Tom Stumpf, Principal, at least for now!

The Associated Press – 4/1/2006:

Dozens of high school students protested a temporary school policy forbidding students from displaying the U.S. flag — as well as flags from other countries — amid racial tensions following immigration rallies.

Skyline High School Principal Tom Stumpf said American flags were brazenly waved in the faces of Hispanic students and in one case a Mexican flag was thrown into the face of another student.

“When it involves the American flag and its abuse in vilifying other people, we simply will not tolerate it,” Stumpf said. “They were using the symbol derisively as misguided patriotism.”

Students were warned about the policy Friday and several were suspended, although Stumpf would not provide details. Then, about 100 students protested during lunch time.

  1. Me says:

What a tool. If someone is offended by the American flag, they can get the hell out. Period.

  2. framitz says:

It seems that the article made a poor choice of words. Some of the students were ABUSING our flag. A patriotic display is another thing altogether.

I’m not defending the guy for prohibiting the flag, but I’m not sure he is so wrong if the flag is being disrespected and misused.

  3. Me says:

They were waving the flag. That’s not abuse. The principal is a tool. Honor the country you’re in or get out.

  4. James Hill says:

The abuse you speak of was pride in America, not Aryian power.

Mexicans get offended easy, from what I’ve seen on the TV.

  5. Mr. Fusion says:

The abuse you speak of was pride in America, not Aryian power.

Not when it is waved in the face of an opposing party. That makes it a weapon. Pride in America is not something attained by waving a flag or beating up some non-Americans. Saying you are better then others is bigotry, plain and simple.

Patriotism is doing what is right for your country. It is not by shouting pro-American slogans, wearing the flag on your shoulder, or blindly following the President.

As unfortunate as the Principals decision was, it was the right thing to do to defuse violent confrontation.

  6. Me says:

If those kids took the American flag down and put it back up upside down, they should have been shot or at least pushed out of the way with a bulldozer so the flag could be restored.

If they don’t like the culture that’s already here, they can leave. That principal can leave with them. His job as an American is to teach that American culture is superior. Not all cultures are equally valid as shown by a bunch of little sack-blows that would disprespect the flag of a country that shouldn’t have even let them in in the first place.

  7. Wayne Bradney says:

    Me,

    >>They were waving the flag. That’s not abuse. The principal is a tool. Honor the country you’re in or get out.

I wonder how you feel about the Abu-Graib situation?
