Arkansas’ ‘Biggest Loser’ Inmate Files Suit Against County Stating He Is Starving
Broderick Lloyd Laswell, 20, weighed in at a robust 413 lbs. when he was incarcerated eight months ago. He has withered away to a mere 308 since then, and is filing a suit against the county due to his drastic weight loss.
Seems Broderick isn’t too happy with the meals he is being served while incarcerated. Benton County has been serving inmates cold meals for years, something which doesn’t set well with this young man.
He has filed a civil suit against the county claiming that he is being starved. He says that he becomes light-headed and is losing an approximate 1/2 pound per day. He also states that the portion sizes of the meals he is given vary widely from tray to tray and that within one hour of eating his stomach starts to churn and growl and he “feels hungry again.”
[…]”The only reason we lost weight in here is because we are literally are being starved to death.”
Benton County has responded by informing the public that inmates are served an average of 3,000 calories a day, which by all accounts should be sufficient to sustain life and would not result in your average person “starving.”

Unbelievable. 3000 calories per is the maximum recommended by the USDA – http://tinyurl.com/558X8m
Another frivolous lawsuit…

3000 cal/day and he LOST weight?!?
Where do I sign up for that?
Maybe this fat fuck will accidentally sit on the lawyer that is representing him and the judge who allowed this case to go to trial.
The prisoners in this jail must getting plenty of exercise to burn those 3,000 calories they are fed each day.
Forgive me for posting this here, But I just herd Dvorak on the No agenda podcast and I laughed so hard I dropped my beer! When John c. said “What are the sheep doing in the tunnel!” I thought I’d die, I only bring it up ’cause it came after they were making some of the most insightful conclusions I’ve ever heard on a podcast, About 4/10th’s of the way in John had me by the balls, And I’ve always poo-pooed his point of view but man John, you’ve turned me. serious props.
When he’s down to 98 pounds then his complaint might be valid.
But then he won’t be able to intimidate normal weight inmates with his mASS anymore.
This fat pig belongs on a rotisserie to help feed Zimbabwe.
#1, ethanol,
Another frivolous lawsuit? What a fucking short sighted jerk you are. You sure don’t disappoint.
The guy is in on remand. He has not been convicted and therefore is not a criminal. His condition is worthy of the same consideration as if he were diabetic or had Bright’s Disease.
So far he has lost a dramatic amount of weight in a short period of time. That is a no-no. I would like to meet the physician who would recommend that. That is extremely hard on the body and he should be medically monitored at all times. If the kid ends up stroking or having a heart attack, look for the jail to be sued big time and possible federal charges.
Mr. Stupid and Impotent (#9),
Apparently you must be obese as well. I didn’t see in the article that he has Diabetes or Bright’s Disease. Are you his nurse practitioner to have this knowledge?
So obesity isn’t unhealthy? Weight loss is bad for him?
Here read all about it on Wikipedia, your favorite reference site:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Obesity
And if they gave him enough food to keep his weight he will sue when he has a heart attack or some other obesity realted problem. 3000 cal is at the top end of the USDA scale. This will probably save his life.
That is until he is tried and convicted for fatally beating and stabbing a man, before setting his home on fire. Arkansas has the death penalty. Though they will have to up the dosage for fat boy here.
In fairness to chubby-the-jail-bird, if you loose weight too quickly, you can have serious health concerns and people have died of cardiac failure as a direct result. Apparently if you loose weight too quickly you body eats away and muscle more or less at random, and if you are unlucky that muscle will be your heart.
Also in fairness to fat-guy-in-jail, he hasn’t actually been convicted. Back in the old days, before Gitmo, water boarding, child molesters roaming streets, and gangs everywhere, we used to have this saying “innocent until proven guilty” which I reckons means you should get some leeway at least until you are convicted.
But then I used to ride my bicycle without a helmet.
Considering that there are MANY americans that go hungry EVERY DAY in the United States, I say getting 3000 cal per day is not a bad deal.
If he’s so worried about losing all the weight, why doesn’t he have a Dr. produce an order prescribing more food for him? I doubt ANY Doctor would. Most medical professionals would say that this is actually doing him good.
I’d bet his Mommy kept feeding his face to keep him quiet as a child and helped make him this giant obese “alleged” criminal. He should be HAPPY he’s losing weight. When he goes to real prison, he’ll need to be more fit to keep from becoming a “catcher” on the prison baseball team.
According to MSNBC, the “curly haired guy” lost 26 pounds a week on the “Biggest Loser” show (I don’t watch it, so I can’t verify). That’s 3.71 pounds a day. The jailhouse menu doesn’t sound like all that severe a deprivation regimen to me. If I ate 3000 calories a day, I’d probably weigh 400 pounds by Christmas. That’s a fuck of a lot of food!
That’s why they call it punishment.
Unfortunately, the “at hard labor” suffix is no longer added to civilian imprisonment
mike cannali “That’s why they call it punishment.”
Punished? Here in the UK we wait until someone is actually convicted for a crime before we punish them. Funnily enough, I always thought that we learnt that whole idea off of the USA…. I must be wrong.
I wish I could get 3000 calories per day. I do good trying to get 2000.
3000 calories is enough to maintain a fatso who weighs 350 pounds. And this asshole should just STFU… he’s a murderer and should suffer for what he did. I say… Outsource the prison system to China!
Ethanol
The minimum safe dietary energy intake (without medical supervision) is 75 percent of that needed to maintain basal metabolism.
So, 75% of his daily requirement is how much? His normal intake should be in the 5,000 to 6000 calorie / day range. So he should be receiving a minimum of 4,000 calories every day. Less than that is dangerous to his health.
As I pointed out, he is on remand. The State is still responsible for his health. It doesn’t matter what his condition is. No one is arguing that his overweight condition is healthy. I am pointing out that rapid weight loss can be very unhealthy and dangerous.
I just love it when you self righteous assholes decide that the police never make mistakes and anyone charged with a crime is automatically guilty. You piss on the “innocent until proven guilty” part of our justice system until you happen to be charged with something.
Ethanol, why do you hate America?
#20–Gawd==your rendition of facts sound credible. I agree with you. Want to reconsider?
#21–pedro==who says it was ok if he was on some reality show? He could easily cheat or more likely get sick and sue the show? Anyway, that fact is irrelevant. When you are in state custody, they take on the requirement to care for you medically===ESPECIALLY pre conviction.
Forget you are arguing with Gawd, and be nimble with new facts.
That he can eat 3000 cal. of jail food a day is amazing, that stuff, when I am in; sucks. he has my admiration. I gain weight on 2000 cal. a day so I am envious also.
send him to Iraq.
Stick a fork in him already! Jeez..
Of course, nobody seems to have fact-checked the 3000 calorie claim, either. Did they arrive at that figure using a lab, by guessing, by calculating each days menu, or off the top of their heads?
Seriously, why should someone who is:
I-N-N-O-C-E-N-T
have to suffer while they are waiting trial? Once he is proven guilty, totally different story. Its that thing line that differentiates between a free and not-free society. I suppose a country that has 16 different secret service organizations is bound to have a skewed idea of Freedom. Shame.
#21, pedro,
It is very simple. The TV show has medical personal monitoring the contestants. The jail doesn’t. If he was to code (have a heart attack) then help would be several minutes away at a minimum and more likely too late in arriving.
I can’t speak for your corner of the world, but in civilized countries, among civilized people, we care about a person’s health.
I think a lot of the anger comes from the ****** up prison system that doesn’t serve to “reform” anyone. We just send the assholes to these places to get them out of the way, but we have to PAY for this, pay for their health care and their meals, because THEY break laws…
This just comes across as one of these douchebags bitching about “inhumane” treatment, which is most likely better than the living conditions of a majority of “free Americans” (health care!)..
hrm.. well what the fuck did they do to get their in the first place?
