For the last 8 years Republicans did everything they could to make sure Obama failed, even when they agreed with what he wanted. Now the Republicans control the government and they are in charge of making America great rather than making America miserable. And in the last 8 year we went from total economic collapse to doing reasonably well.

Now that Trump is tinkering with Obamacare it is now Trumpcare. If they screw it up it’s on them. And if the Dems won’t help them, that’s on them too. There is an opportunity for Trump to really improve Trumpcare if they remove the law that prohibits the government from negotiating lower drug prices with the big drug companies. But I doubt Trump is man enough to go after Big Pharma the way he goes after women and poor Mexicans. In my mind that will be the real test to see if he’s serious or just some big blowhard clown. But now if Republicans break it, Republicans own it.

  1. Hmeyers says:

ObamaCare is paying big premiums for insurance with high deductibles. It’s almost useless for healthy people.

It’s a huge wealth transfer from younger people to older people.

And rewards the super-fatties with diabetes that ate themselves into severe obesity.

There are some good things about Obamacare, but the good things are mostly statistical outliers compared to high costs.

Since Obamacare, Medicare premiums have gone up dramatically, I’ve been told.

Insurance isn’t supposed to punative. If they implemented an Obamacare style system for car insurance or home insurance, it would also be disaster.

    • riddlyru says:

This is why for profit health insurance won’t work. The only way this model has a shot, is if insurers regain the ability to exclude people based on their risk and kick people out if they get expensive. Just like your auto insurer can do if you have too many accidents, or your home insurer if you make too many claims.

Universal coverage managed without incentive for profit is probably the most fair solution.

      • Likes2LOL says:

For-profit health insurance is inherently immoral. So was being a plantation owner and whipping the slaves, but they lasted a long time and claimed to be good Christians as well.

Similarly, community ownership of NFL teams (a la the Green Bay Packers) is the way to go, too, but the other NFL owners voted to not allow any other capitalist owner or investment group to deed their team to a community non-profit.

Greed has no ethical bounds. Univeral coverage, like universal education, is the best solution.

  2. NewFormatSux says:

Problem is Republicans can only repeal parts of ObamaCare. If they repealed it all then they would legitimately own it. Instead, they will be repealing what they can, and Democrats might block repealing the rest, making things not so good. The expensive health plans would stay, and perhaps get more expensive, you just wouldn’t be required to buy them. Buying something like you could before would require repeal.

    • bobbo, we think with words and flower with ideas says:

Excellent point. Trump has already broken/revoke O-care by removing the key and necessary foundation.

Its why “insurance” is an unworkable premise on which to build ANY healthcare system. USA, as with everything we do, is NOT a healthcare system but rather a FOR PROFIT DRIVEN system of skimming and milking the American Public of its wealth by the AlreadyTooRich.

      Just look.

      ………………………………….. silly hoomans.

  3. Hmeyers says:

Car insurance: Drive great? Llow rates!
Home insurance: Don’t live in a flood zone, reasonably priced!

Obamacare: Take care of yourself? We’re looking at you to pay for heroine addicts, meth users, the 400 lbs. lady who uses a scooter cart to buy groceries, the Marlboro man who smokes 3 packs a day.

Obamacare is a wealth transfer scam.

It is NOT insurance, because there is no reward for those that take care of themselves.

    It’s just a scam.

    • ± says:

In my company of more than 25 and less than 50 employees with a demographic that goes from young to near retirement, the aggregate cost of insurance (the check I write to the insurance company) has slightly more than doubled from 8 years ago. And the deductible has increased 1000s of dollars and the benefits are less. This is a fact of Ovomitcare. This debacle stands on the backs of the people who make this country run.

    • ± says:

      Could you repeat that?

    1. ObamaCare is paying big premiums for insurance with high deductibles. It’s almost useless for healthy people. /// Yes…. that is WHAT INSURANCE IS. Try to pay attention to other than the givens.

    2. It’s a huge wealth transfer from younger people to older people. /// Again: thats what insurance IS. That is how it works: risk spreading, allocation, selEction, allocation, PROFIT.

    3. And rewards the super-fatties with diabetes that ate themselves into severe obesity. /// Again: that is the function of insurance. Like car insurance only rewarding those who get in accidents.

    4. There are some good things about Obamacare, but the good things are mostly statistical outliers compared to high costs. /// Ha, ha……please name wtf you are talking about? NAME any statistical outlier?==Being under 26? Having had a medical condition 10 years ago?? What???

    5. Since Obamacare, Medicare premiums have gone up dramatically, I’ve been told. /// The primary motivation for O-Care was insurance premiums going up 3-4X the rate of inflation. I don’t know about Medicare….but assume it would track.

    6. Insurance isn’t supposed to punative. /// How else do you appreciate “for profit” for a non free market driven activity?

    7. If they implemented an Obamacare style system for car insurance or home insurance, it would also be disaster. /// How so?

As all too often: you got nothing.

    • NewFormatSux says:

Why do you bother with your talking points. When ObamaCare passed you said it would make things worse, roughly what people are complaining about now. So why pretend you expected something else?

      • bobbo, we think with words and flower with ideas says:

I don’t recall saying exactly that…..but maybe close enough? what I said, or meant to say with what I said was that O-Care “would not work” but it was a necessary first step to change the system from For Profit to Universal single Payer coverage.

Course….I did not even consider that the Pukes would intentionally sabotage O-Care THAT IS THE REPUBLICAN APPROVED HEALTH CARE PLAN…before Obama became Pres.

People are NOT complaining about the same things ===>at all. But why go into detail when you don’t get the basics?

  5. Better READ than BLEW says:

Let’s examine that very first (misleading) sentence: For the last 8 years Republicans did everything they could to make sure Obama failed, even when they agreed with what he wanted.

    BULLSHIT!

If anything, what Republican’s have been against is HOW various laws/rules are IMPOSED — NOT for the sole reason to trip up some non-party / non Republican President.

If you’ve been paying attention, “Republican’s” have NEVER been out to “get Obama” or cause him to fail. It may have SEEMED that way given all the wrong moves Obama took over the years. And granted, some Republicans might have actually been “out to get him,” but NOT ALL!!! It’s about as close to RACISM as you can get saying so. It’s like saying all Buddhists are terrorists or something. It’s complete BULLSHIT!

And here’s another little factoid you libtards love to ignore too: when it comes to abortion, the MAJORITY of Republican’s are for freedom of CHOICE just like the majority of you libtards are! Though the liberal left, who always need sensationalism in order to sell their products, always portray “all” Republican’s as “right to life” religious zealots or something which admittedly, a sizable number ARE but not ALL (just like communists are with the Democrat party). Nevertheless, it’s BIGOTED which is really racisms ugly cousin.

Now, onto the third sentence (since the second sentence is just more OPINION masquerading as fact) : And in the last 8 year we went from total economic collapse to doing reasonably well. About all I can say is, HAVE YOU EVEN BEEN TO RURAL AMERICA?! Not the “suburbs” but real “red State” rural America?! Because if you’ve been employed at the same job, meaning the same private company and NOT a government or pseudo government entity for more than 8 or 10 years and you think the economy is good, then you clearly have your head up your ass — or have been very very lucky!

Finally, I hope I don’t have to point out one other very glaring fact about the economic turmoil Obama “inherited” (which is about to repeat itself) — NOT ONE “BANKSTER” was prosecuted nor held responsible in any way for any of their CRIMES! So ya. If I’m a “Republican” then you could say I’m looking for a little PAY BACK!

Seriously, put down that “blue” pill, it’s turning you into a DICK!

  6. NewFormatSux says:

It’s ObamaCare until it’s repealed. this idea that Republicans didn’t cooperate with ObamaCare is false, since they funded it. Ted Cruz, Michelle Bachmann, and others tried to prevent that, but Republicans caved after Obama shutdown the government. Nevertheless, showing that they were against ObamaCare was enough to give Republicans the most seats for them in Congress in a century. Then they went on and kept funding ObamaCare, requiring Republicans to roll the dice with Trump who is reportedly a liberal Democrat. Based on what I’ve seen to date, I think I’m going to have to switch parties and declare myself a liberal.

    • bobbo, we think with words and flower with ideas says:

Basics: No, the Pukes did not “fund” O-Care. It was a whole bunch of Puke Govenors that did not create their own State Programs and opted out of the MediCare Healthcare Expansion programs. But to the current fubar, it all comes down to Puke Fantastic Little Marco who got a bill passed to DEFUND the High Risk Pools that is now resulting in the premium increases complained about.

      Silly Hoomans.

  7. Hmeyers says:

I’ve heard that Trump is going to increase taxes on the wealthy for a middle class tax cut.

    1. Get rid of state tax deduction.
    2. Cap the mortgage interest deduction to a much lower number.
    3. Increase the standard deduction.
    4. Cap itemized deductions at $100,000.

So the wealthy (1%ers) — people with houses valued over $400,000 — will have a lot higher effective tax rates.

And eliminating the state income deduction will favor states with lower levels of taxation like Florida, Washington State, Nevada, Texas, etc.

    So it will combination …
    1) Tax the rich
    2) Tax cut for the middle class
    3) Tax cut for the poor.

More proof Trump is a 1990s Democrat.

    • Mr Diesel - Funny says:

The poor getting a tax cut? You mean the 50% that don’t pay any taxes now?

      • Machete says:

He is going to lower the tax on cigarettes, Red Bull, wine and junk food.

        Oh, and Bling.

      • NewFormatSux says:

        Lower energy bills.

        • Mr Diesel - Funny says:

But think about it, if you like your energy provider you can keep your energy provider.

    • NewFormatSux says:

I wonder what those Democratic Senators in North Dakota, Montana, Indiana, Wisconsin, Florida, Virginia are going to do when faced with a tax increase that hurts states with high tax rates like California and Oregon.

    • Hmeyers says:

I’m under the impression that the “big money” has taken over the Democratic Party is in the process of scamming and looting the Democratic base for dollars.

So they want to rile up the base to loot them — I mean fundraise.

And they don’t care about whether the Democrats are being hurt politically.

It’s predatory wealth extraction from the Democratic base, like Jill Stein or Hillary.

I think the Democratic Party is being looted and pillaged by fundraising profiteers that just want to get rich.

      • NewFormatSux says:

You mean that money raised for the recounts wasn’t legit?

For that matter, Bernie Sanders was a plant, hand-picked by Hillary to be her primary opponent. Search Wikileaks for ‘arrangement’.

        • Hmeyers says:

          Bernie Sanders wasn’t a plant.

Hillary would have wanted to run unopposed during the primaries. She almost succeeded. It was “her turn”.

And, in fact, ever since Hillary lost the Democratic Party fundraisers have, in-fact, been in charge because there is a complete vacuum in the Democratic Party.

The “money men” literally are running the Democratic Party right now, because they don’t even have a DNC chairperson.

A whole lot of Nature and Discovery. Yet to look for Military, History, Smithsonian…but assume they are “somewhere.”

Yet to install Kodi, but that looks like everything anyone could want….. and if not…. go to some media player box with one time fee and if all else then fails…. go with amazon fire stick?

Some movies at shown at 720p in a small screen area which is irritating…but worth the cost. Just got thru watching Ex Machina. Not as good as i was hoping for.

Also…been looking for VR side by side videos to sample as part of my VR explorations and didn’t find them via my computer….just got no compliance messages. On my smart TV….I get the SBS videos……..AND….. I can even get a strong 3-D effect by watching the two pictures thru tubes of rolled up newspaper……Take THAT Gear!

Right now, for instance, PBS Newshour comes on YouTube “Live” everyday at 3PM. I assume I can find other shows that do the same thing?

I regularly channel pause on “cooking shows” and think: “What is this moron going to do?” but still watch until satisfied. NOW: I have to actually search and click. 11. NewFormatSux says:

Marc, you expressed doubt over the Russian hacking story. Another angle is that Russia suffers from Trump’s energy policies. They have been funding anti-fracking campaigns in America for years.
    From Newsweek:

Here in the United States, a Senate report found that the Sea Change Foundation funneled more than $43 million to environmental causes in 2011 — padding the budgets of ardent anti-fracking organizations like the League of Conservation Voters, the Sierra Club and the Natural Resources Defense Council. The Foundation is heavily funded by a Bermuda-based shell corporation with direct ties to Putin and Russian oil interests. The shady firm is currently under indictment for offshore money laundering. . .

The influence of Russian propaganda and the influx of money funneled from the Kremlin to many of America’s most extreme environmental outfits helps explain why anti-fracking attacks continue even though science has confirmed fracking poses no threat to public health.

    • bobbo, we think with words and flower with ideas says:

They’ll cut off all information coming out of the government. All the government agencies like the EPA and dept of labor issue reports on how the country’s doing. They’ll put an end to that, and Trump’s little gang will be the ones who decide whether it gets reported. They’re going to gut the EPA, so pollution will increase, but they’ll hide the pollution reports that the EPA puts out (or stop doing the data collection) so we won’t know exactly how much more polluted we’ll be.

    And here we have…

Federal agencies ordered to restrict their communications

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/federal-agencies-ordered-to-restrict-their-communications/2017/01/24/9daa6aa4-e26f-11e6-ba11-63c4b4fb5a63_story.html

Trump administration officials instructed employees at multiple agencies in recent days to cease communicating with the public through news releases, official social media accounts and correspondence, raising concerns that federal employees will be able to convey only information that supports the new president’s agenda.

The new limits on public communications appear to be targeting agencies that are charged with overseeing environmental and scientific policy, prompting criticism from officials within the agencies and from outside groups focused on climate change.

The Environmental Protection Agency as well as the Agriculture and Interior departments now have formal policies restricting what they should convey to the public about their work.

They’re doing things they don’t want you to see. Otherwise, why would they be hiding it? Be afraid, be very afraid.

      https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/speaking-of-science/wp/2017/02/01/canadian-scientists-were-followed-threatened-and-censored-they-warn-trump-could-do-the-same

The Environmental Protection Agency’s once-prolific Twitter account has not stirred since Inauguration Day. Neither has its blog, where staff used to write often about the agency’s research, regulations and “Why Science Matters” — as one of the last entries put it.

Both have been dark since President Trump took over the White House, not long after telling a reporter “nobody really knows” whether Earth’s climate is changing. His administration almost immediately moved to restrict scientific departments across the federal government from talking to the media and the public.

White House officials have denied trying to censor public research bodies. Their counterparts in Canada denied the same several years ago — as scientists in that country reported that government minders were following them around, listening in on them and threatening them for speaking out of turn in public.

They’ll say lack of information/regulation will help the market expand…and as everything they do and don’t do: will bring “more jobs” to the USA.

Its going to get pretty ugly before the base pulls their head out of Pedro’s ass…. what with him greasing the skids 24/7.

    • Hmeyers says:

      Probably a good thing.

I don’t like bureaucrats writing their talking points as fact.

Rather than discuss climate change, I will use a different example … the Big Bang.

NASA web pages treat the Big Bang as fact, but in the last 5 years, the scientific news on the Big Bang has been bad, badder and worse — and in recent times some scientists are digging up ideas like “variable speed of light” (ideas that at least in the past have been discredited, but doesn’t mean it couldn’t be true).

I believe humans are ignorant, so humans love social media and group think and “fitting in”. It’s what non-thinkers do to get a sense of security.

And ignorant humans love to repeat. Because its their only way to participate.

Climate change and the environment are important issues of the day, government employees adding to the “monkey chatter” accomplishes nothing.

They should be focusing on their jobs, not goofing around on social media. They don’t let people in private sector do that either.

Social media is to deep thought what McDonalds is to fine dining.

      • Hmeyers says:

Note: I could see electric cars defeating conventional cars just by simpler maintenance and less moving parts.

If Elon Musks gets the battery tech right.

I’m not an Elon Musk fan, per se, but I sure like what he has done with the thinking on electric cars.

      • Phydeau says:

So you’re in favor of governmental agencies forbidden to share what they’re working on to the taxpayers that fund them? You’re OK with Trump stifling all governmental info that doesn’t support his agenda?

You’re no better than the clueless, self-destructive wingnuts. But thanks for the strained rationalization. 🙄

        • Hmeyers says:

Federal government agencies produce data and statistics which are then published.

The rank and file paper-shufflers don’t need to be playing around on social media.

I’m pretty sure if Flint, Michigan’s water sucks, that’ll be in the monthly reports.

          • Phydeau says:

What the government agencies disseminate is not “playing around on social media”, it’s valuable information about how the country is doing. Why do you and NFS want to remain ignorant?

          • Phydeau says:

And if Trump has his way, we won’t know if the water in Flint or anyplace else sucks, because he’ll suppress any data that doesn’t show America is Getting Great Again. 🙄

          • Hmeyers says:

Yes, and he’ll die his hair black and grow a little Hitler mustache.

Or do you think he’ll opt for the Darth Vader helmet instead?

          • Phydeau says:

Your concession is gracefully accepted. Better luck next time. 🙂

      • bobbo, we think with words and flower with ideas says:

Ha, ha….HM: I know you are just trying to make me laugh.

You got the science wrong and the criticism wrong too.

You’ve cut the cord: lots of good science debates and presentations on Youtube. Linda Randall, Lawrence Krause, Robin (?) Cox, Machio Kiko (sp)….all at a level more advanced than Bill Nye who does a good intro level job.

I’ll give you I don’t understand how they can figure out “inflation” allowing for light to travel faster than it should….has to do with General Relativity I think in that space itself is expanding …but I thought light’s speed was independent of relative motion? Maybe thats only for trains?

I love that I don’t understand it. Gives me more time to waste on other issues.

        • Hmeyers says:

The crap for the general public on astronomy is utter trash.

          It’s like 99% turds, 1% physics.

I personally wouldn’t spend 5 seconds watching a YouTube video on any of the mathematical sciences.

If average Joe Blow likes a video on science, it means it was dumbed down to NOT contain any science.

          • bobbo, we think with words and flower with ideas says:

Count me in. I try not to be too tired so I can pay attention.

Krause has a wicked sense of humor, very liberal. Randall is quite demanding that science is making progress….hates the word “mystery” and so forth.

Sad …. to be bored with the Universe?

        • Hmeyers says:

The Big Bang is a creationist myth invented by a Catholic priest as the scientific version of creationism.

Back in the 1960s, it looked like they were on to something when they discovered what appeared to be uniform cosmic microwave background radiation.

In the last 50 years they’ve added countless “changes” to try to adapt it to new information we have discovered, particularly with space telescopes and experiments.

And in recent times, it’s starting to look like a patchwork quilt of bullshit stitched together as poorly as Frankenstein.

None of the things that could substantially lend credibility to it in the last 5 years have turned out “right”, and 3 or 4 new twists make it look highly improbable.

And space telescopes find new observations regularly that don’t fit with the Big Bang whatsoever.

But the real problem is that even though the Big Bang looks increasingly dodgy, no one has any idea what you replace it with.

So you simply don’t see Big Bang news any more, because human tendency is to want to fill that void with something … but no one has any decent ideas.

          • bobbo, we think with words and flower with ideas says:

thanks HM: you are motivating me to check into this. “I would have said” for instance that the Background Cosmic Radiation was one of the key pieces of evidence in support of the Big Bang….. and that more and more the BB is confirmed.

You might be confusing points of concern or seeming inconsistencies as going to the heart of the theory rather than being an artifact of how much those physicists are finding out….. most recently gravity waves and such?

I saw Lisa Randall talk about BB and Dinosaurs about a week ago. Seems to me she mentioned what was grabbing her interest about……and I just can’t recall it. If she poo poo’d the BB, she didn’t emphasize it.

I’m even going to Google (Big Bang Uncertain) and see if there is a shred of anything to what you say……….. right now …………I doubt it.

One of my proudest moments was when I told Obama, “You will not fill this Supreme Court vacancy.”

    Mitch McConnell, 2017:

Apparently there’s yet a new standard now, which is to not confirm a Supreme Court nominee at all. I think that’s something the American people simply will not tolerate.

    BWAHAHAHAHA!

Politicians are a different breed, but it takes a special kind of soulless one to say these two things.

    • Phydeau says:

Personally, I think that since Trump is now a lame duck since being elected, he shouldn’t be allowed to pick a new Supreme Court justice. It should wait until the next administration.

      🙄 🙄 🙄 🙄

But seriously, f*** them. We lived with 8 justices for almost a year, and Republicans were clamoring to assure us that it’s no big deal. So it won’t be a big deal to go with 8, or 7 if another one dies, for another 4 years.

      • bobbo, we think with words and flower with ideas says:

The link is a worthwhile read. Makes me think that “all politicians lie” and I look more closely at the list.

……………… not much there. Most of them revealing more about the “general attitude” of Obama rather than any ACTION taken that would help or hurt anyone.

EG: more black men in jail. I accept that is not true…. but I think it fairly represents a more general idea that Obama thought too many black men or even people were in jail. No negative impact on anyone though…… so what is the real point?

IMPACTFUL ACTIONS: invading countries, removing benefits, shifting tax burdens etc: aren’t on the list.

So, again: all politicians lie. Still: doesn’t make them all the same or in this case: Trump is “ok” because Obama lied?

I can also feel sympathy for Leslie Jones. All public figures take abuse and where and what kind you are capable of absorbing is individual.

On balance: I think Milo should be on Twitter, and Leslie should choose to stay off. About the Goons that Milo encouraged to be racist and overly aggressive….. yeah, they should be reviewed, warned….. etc.

Twitter is a useless waste of valuable time, much like this blog.

      • bobbo, the pragmatic existential evangelical anti-theist says:

Well….I got sidetracked…I think. I tried to google the cause of the protest and first thing was that Milo had been banned from Twitter for attacking Leslie Jones. Her tweets were shown but not his…so I went looking.

What the crowd in Berkeley hopefully was more upset about was Milo had previously been temporarily banned from Twitter for making White Power type racists statements together with his recent College scholorship fund for Whites only and then Banned from Twitter again. But …. like too many disputes, its dissolves into who is worse…..and on that…. physical violence is worse than tweeting, even though the latter can motivate the former. Motivate: not cause.

I dunno. colleges don’t seen to be the bright progressive places they were when I was a kiddie. Everything corrupted over time.

  21. Phydeau says:

Looks like Trump’s Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch founded a “Fascism Forever” group while he was in high school, and continued it in college.

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4182852/amp/Trump-s-SCOTUS-pick-founded-club-called-Fascism-Forever.html

Now I can hear the wingnuts cranking up the rationalization machine, so here’s a question for you: What if Merrick Garland, Obama’s SC nominee, had formed a “Communism Forever” group in high school, and continued it in college?

That’s right, shameless wingnuts that you are, you would have screeched and clamored that it immediately disqualified him for the position. But Gorsuch? No problem! Y’all likes you a little fascism anyway, admit it. 😉

    • NewFormatSux says:

Yes, because the Democrats mean it. Here Gorsuch is not supporting fascism, but referring to the liberals as fascists. Anyone with knowledge of history would realize that this is the case.

      • Phydeau says:

        That’s right!

People who accuse others of being fascist are fascist themselves.

People who accuse others of being racist are racist themselves.

People who accuse others of being sexist are sexist themselves.

        Et cetera…

        Or was there something else?

    • Phydeau says:

NFS, you never disappoint me in your rationalizations. Never stop being you. 😉

Sure, maybe it’s just a dumb joke. But if Garland had created “Communism Forever” you and all the other wingnuts would have called it reason enough to disqualify him. You’re that tedious and predictable. 🙂

Big whoop, he was a snotty little entitled rich boy at a fancy prep school. I’m sure he’s totally different now. 🙄 🙄 🙄

  22. Hmeyers says:

The current state of the Democratic Party:

    1) Phydeau = softie
    2) Bobbo = conservative

Phydeau actually reasonably argues his point of view with rhetoric and discussion.

Bobbo argues for things like freedom of speech and freedom of expression.

The Republican are little better. Raise your hand if you think Paul Ryan wouldn’t eliminate Medicare if he could and if you think the average Republican doesn’t support outsourcing, H1B1 visa job theft, shipping jobs to Mexico.

Both Democrats and Republicans love mega-corps.

The only difference is that Republicans always loved mega-corps, and that the current Democratic love of mega-corps has heavily damaged their support outside the coastal areas.

    • NewFormatSux says:

There’s a bunch of Republican ‘pundits’ biting their tongue about how bad the Carrier deal is and that it would be more efficient to ship the jobs out.

    • Phydeau says:

I actually agree with you that the D’s suck up to the mega-corps. I think that’s very practical: it takes millions if not billions to run for office, and that’s where the money is.

What’s been lost in the shuffle is campaign finance reform. You dance with who brung ya, as they say in Texas. As long as candidates need millions to run, they will listen to what the mega-corps say more than what the people say.

Now that R’s are in power, we’ll see even more favorable laws for mega-corps. And the average wingnut is the one getting screwed. :/

      • NewFormatSux says:

So how about campaign finance reform that changes the maximum donation from $2700 to $270000000? Then you only need a handful of wealthy people who agree with you to bankroll your campaign, and don’t have to go begging for all these rich donors bundling $5000 checks at fundraisers for $300k at a time. It worked for Eugene McCarthy who knocked LBJ out of the race, and the establishment responded by passing campaign finance reform, Nixon cackling all the way.

    • bobbo, we think with words and flower with ideas says:

HM–nice review. Independent of accuracy is the recognition of differences. Its key to thinking better each and every day.

      I quibble.

I am every bit as soft as Phydeaux. I am also however what I catchphrase as: pragmatic. Doesn’t matter what you think, like, wish for….. IF IT DOESN’T WORK.

The telling fork in the road is when you apply the rationality. It comes AFTER identifying one’s VALUES.

I value the many over the few. IE==the working and middle classes, the 99% over the International Corporations/1% =======>then I apply pragmatism. Take minimum wage. Favoring the Many over the Few, it should be as high as possible, just before it starts to erode the job base.

I have no jealousy or animosity towards the AlreadyTooRich. Societies are better off, stronger, more capable of self defense etc when PRODUCTIVITY is not eroded by too much wealth being hoarded at the top.

Its all pragmatism…… and telling shit from shinola.

      • NewFormatSux says:

        >it should be as high as possible, just before it starts to erode the job base

That would be $0, as the New York Times editorialized in 1990.

  23. Phydeau says:

Well dang, even a blind hog can find an acorn once in a while. Trump actually did something right: Criticized the Israeli government, sort of, for all the illegal settlements in Palestinian territory (universally condemned by pretty much all nations except for the USA).

Why deny Israel the same druthers?

      ……………………… same for Russia.

REALPOLITIK: one of the nastiest subjects one can deal with…………… or not.

Get ready to bend over… Republicans are going to repeal Dodd-Frank.

    http://nypost.com/2017/02/03/trump-taking-steps-to-roll-back-dodd-frank-financial-regulations/

Trump will also sign a presidential memorandum Friday that instructs the Labor Department to delay implementing an Obama-era rule that requires financial professionals who charge commissions to put their clients’ best interests first when giving advice on retirement investments.

Relax, financial professionals. Under Trump, you will still be able to put your own profits before your clients’ best interests. Making America Great Again! 🙄

That likely includes a review of the CFPB, which vastly expanded regulators’ ability to police consumer products – from mortgages to credit cards to student loans.

Get ready to be screwed by your mortgage company, your credit card company, and your student loan holder, and any other big company you might do business with.

    • bobbo of the realpolitik school of brass tacks says:

Yeap…… after decades, I moved from Wells Fargo that is many times more geographically convenient, to a Credit Union.

I hope with the coming crash that Wall Street is sent to jail and our credit infranstructure is rebuilt by funding local small banks and credit unions.

      Won’t happen. Just saying.

      • NewFormatSux says:

More regulation of banks makes this less likely, as regulations hit small businesses more than big businesses, when you take into account the revenues available.

      • NewFormatSux says:

Are you sure you actually moved away from Wells Fargo?

    • NewFormatSux says:

Dodd Frank created a separate agency that does not answer to anyone, whose leadership does not answer to the President, and whose funding does not come from Congress, that can then issue whatever rules it likes with the power to close banks, and they don’t even tell people what the rules are. It should be repealed.

  25. Machete says:

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2017/02/03/trump-to-order-rollback-friday-of-regulations-aimed-at-finance-industry-top-aide-says/

The Dodd-Frank Act, hated by Wall Street and Republican members of Congress, was enacted in the wake of the financial crisis of 2008 that brought on the Great Recession and during the presidential campaign was described derisively by many Republican leaders as “Obamacare for banks.”

Sure, let’s allow big banks to buy and sell and make risky investments with our money, without supervision. What could go wrong? Oh, another recession like the one in 2008. Right.

    Another great quote:

Trump’s administration is packed with Wall Street veterans. The actions Cohn described, which were also confirmed by a White House official, represent Trump’s first and most forceful effort to unravel the regulatory legacy of the Obama administration.

Packed with Wall Street veterans. How’s that feel, wingnuts? Packed with Wall Street veterans. How’s that swampy-drainy thingy working out for ya? Not so good, it seems.

Feeling that buyer’s remorse yet, wingnuts? You will. You will.

    • NewFormatSux says:

You ask how’s that swampy drainy while linking to an article that describes draining the swamp.
Dumping lots of regulations is part of the plan. Last minute regulations are especially easy to do. Not sure how Dodd Frank comes into it since it was passed a long time ago. How old are the rules being repealed?
Anything within six months can be done with majority vote that cannot be repealed.

      • Phydeau, not actually packed with Wall Street veterans says:

Just saw this… so cute, NFS! You think a government “packed with Wall Street veterans” is going to clean up Wall Street.

    • Machete says:

Do you research anything before spewing your bullshit?

The Dodd-Frank Act, signed into law in 2010, was sold to the American people as the solution to our economic woes and the financial crisis that left so many Americans financially insecure. The 2,300 page bill was codified based on the premise that it would promote financial stablity, end too big to fail, and lift our nation’s economy.

Nearly six years since its enactment, we should look around and ask ourselves if any of Dodd-Frank’s promises have come to fruition. Is our economy more stable? Are taxpayers no longer on the hook for bailouts? And are Americans better off today than they were six years ago? The answer is a resolute no.

Really? Really? Republicans, completely owned by the rich in America (as opposed to the Democrats, only mostly owned) have a plan to save average Americans from the predations of the rich?

        You’re a special kind of stupid, aren’t you? 😀

Or maybe just a mindless Republican shill?

Republicans like Too Big To Fail. They can get more government welfare that way. If they fail, they don’t pay the price for their own mistakes, you and I do with government bailouts.

I continually marvel at how Republicans get non-rich people to vote against their own interests… SMH

Hey bobbo, I’m trying your way of annotating your name… test…

    • Phydeau, packed with Wall Street veterans says:

      LOL it worked! Woohoo! 😀

      • bobbo always ready with a fake nom de flame says:

Yeah…I started that a few years ago when people were hijacking other peoples names causing a lot of confusion.

some of the fake names were quite clever but event he good ones were confusing as you didn’t know which of the all stars was responding.

So….I figure with the constant Lead In…one can tailor the Name with add on’s and get the best of both worlds. For about a year, I changed it with every post I made……. it takes effort. does help to focus the intent of the posting to have a 10 word summary as part of the name.

        Have Fun.

……..and “you” are not packed with Wall Street veterans.

I suggest: Phydeau, noting Trump is packing his cabinet with Wall Street Criminals….. or whatever is floating your boat.

        • NewFormatSux says:

Yea, only Phydeau could mess that up.

        • NewFormatSux says:

Phydeau, I didn’t think it was possible for someone to make bobbo look competent. Well done sir!

You’re right and I was wrong, NFS… gotta throw you a bone once in a while. 😉

    A new prediction:

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/trump-to-inherit-more-than-100-court-vacancies-plans-to-reshape-judiciary/2016/12/25/d190dd18-c928-11e6-85b5-76616a33048d_story.html

This is an article about Trump appointing new judges. Down at the bottom we read…

But Wheeler warned that there are important limitations to Trump’s power. For one thing, many of the judges most likely to leave their appointments in the coming years were appointed by Republican presidents, meaning there will be fewer opportunities to shift the partisan makeup.

And perhaps more importantly, 28 of the 50 states will be represented by at least one Democratic senator, including large ones such as California, Florida and New York. Senate leaders have a tradition of considering nominees only if they are supported by both senators representing their state — and Democratic senators are expected to bargain hard with the Trump administration, just as Republican senators did with Obama’s.

The Republicans in the Senate will ignore this tradition. They will ignore the objections of Democratic senators and appoint whatever judges in their states that Trump wants, regardless of any Democratic objections.

We’re going to hear the word “unprecedented” a lot for as long as Trump is president. 🙄

You didn’t answer the question. Just deflection and passive aggressiveness.

      • Phydeau, not actually packed with Wall Street veterans says:

Dang, I’m slipping… I always try to be actively aggressive! 😛

But seriously, almost everyone predicted Clinton would win, so what’s your point?

Great handle there too, but I think it would look better framed with asterisks:

    Start a new discussion. PLEASE.

    • Phydeau, not actually packed with Wall Street veterans says:

I’m with you EA, but there seems to be nothing that can bring outraged wingnut traffic here. All the major stupid stuff is being done by Trump and the Republicans in Congress. MacCullough has to find some obscure NYU professor to stir up the wingnuts, while ignoring all the f-ups of Trump and congressional Republicans. That won’t work forever.
