Gangsta Cellphone
Look who’s talking! People in Miami and Los Angeles chat on their cell phones more than any other Americans, according to a survey of cell phone use in major cities. People in Miami make and receive an average of 298 calls a month — an average of 9-10 calls daily — while Angelenos talk second most, averaging 260 calls per month, a survey of Verizon Wireless users found.
Rounding out the top 5 were Detroit, El Paso, Texas, and Las Vegas. New Yorkers were 11th and Washington failed to find a place in the top 30.
California is also about to pass a ban on hand-held cell phones while driving that would likely cut cell-phone use by car-bound Angelenos dramatically when it takes effect in 2008.
We need more studies about addictions like this. Is it like the dweebs who can’t function without an iPod plugged into their heads — like their lives are vacant without background music?
Like the picture. 🙂
I wonder why they feel the need to use “El Paso, Texas” instead of just “El Paso”?
Is there an El Paso, Colorado? El Paso, North Dakota?
Just curious – since I live in the pacific NW, and am familiar with the need to distinguish between Portland, OR and Portland, ME – let alone Vancouver, WA and Vancouver, BC.
Well, there are two Las Vegases. The older one is in northeastern New Mexico. Couldn’t find two El Pasos though.
I used to live in Las Vegas NV. People there use their cell phones way too much. This includes the tourists (“Hear this, Mom? I just won a hundred bucks!!”). While there, my car was rear ended by a banker using his cell phone while driving. Don’t use your cell phones while driving–not even if you have headphone.
Shootin yer mouth off now has commercial potential.
I kind of wonder how accurate these comparisons are. In San Jose, almost literally, everyone you see on the streets have a cell up to their ear. And the number driving by is nothing short of amazing. I’ve seen more than one homeless person pushing their shopping carts from one trash dumpster to another collecting plastic and cans and talking on their cells. Who the hell are the homeless talking to anyway???
“Who the hell are the homeless talking to anyway???”
The schizophrenics have the voices in their heads on speed dial.
NYC has a ban on talking while driving, and from what I saw the last time I drove through the BQE and the LIE was non-stop, hand held jabberwocky.
Everyone knows that the only thing that El Paso is known for is a bad economy and an abandoned Twin plant city. It is so far west it is almost part of New Mexico and the economy is so bad that you thing your in Old Mexico. That’s why Texas is always added at the end.
