Edah Haredit promotes ‘anti-donor’ card | Israel | Jerusalem Post — This group of ultra-Orthodox anti-social Jews will not pay taxes to Israel, will not vote, will not fight. They actually hate Israel from what I can tell although they live there. There is a decent run-down here.

In the coming days, the Edah Haredit, an umbrella organization for some of the most zealous ultra-Orthodox rabbis, will launch a campaign against organ transplants.

What some religious circles see as a mitzva to save the life of an organ recipient, the Edah Haredit sees as murder. “Our rabbis believe that removing a person’s vital organs before pulmonary failure, even after brain death, is tantamount to manslaughter,” said Shmuel Poppenheim, a spokesman for the Edah.

A membership card called “The Card of Life” will be distributed to Edah Haredit followers, and is to be carried at all times. The card contains a declaration that the holder refuses to donate any organs.

Poppenheim said the card included a stipulation that any questions regarding the determination of the death of the cardholder must be decided by Edah rabbis.

Found by Marika Buchberger who asks whether these same folks will WANT an organ donation if something happens to them?

Edah Haredit Protestors

  1. TVAddict says:

They aren’t the only religion to take this stand. No they will not accept a transplant. Jehovah’s Witnesses are also do not want to provide or be given an organ.

  2. Ah_Yea says:

Weird. If I’m not mistaken, here in the US you have to “opt-in” to become an organ donor.

That’s the weird part. I believe it’s the same in Israel. No one can take your organs unless permission is granted from either yourself (beforehand) or your next of kin.

So why bother with a silly card?

(As a note, I’m an organ donor. I figure that if I’m beyond hope it would be selfish to not donate since I’m not using my organs anymore. They can go ahead and take whatever they can use. Eyes, heart, brain – although I can’t imagine what they would want my brain for).

  3. QB says:

Just a different stripe of fundamentalist whackos.

  4. bobbo says:

This also implies that this sect thinks it is wrong to “sacrifice” yourself for someone else.

What do they think about organ donation when dead death occurs?

I thought orthodox jews believed you had to have your “whole body” intact when you died in order to get to heaven? I guess not.

I used to have an organ card but now affirmatively state my organs are NOT available to others until universal preventative heath care is the law of the land.

  5. edwinrogers says:

What’s the big deal? They have all the attributes of Washington hard line conservatives, exclusivity, inability to earn money, strange hair styles, refusal to join the Army, don’t pay taxes, live off the state.

  6. Paddy-O says:

    I don’t see anything wrong here. It’s somebody’s
choice whether they want to be an organ donor or not.

  7. Miss_X2b says:

    This bothers me:

Rabbi Poppenheim said “Non-Jews are not as concerned with the sanctity of life as are Jews,” Poppenheim said. “Consequently, they are more lenient regarding the removal of organs. We often advise people who need a transplant to go abroad. That way you don’t run into as many problems.”

Since when are non-jews not as concerned with the sanctity of life?

  8. Dallas says:

I can speculate that the answer to the last question is likely YES. These people WOULD want an organ for themselves or loved one if need be.

A change in position from conservatives will happen – but only if it affects them.

Take for example stem cell research. Nancy Reagan is very much in favor because Ron had Alzheimer’s. Note McCain also CHANGED in favor (or as Repubs would say, flip-flopped) of pro-stem cell research in order to get Nancy’s endorsement. See how that works?

Religion is important to these folks but can get trumped if the next level of Maslow’s pyramid kicks in.

  9. JimR says:

Nothing new here. All religions promote self superiority which manifests itself in abrasive and often violent social disorders.

  10. deowll says:

Seriously, they are a threat to their own people and less than worthless to everyone else.

Their kind only exist when and where others are willing to keep them alive.

“exclusivity, inability to earn money, strange hair styles, refusal to join the Army, don’t pay taxes, live off the state”

For a moment there I though you were referring to Hippies, Liberal Far-Lefties, Code Pinks, and those who love them!

  12. jcj7161 says:

It is about giving and helping when you allow your organs to be harvested

  13. Mr. Fusion says:

I give them more credit than I do the Anti-Choice crowd. The Edah Haredit only are forcing this upon themselves, not everyone.

  14. lou says:

    More annoying people.

  15. GregAllen says:

I just can’t respect the various “cultures” who absolutely will not GIVE organs but will take them!

There are a lot of such cultures, BTW. Seems like most, actually.

Worse, yet, the fact that these nations won’t participate for “cultural reasons” creates a shortage so it massively increases the costs.

I think a “opting in” to the donor program should get an individual priority on the list.

  16. Rich says:

I must be naive as a child on this topic. I didn’t know the donors were still breathing when the organs were removed. That seems macabre to me.

  17. Mr. Fusion says:

    #16, Rich,

The preferred donor is brain dead but the body is still functioning. Usually on life support. As soon as the heart ceases pumping, the organs die. There is a very short window from when the organ ceases to receive blood and it becomes unusable. As soon as the organ is removed, it is quickly chilled in order to arrest or slow the organ’s death.

If they waited until the heart stopped beating, many organs would not be suitable for transplant. While these organs are routinely used, they have a much poorer outcome.

Tissue transplants have a much larger window and are routinely removed after death.

  18. Paddy-O says:

#13 “I give them more credit than I do the Anti-Choice crowd. The Edah Haredit only are forcing this upon themselves, not everyone.”

Exactly. I don’t even see why this is a news item. Now, if someone was forcing a person to be an organ donor…
