Am continent were other Englishmen.)

Expand your education into history. So far as I know, the only history that includes the warts is “dead white man” history, but you have to search to get past the PC crowd.

Thanks on the Black Hawk. It’s just one of those puzzles you get from the elders that makes no sense because it’s incomplete.

  2. bobbo says:

Just Breaking–Lou Dobbs reports survey in Mexico saying 58% percent responding think they have a right to immigrate to the Pre-War Borders shown in that Absolut Ad.

Seems losing a war and being paid for the land doesn’t have the sense of finality that it used to have.

  3. Ron Larson says:

If the ad was for Mexico, then why is the tag line printed in ENGLISH in large white letters across the middle?

If they had shown an ad with the US controlling Mexico, there would have been riots all over Latin America.

I dunno. Perhaps they are trying to say that if us Gringos had taken up drinking vodka in large quantities instead of fulfilling Manifest Destiny, then this would have been the result.

Of course the Mexican government neglecting their northern states, perhaps staying a home in Mexico City getting drunk, is what resulting in the US taking them over. In 1846 John Fremont took California from Mexico in just over a week with only 300 soldiers.

What if this vodka company did an ad showing the old Yugoslavia, or Serbia, before they disintegrated in civil war in the 1990’s. Would that be funny?

  4. Brian says:

    Who cares, honestly?

I mean, christ, who has the time to get worked up over trivial shit like this?

When ads like this elevate your heart rate, I’d assume it’s time to look for a hobby.

  5. James Hill says:

Look on the bright side: It’s now OK to admit that lawns are mowed much better in the western third of the nation.

  6. tallwookie says:

hey i know – lets drink a shit ton of Absolut & get smashed & then kill all the mexicans… well most of em, I need someone to work @ fast food places

  7. BlondBombshell says:

Have any of you morons calling Mexico a shit hole ever even been to Mexico? I doubt any of you have ever had a Mexican mow your lawn either. Do trailers typically have lawns? We have a white kid who dropped out of high school mowing ours. But I’m sure you have been to plenty of fast food resturaunts. Caucasian culture! The mid-west is so classy and enlightened. We Mexicans have so much to learn.

cripes, man, THIS is the hobby..get with it!!!

  9. bilgo bad says:

I,d say the ad worked. look how many people who never heard of absolut now have.
As for oral history, anyone here remember the old game of wispering a story to a person and having them repeat it to the next person???
remember that white kid who dropped out of high school mowing your lawn He is probebly worth more then you

  10. Joshua says:

#8…bobbo….what exactly does Franco have to do with countries settled or colonized by Spain?

  11. bobbo says:

#73–Joshua==1:36 am and you are reviewing posts made 65 entries ago?

A devil for the detail. I forget, but let me go back and see if anything comes to mind.

    – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Well, the discussion was about how anyplace colonized by Spain is a shithole compared to places colonized by anyone else. But its worse than that. It makes sense that Spain itself is a shithole compared to what other countries made of themselves. When England came up with Churchill and Disralie, Spain came up with Franco. Years after Franco when traveling as a tourist, Spain was kinda freaky. Only “police force” that walked around with sub-machine guns on their shoulders. Things have improved–fascism has given way to more democractic institutions both in politics and religion. Let the sun shine.

  12. BdgBill says:

#70 – I have not been to mexico myself.

A client who sent me to Nicaragua, Guatamala, El Salvador, Honduras and Costa Rica did not send me to Mexico because it was “too dangerous”.

A friend of mine was stranded in Mexico city for ten days after 911. He talks about this experience like he has Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Apparantly the city has pollution that you can taste. The people in the hotel warned him not to go outside after dark.

I never once saw anyone doing landscaping in California who was not Mexican.

  13. Mr. Catshit says:

    #70, blondbombshell,

Have any of you morons calling Mexico a shit hole ever even been to Mexico?

Ahh, ya. I’ve been to that shit hole. Geeze, some parts are really bad.

    Do trailers typically have lawns?

Around here, many trailers are permanently parked. And yes, they do have lawns. Many of them can even roll up their lawns and take them with them when they move. Gee, they also take their mailbox so they don’t have to change their address.

The mid-west is so classy and enlightened.

Thank you. I guess you’ve seen that shit hole Mexico too. That place makes the rest of the world look great.

We Mexicans have so much to learn.

And most Americans just wish you would do it in Mexican schools instead of expecting us to pay for your education.

  14. Reactive says:

thats awsome 76 posts about pure shit, but now i clearle realise that u guys “AMERICANS” dont know shit about history and all the things outside ur shity country, and u guys talk about culture cmon, what u have mcdonalls culture, nike culture, cnn culture, hollywood culture, use ur brain internet is not the only source there are also books u can try to read one.

  15. bobbo says:

    #77–Reactive==good one.

  16. West Coast says:

It is amazing to see how some Americans think. Reading threads like this really makes me concerned for our future. No wonder the rest of the world seems to hate us so much. The funny thing is, we can no longer act like we don’t care what they think. If they don’t buy our debt we won’t be able to live our ‘prosperous’ lifestyles.

Regarding the ad, so what? It stirs up feelings of Mexicans who wish they would not have lost the war. Kind of like the confederate flag stirs up feelings of southerners who wish they would not have lost another war.

  17. bobbo says:

#79—Some people think anything you can think of. Not too amazing.

  18. pat says:

#79 – “No wonder the rest of the world seems to hate us so much.”

Does that mean the rest of the world will stop trying to break into the U.S. and flood us with their human waste? One can only hope.

  19. ivan says:

Borrowed interest. Dos Equis Beer has done the same exact ad: http://adsoftheworld.com/media/print/dos_equis_beer_geography

  20. bobbo says:

Not exactly the same ad. Dos Equis goes all the way to, and into Canada==look at Nova Scotia.

We better keep that beer away from the Mexscans, seems they can only hold their vodka.

  21. Eric says:

#55 and #56: I don’t blame anyone today, and do not expect today’s people to pay for the sins of their ancestors. My first response was to the writer that seemed to have a rose colored vision of the past. I point out the horrors so that we don’t repeat them in the future, or can see it happening elsewhere and maybe stop it. Hitler, Darfur, Tibet, it all happens again and again.

  22. foke says:

i think if mexico really wanted that land then they should have fought harder to defend it and they should stop complaining that the us stoled the land mexico let them and im mexican
