The “March 2013 Watchlisting Guidance,” a 166-page document issued last year by the National Counterterrorism Center, spells out the government’s secret rules for putting individuals on its main terrorist database, as well as the no fly list and the selectee list, which triggers enhanced screening at airports and border crossings. The new guidelines allow individuals to be designated as representatives of terror organizations without any evidence they are actually connected to such organizations, and it gives a single White House official the unilateral authority to place entire “categories” of people the government is tracking onto the no fly and selectee lists. It broadens the authority of government officials to “nominate” people to the watchlists based on what is vaguely described as “fragmentary information.” It also allows for dead people to be watchlisted.
[…]
Emblazoned with the crests of 19 agencies, it offers the most complete and revealing look into the secret history of the government’s terror list policies to date. It reveals a confounding and convoluted system filled with exceptions to its own rules, and it relies on the elastic concept of “reasonable suspicion” as a standard for determining whether someone is a possible threat.

This is a tough one for RWNJs… ignore the liberal Glenn Greenwald, or accept his information and use it to bash Obama?

    Decisions, decisions…

I feel bad for any president, D or R, in this situation. They get criticized for turning the country into a police state, but if any terrorism occurs, they’ll be crucified for not doing enough to catch the perps. A no-win situation. 🙁

    • BubbaMustafa says:

      How about stop creating terrorists?

Canada has as many freedoms as we do. How come the ‘terrorists’ don’t attack them?

Could it be that Canada doesn’t bomb their country, screw up their economy, rape their resources?

      • Tim says:

American terrorists are not created. They are born here. Every American citizen is to be considered a terrorist; a threat to an occupying, criminal group of imposters.

Those wayward youth in Mary Poppins and Queen Elizibeth garb over there chopping heads off are not terrorists — They are Jihadists; That is why Obama should not drone them as they march through town singlefile waving their well-aired scrota like incense smudgers toward their sick vision of Allah.

      • bobbo, we think with words, and flower with Ideas says:

        Bubba–(((deleted))))

………at first I disagreed with you then started to write why……. but: “fair enough.” Making being attacked by terrorists just one of the consequential cost elements of international trade.

Another reason to go green?……. ha, ha.

        • Tim says:

start, when? 1991? Let’s bomb the shit out of their infrastructure and then spend the next 12 years forbidding the import of things such as activated charcoal to clean the kiddies’ toothbrush water with. 750,000 dead??

FF ~2003. Lets spend the next 10 years doing the same thing again only this time take everyones’ firearms and dump all our used military shit in the new bad guys’ tennis court.

          ——————-

This gets scary. A southern baptist deacon {who is in the know because he’d be making accurate death for the governent when not busy fishing or abstaining from drinking the fruit of the vine} told me 18 years ago that the final conflict that brings back Jesus would be the heathen ‘Islam’ overtaking the world.

I’d have been shaking in my little end times prophecy thongs if it wasn’t that i’d read the same shit where Leon Stauss wrote it down a couple years before…

The Great Deception — a bunch of bankers and neocons pulled a couple pages out of Scripture and thought it a good script??

          • bobbo, we think with words, and flower with Ideas says:

Well Timmmy===you are conflating a number of issues…..and then starting to rotate.

Ha, ha. Always fun to see that…… the rotation that is.

End times eh? No wonder AGW is of no interest.

……but lets not Pas-de-deux. I’ll sit this one out…..for now.

          • bobbo, the pragmatic existential Anti-theist and Junior Culture critic says:

I guess it means whatever one is thinking of, but I was thinking “rotate off your nut” as is so often the case when religion is brought into a discussion.

Much like your link, it can be fun….until feelings get hurt.

            Can you name that tune?

          • Ken Jennings says:

            “”Can you name that tune?

            What is workplace sensitivity training?

          • bobbo, the pragmatic existential Anti-theist and Junior Culture critic says:

Ken==quite trying to sell your shit programs.

Although, I have to say some of the group gropes, I mean exercises, are fun. Seeming management types out side of structured relationships. Ha, ha. What dolts, each one an overbrained primate looking for bananas.

Of course, I jest. We all love and trust one another because we are “TEAM USA!!!!!”

          • Ken Jennings says:

^^ that answer was never in the form of a question, Alex.

  2. Tim says:

“”It can become burdensome—or impossible—to travel. And routine encounters with law enforcement can turn into ordeals.

    Really?? I hadn’t noticed.

    —————

Dang. This would have been the perfect place for a little review of Terrorist Extremism Lexicon . Only, I never jotted down everything together and can’t now find the most relevant links.

There was an exclusive leak to Infowars {not the 2009 MIAC} which listed some pretty mundane things as possible terrorism. One attribute was “opposes U.N. takeover”… I was going to contact Watson to say that perhaps something funny was up with the document presented. While there was official DHS letterhead, the text itself looked to be somebody’s subjective appraisal of the traits. Well, WH came out immediately and said that the leaked document was a rough draft and not the final…

“”“Domestic Extremism Lexicon” is dated March 26—shortly before the flap over the right-wing extremism memo broke out. According to a spokesperson for DHS, the memo was recalled “within minutes” of being issued, though the spokesperson declined to offer any details on the reasons for its withdrawal.

    http://thedailybeast.com/articles/2009/04/30/who-you-calling-an-extremist.html

But, all links to that document seem broken. not ‘unavailable’ but the server is gone. As with the .pdf link here: http://washingtontimes.com/news/2009/apr/14/federal-agency-warns-of-radicals-on-right/

Now, the may document is on Cryptome but there was some funny timing, preempting, and soothsaying from the WH over the scuffaw…

I believe the original egregious one is how they are to interpret it. Dang. I had language to back that hypothesis up… maybe it will come back where I read it…

  3. bobbo, we think with words, and flower with Ideas says:

How the list is made, how you get on it, can and should be as loose as anyone thinks is appropriate. The “real” harm is not having an effective/legitimate way to get OFF the list.

………..musing on it some……none of us care until we find ourselves on such lists (and can’t get off)….so the issue becomes one of numbers. How many Good and True Americans can be treated in error by the Gubment before there is push back? It varies by outrage.

…………………..musing further….this issue is one that infringes directly on our freedoms. Freedom to Travel is very important. Yet this thread will not bend to that issue but rather stay on issues of gubment incompetency vs terror threat. A nice trick and as always demonstrating that guns don’t protect us from the gubment.

………………………………….musing even further ……..would be dithering.

  4. Raintrees says:

And they cannot even spell check the front/title page? And we trust these agencies? Hmmm….

  5. NewFormatSux says:

They make it seem like it’s so horrible for a dead person to be put on a watchlist. Seems to me a good place to start. I’m really OK with not allowing someone to board a flight because they are listed as dead.

I can imagine the headlines Uncle Dave would put up if a person does something, and was not stopped because he was carrying the ID of a dead man.

    • bobbo, the pragmatic existential Anti-theist and Junior Culture critic says:

Yeah….. but…..but…. we all have names of dead people.

      Even those Swedish “sons of…..”

Where’s Norman when we need him?

  6. IH8U says:

I hate to say it, but I AGREE with the terrorists. The U.S. government and many of the people who allow it are FUCKED UP! Though, I’m sure I disagree with any of their violent solutions.

There are no less than 4 different national cops to watch over things NOT counting the regular military. FBI, CIA, NSA, DHS, etc. and STILL no one can seem to get it right.

Just LOOK at what has happened since 9-11 where a whole new breed of stampeding cops will TERRORIZE THEIR VERY OWN PEOPLE should anyone “say something.” Who needs to die flying into sky scrapers when you can cause nearly the same level of fear from one guy and a pair of explosive underwear?! (And not just the smell either.) You don’t even need to do any damage. Just let them THINK you will. That sounds like a text book definition of what terrorism IS, if you ask me.

It’s also hard to ignore how the U.S. leaders will tear up their very own CONSTITUTION when any prospect of an enemy might upset their voters (cattle’s) daily dose of Hollywood. It happened in WWII with people of Japanese descent. So why not make a slightly more evolved list of potential Muslim combatants where someone like Sven Liebowitz might even be a member?! Bring into focus 4th and 2nd Amendment arguments and things do seem to be under assault. Though the fact that the Second Amendment still exists does seem to be America’s only saving grace right now.

“No fly lists”? Secret FISA courts? Really?! Are you sure this isn’t just more tactics to keep control over certain “undesirables” that another Adolf Hitler might some day use for extermination purposes?! And when you throw in the fact that the U.S. government has over reacted by creating a whole new bureau that’s almost right out of NAZI GERMANY (just think about that title for a second: “Homeland Security”), anyone not getting shot at or bombed in one of these warring third world countries has GOT to be laughing his fucking head off (since it’s so much harder to cry).

And if you ARE a terrorist, it’s really hard to ignore the fact that you might even be winning! Just consider what’s happening in your own back yard (just in case the decline of America isn’t well known). The U.S. has now abandoned Iraq after allowing a lot of their very own people to die there. Next up, Afghanistan! And with no real response in places like Libya and countless other locations it would indeed seem like victory is close at hand. (Though, we do know better — it’s LONG from being over. That is, unless someone starts using nukes!)

With partisan bickering legislators and VOTERS who are more concerned about keeping those paychecks rolling in, and a leaderless leader trying to lead a group of traitorous bankers and other big business mafia-like pricks, who the fuck is WINNING this so called war? HUH?!

… And don’t anyone look to the south or anything either. You might not like seeing THAT war probably because some of it is happening right on the U.S.’s own soil! But then, it’s not like places like New Orleans, Detroit or even St. Louis don’t exist — cities that even the media could care less about: https://youtube.com/watch?v=b5_ZrN30dDg&feature=youtu.be

And it’s not like the war on drugs isn’t being lost in Colorado or Washington either. Those states have now totally legalized the very substance that so many DEA people have died trying to prevent! (Just some food for thought since I do seem to have the munchies right now.)

    • Uncle Dave says:

Homeland Security, FBI, Boy Scouts, etc. should be knocking on your door shortly. Make sure to let them know how you feel as the cloth is put over your head for waterboarding. I’m sure they will be quite interested in what you have to say.

    • The Catcher in the Rye says:

      read me

    • Tim says:

“”now totally legalized the very substance that so many DEA people have died trying to prevent!

That is because those people are duped/evil fools. What’s atrocious is all the millions and millions of lives ruined by these very same fucking tools. Lock them up and let them rot as they are the real criminals. Always have been.

but, hey; they got kids to feed — shallow, sickly, retarded ones of privelage.

  7. You’ve made some good points there. I looked on the internet to find out more about the issue and found most individuals will go along with your views on this web site.

  8. What i do not realize is in reality how you are now not really a lot more neatly-appreciated than you may be now. You’re very intelligent. You know thus considerably when it comes to this topic, produced me in my view imagine it from a lot of varied angles. Its like men and women don’t seem to be involved except it’s something to do with Girl gaga! Your individual stuffs nice. Always handle it up!

  9. deowll says:

I think the courts have ruled that people need to be told they are on the no fly list and given a chance to appeal that decision. Good.
