73-Year-Old Woman Jailed for Feeding Birds – – The Intelligencer/Wheeling News-Register — Let’s not forget this story. Surely something other than “hard time” would be a better solution.

Belmont County Northern Division Court Judge Frank Fregiato had “no other choice” than to jail a 73-year-old Bridgeport woman who was charged three times with feeding pigeons in her yard, said Belmont County Prosecutor Christopher Berhalter.
Anna Stahanczyk was in the Belmont County Jail from Jan. 26 to Feb. 2 on a “nuisance” charge, a Belmont County Sheriff’s Department spokesman confirmed Thursday evening.

Stahanczyk was jailed by Fregiato for violating terms of his 2001 order, which required her to refrain from feeding pigeons at her residence, Berhalter said.

Berhalter said Stahanczyk was “feeding pigeons to the extent of creating a hazard.”

“We’re not talking about a bird feeder,” Berhalter said.

“They (birds) were coming in droves.”

Really? Then why didn’t they peck her eyes out?

Why didn’t the neighbors just buy cats?

My son and I were at a zoo in detroit. We sat down at a picnic table next to some tables where a family reunion was occuring.

I started feeding the seagulls and a few minutes later I had quite a huge swarm. The people next to me were SO pissed. I started feeling bad because the family was too polite to actually complain about it. They were basically a pack of Flanders.

My son (3 1/2 years old) started chasing the birds. Of course the family reunion party had a small child who also wanted to chase the birds. They were practically beating the child to make her stop. Did they actually think the kids would actually catch one?

I figure if my cat, who was genetically bred to catch birds couldn’t catch one, my kid never could.

Why stop at pigeons? Why not feed cockroaches too? Pigeons = rats with feathers. Hope the slammer teaches her a lesson.

She knew the consequences, so she performed a courageous act by defying the law for what she believes is her moral right. I see her as a heroine not a victim. We need more people like her these days.

OK if this is the women I’ve heard about before, then ‘feeding the pigeons’ doesn’t quite give you the right image.

She has a dry fountain, six or eight feet across that she fills with 50 pound bags of bird feed. This attracts thousands of pigeons who, while waiting, do their stuff on the neighbors houses, cars, and other objects. Perhaps you’d like to live next to this but most people would not.

What a great opportunity for the neighbors to get rid of the vermin.
Jail the animal hoarder for thirty days (she is proably too old for therapy to be successful), then use a combination of feed and throw nets to capture the pigeons and then sell them to a rendering plant.
