The Australian: Burial for 3 million chocolate bars [July 09, 2005] — Let’s hope this doesn’t start a crime fad.

IT was hardly the end envisaged by the advertisers of Mars and Snickers as hundreds of thousands of Australia’s most popular chocolate bars were yesterday dumped, crushed and buried near Lucas Heights in southern Sydney.

With a tip truck and a bulldozer, confectionery manufacturer Masterfoods began the final stage of a week-long product recall in NSW prompted by an extortionist claiming to have poisoned seven chocolate bars.

“By the end of next week, we estimate that 3 million Mars and Snickers bars will have been destroyed, putting an end to this episode,” Masterfoods president Andy Weston-Webb said.
