Supreme Court Knocks Down Virginia Spam Law
The Supreme Court on Monday said it is refusing to consider reinstating the Commonwealth of Virginia’s junk e-mail law.
The court’s inaction upholds an earlier ruling of the Virginia Supreme Court that Virginia’s Computer Crimes Act violates First Amendment rights. The broad law prohibits the anonymous transmission of all unsolicited bulk e-mails, including those containing political, religious, or other speech protected by the U.S. Constitution.
Virginia State Attorney General Bill Mims, according to other reports, is planning to draft a new antispam law in the next General Assembly session to address constitutional concerns.
The spammers win again… for the time being.
PETA Killed 95 Percent of Adoptable Pets in its Care During 2008

The Center for Consumer Freedom
WASHINGTON DC – Today the nonprofit Center for Consumer Freedom (CCF) published documents online showing that People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) killed 95 percent of the adoptable pets in its care during 2008. Despite years of public outrage over its euthanasia program, the animal rights group kills an average of 5.8 pets every day at its Norfolk, VA headquarters.
According to public records from the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, PETA killed 2,124 pets last year and placed only seven in adoptive homes. Since 1998, a total of 21,339 dogs and cats have died at the hands of PETA workers.

Door-to-Door Dentist Fixes More Than Just Teeth!

OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla. — A door-to-door dentist is accused of doing much more than pulling teeth. Deputies say he groped a female patient in Osceola County after he gave her drugs.
It does not appear that Luis Figueroa-Vasquez is even a licensed dentist and cops say he didn’t act like one either. He’s accused of drugging one of his would-be patients and then taking advantage of her sexually.
…
Detectives say Figueroa-Vasquez worked out of a pick-up truck. Inside, they found plenty of dental equipment, including the drugs they say he used to take advantage of his patient. In the back of the truck, they found a makeshift dental chair that’s more like a glorified lawn chair.
Chicago Sun-Times Circles the Drain!

Sun-Times Media Group Inc. became the second major Chicago newspaper publisher to seek bankruptcy protection as plunging advertising revenue makes debt payments more difficult.
The company, the owner of the namesake newspaper, and its principal operating subsidiary, the Sun-Times News Group, will continue to run their newspapers and online sites while they focus on further improving cost structure and stabilizing operations, the publisher said in a statement today.
Chicago Tribune owner Tribune Co. and Philadelphia Newspapers LLC, which runs the Philadelphia Inquirer, are among four other newspaper publishers to file for bankruptcy since December. Chicago is the third-largest U.S. city.

Just Before G20 Summit In London, CCTV Cameras To Be Turned Off? Let the Beatings of Protestors Begin!
![]()
|
Ahead of G20 summit, council told to switch off illegal £15m CCTV network – Guardian.co.uk: The security operation at this week’s G20 summit was thrown into chaos last night when it emerged that the entire network of central London’s wireless CCTV cameras will have to be turned off because of a legal ruling.
The Department for Transport has ruled that Westminster council’s mobile road cameras – a third of the authority’s CCTV network – “do not fully meet the resolution standards required” and must be switched off by midnight tomorrow.
That’s interesting. CCTV cameras going dark at a time when it has become illegal to film or take photos of the police in England. Somehow I find the timing to be quite convenient, especially with the G20 summit taking place in London. Well, with so many cameras around London, I really don’t think it will make much difference. People planning to protest have already been arrested under terrorism laws.
‘Activists’ arrested under terrorism law – Independent.co.uk
olice used anti-terrorism laws to arrest five people they suspect of planning to disrupt Thursday’s G20 summit, it emerged yesterday.
Three men and two women, who were thought to be political activists, were taken into police custody on Friday after police officers discovered imitation weapons, fireworks and political literature during a search of a flat in Plymouth.
That’s anti-capitalism literature that was found. Businesses around London where protests will take place are boarding up their doors and windows.
Latin Usages to be Banned in Parts of the UK. WHY!?!?!?
|
The Death Of Latin – CBS News — I’m now convinced there is something in the water over there.
A couple of thousand years ago we British were invaded by some extremely civilized conquerors – the Romans. They built our roads, our cities – like Londinium, and left us – after several hundred years – with a rich sense of culture and a great deal of their own language. In fact using Latin phrases is still the, er, ’status quo’. There are hundreds of, er, ‘bona fide’ English sayings which owe everything to Julius Caesar and his legions.
But now the use of Latin is to be banned – on the orders of England’s most interfering busybodies, our local town councils. And that’s an irony because the very word council was first coined by the Romans.
I have, er, ‘prima facie’ evidence. Bournemouth, a sleepy place on the English south coast, has just issued orders to stop all staff using any popular Latin. So now they are forced to say ‘impromptu’, when they actually mean ‘ad lib’, and it’s a permanent ban – not just ‘pro tem’. Now, the, er, ‘quid pro quo’ for this draconian new rule is supposed to be that everyone will be able to understand everbody else without any risk of confusion in future.
But lovers of Latin regard the ruling as the linguistic equivalent of ethnic cleansing. It is they say, stark staring bonkers, etcetera, etcetera — except they mustn’t ever say ‘etcetera’ because that particular phrase actually started life in ancient Rome.

EU Wants “Communication Box” in New Cars to Track Drivers

The government is backing a project to install a “communication box” in new cars to track the whereabouts of drivers anywhere in Europe, the Guardian can reveal.
Under the proposals, vehicles will emit a constant “heartbeat” revealing their location, speed and direction of travel. The EU officials behind the plan believe it will significantly reduce road accidents, congestion and carbon emissions. A consortium of manufacturers has indicated that the router device could be installed in all new cars as early as 2013.
However, privacy campaigners warned last night that a European-wide car tracking system would create a system of almost total road surveillance.
