OK. That’s the name for a new plug-in for Apple TV. It adds YouTube collections as a menu choice for Apple TV – and demonstrates a sense of humor pretty close to my own!

The plug-in will show up at www.awkwardtv.org – sooner or later. Apparently, not yet available for download. Still, looks useful.

If Apple can’t make the media extender a must have, can anyone?

  2. OhForTheLoveOf says:

Wow… That’s great… Now TV can actually be stupider than I ever imagined.

Seriously… What is the point of YouTube? Guys getting hit in the nutsack… rednecks playing with fireworks… teen girls lipsyncing to crappy top 40 songs… What is the draw?

  3. chewy says:

    The draw???

Teen girls dancing to crappy top 40’s songs!!! That’s the draw silly!!

#2 I’m right there with you… maybe I’m too old for that shit or something (though some of my friends actually spend a lot of time on YouTube) but I just don’t get it… besides the video quality of the posted clips is on the low side, how will that translate on a hi-def set? This seems right on line with the proliferating lower tech/entertainment standards I see all around me, crappy video, crappy audio, all so you can just throw it around on every device you own…

Whatever justifies purchasing an Apple TV in your eyes I guess.

  7. Danijel says:

#2 #4 #5 I guess you both are too old. Two old grumpy grandparents!

The point is, regular TV is becoming more are more boring. I currently watch only two shows per day and just leave my TV set off most of the time. YouTube is one of the largest sites where you can actually watch what you want. True, the quality is a bit dodgy, but that’s thanks to the huge media corporations that are killing innovation in order to protect their own assets.

I personally hate the monopoly of the TV industry. Fact is, you have to pay them in advance to use their service, and they can show you what they want. They often cut the show time to show more commercials and there is nothing you can do about it. If there was any alternative to regular TV these days I would take it in a second.

  8. Homer Simpson says:

Big deal you can do this on the PS3 through the browser and watch you tube or any other website that has video for that matter. It does amaze me how easily Apple lovers are impressed and subsequently parted with their money.

  9. James Hill says:

#7 – The point is that YouTube is worse than regular TV, so regular TV being boring doesn’t matter.

As such, this story by itself is a non-factor, as media extenders are supposed to be a winner because they bring multiple forms of media (video, audio, still pictures) to your living room.

#8 – The reason your argument, and the same argument about the X-Box, has failed to gain any traction outside of the gaming community is because there’s a larger market of people who don’t give a shit about console gaming, and don’t want to pay for something they don’t use, than people who do.

Why spend $600 on the failure which is the PS3 when you can spend $300 on a media extender?

#2 – you forgot teenage girls getting hit in the nutsack.

Well, you watch two shows too many…

Back when I owned a TV, it was on a news network or C-Span (or The West Wing) otherwise if was showing a DVD or off. Now, My computer system shows me DVDs, I own all 7 years of The West Wing, and I get news from several of the many many other sources of news. Frankly, being free of the TV allows me to really enjoy my life more.

It is true that you can watch what you want on YouTube… If by miracle your standards are so low that there is actually something you’d want to watch there in the first place.

  12. Danijel says:

#9 I was talking about content, not quality. I was talking about the fact that 90% of the stuff on TV is boring to the 90% of the people (naturally, NOT the same 90% to the same 90% people).I was talking about video on demand. Basically, I prefer to watch rips of shows on YouTube and torrent sites than having to endure the cr@p on the cable every day.

#11 If you don’t watch TV, then you don’t really have any basis of commenting on apple TV product. Go read a book and come back when you’ve watched at least 5 hours of shows a day!

  13. TheGlobalWarmer says:

#11 – At a bare minimum you should watch Lost, all 3 CSI’s, The Sopranos, 2 1/2 Men, and both Stargates (soon to be only 1 🙁 ) Deadwood was excellent as well.

What I would like to see is an all explosions channel.

  14. TheGlobalWarmer says:

Almost forgot – the best thing about YouTube is that you can type in a search term like “vomit” and get pages of people vomiting, even making themselves vomit for fun. It’s so stoopid you start laughing to the point you almost retch yourself.

  15. James Hill says:

#12 – As am I, because the quality argument is too easy to win.

The content on YouTube is, on average, worse than what’s on TV as a whole. What you’re really saying is that you like YouTube’s VOD model because it’s free.

After all, if that’s not what you’re saying, then you’d be using a pay VOD service and loving it… and would have been using that service long before YouTube came to light.

  16. OhForTheLoveOf says:

#12 – I don’t live in a cave… I have chosen not to buy a TV. I know more about TV than the next 10 random people you meet, unless one of them is the ghost of Aaron Spelling.

    #13 – Whatever…

Lost – If you wanna write a show about a bunch of people trapped on an island, it’s good idea to know where you are going with the plot before you start. Otherwise we’ll all know you are making this shit up as you go along.

CSI (whichever) – Hey! I found a dead guy! Quick, grab a blue flashlight…

The Sopranos – DVD exists for a reason.

2 1/2 Men – Isn’t that a sitcom? SportsNight was the last good sitcom.

Stargates (soon to be only 1 🙁 ) – Call me when its down to 0… and I’ll take the New Galactica over that rehashed Roland Emerich spinoff.

Deadwood – Cool. Cowboys who say fuck. I love Walter Hill. He wrote Alien and directed The Warriors (which I would kill for a chance to remake). But maybe its time for him to retire?

Truly, the only thing left on TV that captivates me is C-Span.

  17. Brian says:

    /yawn

Another moronic ‘invention’. The picture quality of youtube vids on my 20″ monitor is bad enough, why in the hell would I want to watch them on my 52″ DLP?

There’s plenty of good tv out there, thank god for DVR and time shifting.

    16-

You don’t own a tv yet you know more about tv than the next 10 people you meet? Suuuure you do buddy. You’re the typical arrogant prick who finds fault in everything, simply because said shows are over your head. You probably have the same arguments over music, where you say that everything new sucks.
