Seeing this bumper sticker led me to this wenbsite. Bumper stickers work!
BREASTMILKACTION.ORG — Does anyone find it a little weird that you have to form a pressure group to promote breast milk when it part of the human reproductive system? How did anyone ever get convinced that breast milk was bad and people should use chemical formulas?
Breast Milk Action (BMA) is a grassroots organization, community-based and working with unions, to advocate the need to monitor community chemical body burdens by examining breast milk.
“How did anyone ever get convinced that breast milk was bad and people should use chemical formulas?”
John, john, john. You are SO naive sometimes. Does anyone make money off of breast milk? Nope. Does anyone make money off of “chemical formulas”? Yep. Do corporations lie to sell their crap? Yep. Did the formula companies lie about the advantages of their products? Yep.
To make a long story short, the feds took action and now the formula companies have to state that breast milk is better.
There was a time a few decades ago that mothers actually believed that formula was better. In fact, they still believe it. Grandmas around their 50s are SHOCKED that mothers are actually breast feeding nowadays.
To answer your question, corporate fascism and ultimate greed for the dollar has convinced people to buy formula instead. It’s convenient! What they don’t tell you is it provides nearly none of the benefits of breast milk, only the calories that can be consumed by an infant. I’ll leave it at that for today…
I can tell you why from personal experience – breast feeding hurts! Also add to that, infection, teeth, etc… And some women don’t produce enough milk…There are plenty of reasons other than corporate greed as to why women “need” to be encouraged to breast-feed…
hey! some people make money off breast milk!

I was speaking to a friend while he was manning a cash desk in a shop and a woman came over and asked if she “could leave her baby over there” (pointing to a corner of the shop).
I started to laugh at this, but then regretted it when I realised she had actually not said “leave”, but rather “feed”.
It’s the container that is verboten. If the container is out of bounds, then can the contents be any better?
As Kathy correctly points out, there may be problems associated with breast-feeding. My wife, a Registered Nurse, works with new mothers. She has told me on many occasions the difficulties with the bureaucracies that give the mothers cans of formula and vouchers for more, without prompting from the mother’s physician. Because of the ease with which formula is available, it becomes so hard to keep mothers breast-feeding. Also, most work places will not allow the mother the opportunity or facility to pump her milk or store it. Breast-feeding mothers are often still told that it would be better to feed the baby in the RESTROOM !!!
Just after our child was born, I listened in as my mother, wife, and sister discussed breast-feeding. I remember my mother telling the other women that back in the 1950s when I was born, breast-feeding was just not done. It was the same for childbirth where women were totally sedated. Anything else was “third world” and not modern. All hospitals and Doctors did it that way.
I believe we need to change our attitudes on many subjects. Be it homosexuals are born or created, Big Business knows what is best for us, incarceration is the best treatment for drug addicts, Intelligent Design is not about creationism, or many other conceptions we have today.
