Oh yeah, type it like you mean it, baby!

From all the different elements of Graphic Design, if there’s been one single aspect that stunningly fascinating and extremely good to look at and create, TYPOGRAPHY it must be! I’ve always been amazed at how some of the finest and most awesome looking work is possible with words and letters and them alone. Whoever said that advertising works best with a visual still hasn’t seen these. Simply fantastic stuff. Absolutely mind blowing, I must admit!

    Cute…
But I love the sheer craftmanship of the teletype word art. Remember the guys were typing it one letter at the time and then saving it on perforated paper…
    like these… http://www.chris.com/ASCII/art/html/nakedladies.html

  2. Gyro-Gearloose says:

What made Teletype art so cool (I’m talking about the old style baudot TTY’s, not the newer ASCII machines) was the ability to overprint. Because linefeeds weren’t automatically generated with every carriage return, a line could be overprinted as many times as necessary to get the required shading. As I recall you could still to TTY art on the ASR33’s which were ASCII machines but the overprinting was either not possible or not as easy to achieve.

Here’s the full version of Deep Throat as animated ASCII.

  4. JoaoPT says:

    LOL

  5. James Hill says:

Wow. Not hard to figure out that these guys don’t get laid.

  6. ChrisMac says:

Back in the day i had a proggy that would print out gif’s like that on the old dot matrix

the shitty ones are done by hand.. the good ones are generated

  7. James Hill says:

So you’re saying you didn’t get laid back in the day, or just in general?

  8. Jägermeister says:

#6 – Wow. Not hard to figure out that these guys don’t get laid.

James, you having sex with your sister doesn’t count as getting laid… 😉

  9. James Hill says:

But you look cute in a skirt?

  10. Jägermeister says:

    #10

James, you’re gayness is shining through… now stop it before some republican senator wants you as his page.

  11. Gregory says:

the shitty ones are done by hand.. the good ones are generated

Reverse that, and its true. I’ve never seen a generated one that didn’t suck.

  12. Mike B. says:

I’ve heard John comment several times on his shock that some web censors filter out his site. This is why, John- this is why…

Perhaps you missed the name above… Dvorak Uncensored. Move to U.A.E. if you don’t like the content.

  14. xjonx says:

Yes the “photo realistic” have to be generated. When I was in high school (1988) I had a collection of Playboy centerfolds in ASCII for the Apple 2e. Not much to look at now, but it was able to give teen age nerds at the time a stiffie. Now I kind of wish I had saved them.

  15. Mike B. says:

@ #13 It’s not a question as to if I personally object to the content. However, John has on multiple occasions on TWIT and a few weeks ago on Cranky Geeks expressed his bewilderment at why some webfilters block DU under the “sex” category, stating “we have no nudity or sexual content. Yet at least 3-4 of the posts over the past few days would potentially create HR issues in many corporate American environments.

    I’m just sayin’, that’s all.
