News Hounds: Flim-Flam and Flash: The First Lady’s Speech Offensive to Some FYI.
TRANSCRIPT OF THE INTERVIEW BETWEEN BILL O’REILLY AND MICHELLE MALKIN, MAY 4, 2005
Video clip of Laura Bush, April 30, 2005, addressing the White House Press Correspondents’ Association dinner: “I am married to the President of the United States and here’s our typical evening. Nine o’clock, Mr. Excitement here is sound asleep and I’m watching ‘Desperate Housewives’ (laughter) with Lynn Cheney (more laughter). Ladies and gentlemen, I am a desperate housewife.” [End clip.]
O’REILLY: By now most of you have probably seen Laura Bush’s comedy routine at a Washington dinner last Saturday night. Now, I thought it was great, but not everybody agrees. Joining us from Washington is FOX News Analyst [sic] and syndicated columnist Michelle Malkin, who has mixed feelings about the situation. That’s true, right? Mixed feelings? I read your column today.
MALKIN: Yeah. I would say so. I mean it’s about a 1.5 on my outrage-o-meter, but I’ve definitely heard from a lot of social conservatives who were bothered by some of the remarks and …
O’REILLY: Alright, I don’t care about social conservatives. I care about you, Michelle, you’re our pal.
MALKIN: Yes. Yeah. Absolutely.
O’REILLY: You – were you offended?
MALKIN: I am a huge fan of Laura Bush’s and her grace and her charm definitely stood out over the course of the campaign season in stark contrast, I believe, to the other potential First Lady and I think that’s what a lot of people admire about her. So what was a little bit disturbing and disappointing, I think, was that some of these jokes, particularly the ones about the Chippendales and the old one – I know it’s an old joke about, about the horse – startled people a little bit and startled me.
O’REILLY: Yeah, but Michelle, Michelle, Michelle, I’m talkin’ about…
MALKIN: I think, I think it was a little bit beyond the line.
Maybe she’s talking abiout the Jon Stewart version.
The First Lady should always deserve some leeway.
Somehow O’Reilly kind of makes my stomach regurgitate. I can think of no Television personality more full of himself. Please, JUST SHUT UP !!! Turn off his mike !!!
LB has the “grace” of a 4ton hammer – BUT the routine was very funny.
O’Reilly’s a twerp.
Oh good lord. What’s with people without a sense of humor?
I saw the talk and thought to myself, ‘thank god she’s showing she’s not just a stuffed shirt’. The ability to laugh as oneself is a beautiful thing. She was showing she was human and approachable and that’s completely appropriate. (No, I don’t like the republicans, and I don’t like the Bushes, but in this case there is nothing to coomplain about.) The Repulican party, it appears, can just never be uptight enough.
Oh, and the Jon Stewart parody with freaking hilarious. But I’m guessing the Bushes didn’t think so. That would take a major ability to laugh at oneself to enjoy that!
I like how he kept trying to get her to stop generalizing, and make a statement about her own feelings – and she had a tough time doing it. 🙂
O’REILLY: Alright, I don’t care about social conservatives. I care about you, Michelle, you’re our pal.
MALKIN: Yes. Yeah. Absolutely.
O’REILLY: You – were you offended?
Yeah, all the conservative talk show hosts are shocked, shocked, at the First Lady’s jokes. I tuned into [one frothing lunatic I won’t name] last week and heard him complain about how the elites are making filthy jokes and living it up while Our Boys are slugging it out in Iraq and Afghanistan.
It’s as if there’s a central office that faxes out instructions to every talk show host in the country every morning: “Today’s topic: Laura Bush’s offensive jokes….” That’s what’s meant by “talking points,” right?
