I recently started making notes on battery life of my cameras so I could know in advance that I was going to run out of juice before it happens. That way I can charge an extra battery or whatever. I have not seen a good public database with this information. So I’m inviting readers to take some notes on their personal digital cameras when they go coast-to-coast with a freshly charged battery pak and take it to the end. It will probably take a little longer to develop this database than I’d hope, but may as well start now. You can post you results on this message or email me at john@dvorak.org.

Here is what to include:
Camera brand and model
mWh and type battery info (if you can get it)
total number of pics taken on full charge
total megabytes used
type of shooting either (mostly flash, mixed, no flash)

This should do the trick. For example my dimage X50 would be as follows:

Konica Minolta X50
1800 mWh Li-ion rechargeable battery
142 photos
257 megabytes
mixed

In this case the battery was not fully discharged (almost), but the information is still valuable.

Once this gets going I will put up a separate web page as a reference for users.

  1. John:
    2 Variables you must consider.

1.The age of the battery and how many times it was used prior (HALF LIFE) The more times the nbattery is recharged the shorter the battery life.

    2. How long the camera is turned on and off and how long it it is left on when used.

How do we know you are not just using this as a pretext to find out what brand and model of digital cameras we own so you can come to our houses and steal them?

Another variable to consider, with a rechargeable battery, is the brand of the battery. I recently bought a great Olympus C-7000 which I totally love. I bought the camera from an online site, which offered an additional generic rechargeable battery as part of the deal. The generic is spectacularly awful at holding a charge. I have purchased other off-brand rechargeable batteries and been delighted. Not this time.

I think John Dvorak gave up cat suite when he got the TV Gig,
I’m sure hes more interetsed in cash and jewels.
    Besides
The average consumer digital camera is probably around $500.
certainly not worth the trip to your house. Or is it????? 🙂

Olympus makes the best consumer Digital camera!
The C-7000 is outstanding, Enjoy it.
