Do you think it might be to keep the pigeons off? That is what we use them for in Canada.

I could possibly see the middle device being used to keep pigeons off, but I don’t see how the other devices could. There are plenty of areas in the top and bottom picture where birds could sit and shit.

However, in all three pictures I don’t see anywhere for people to comfortably sit. (or shit.)

  3. CrbnFox says:

What I don’t understand is why have them in the bottom picture at all? Those hydrants/standpipes have to be built strong enough to withstand the torque of a large wrench to remove the caps.

A person sitting on them isn’t going to affect them at all.

You can see some of the captions do indeed mention places like New York’s Bowery and Seattle. These aren’t to keep pigeons off. They’re to keep people moving along and not loitering.

I live in New England, and many cities are taking out the park benches to make sure the homeless and street gangs don’t set up camp in parks. I’m sure these anti-sit devices will be coming soon.

    Good point.

And thanks for the heads-up on the captions. The only reference I found to the US were the Pro-Sit category (which I found hilarious), but I wasn’t reading carefully enough.

  6. Rob says:

People who are sitting are not SHOPPING. Americans are but sheeple to be fleeced, but it’s harder to fleece ’em when they’re just sitting around.

#4 – yep, when i saw some of those pics, I immediately thought of downtown Seattle (livin south of aforementioned city atm)… Also partially to keep homeless people off those convieniant seats…

37..Mr. Fusion…….yep…..they removed all the benches in one of the malls in Phoenix….took 3 months, but they were put back primarily for the reason you gave.

In some cases, those devices are there because the nearby tenents want to avoid having vagrants hanging around, littering, urinating, and generally being a pain in the ass. I guess when you see enough tragedy you get numb to it and your compassion is replaced with scorn.

But in other cases its because people are jackasses and would begrudge you taking a breather near their precious random flat surface.

One reason I have such remarkable success with women is that I am attentive and take an interest in what interests them. I go in to the shop. I take an active role in picking out clothes and being supportive. Shopping for a woman is exasperating and emotion, and a man who understands that is rewarded well.

I know that another name for this blog is http://www.misogyny.com, but you don’t have to be a knuckle dragger… Shed that stupid male hatred of shopping and be one with the shopping experience. Later, she’ll be one with the giving it up to you experience 🙂
