Former Vice President Al Gore is New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton’s worst nightmare in the nation”s first primary, a new poll shows.

If Mr. Gore got into the 2008 presidential nomination contest, he would edge out Mrs. Clinton in New Hampshire 32 percent to 26 percent and defeat the rest of the Democratic contenders, says a 7NEWS-Suffolk University poll of likely voters.

Absent a Gore entry, Mrs. Clinton is the clear front-runner among declared Democratic candidates, with 37 percent, up from 28 percent in the same poll taken in March.

Illinois Sen. Barack Obama is second at 19 percent, followed by both John Edwards and New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson at 9 percent.

Curiouser and curiouser.

  1. Misanthropic Scott says:

It seems likely that the results would be similar around the nation. Gore would be the best option. And, he has already proven he can win a presidential election.

  2. James Hill says:

Gore got his iPhone a few days ago.

  3. ArianeB says:

Maybe Gore should run. I’m in the “anyone but Hillary” camp myself. Democrats will be shooting themselves in the foot in the general election if they pick Hillary. Republicans will do the same if they pick Fred Thompson.

  4. Mike says:

#1, well, he at least proved he could get more votes than George Bush.

  5. TheGlobalWarmer says:

Of course that turd-eating spawn of Hitler will run. Better to see the extinction of all mankind than a Gore presidency.

  6. TheChristianWarmer says:

And bring back the Inquisition, while you’re at it.

  7. TheSpanishWarmer says:

    Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition.

  8. Thomas says:

    #1
Last I checked Gore has not yet won a Presidential election. So he hasn’t “proven” anything.

  9. Misanthropic Scott says:

    #8 – Thomas,

That depends on your definition of win. If your definition is got the most votes and got the most legitimate electoral votes, yes, he did.

If your definition is got appointed to the presidency by the Supremes, then you’re correct.

  10. Misanthropic Scott says:

    Also, quick unofficial blog poll:

Raise your hand if you think the electoral college should be disbanded and the president elected by the people.

(My hand is raised and waving vigorously in between typing.)

  11. TheGlobalWarmer says:

KEEP THE ELECTORAL COLLEGE! It’s there specifically minimize mob rule and to reduce the ability of the more populous states from lording it over the less populous.

Hell, 1 state, 1 vote might be even better. Certainly better than straight popular vote.

  12. TheGlobalWarmer says:

    #6 & #7 – I see the Warmer Brigade is beginning to form. 😉

  13. TheChristianWarmer says:

Silly us. Why did we fight a war for independence and democracy, anyway? Let’s put control of our lives in the hands of autocrats, bigots, fools and…!

    Oh.

  14. Mark Derail says:

    #12 Noooooooooooooooo 🙁

I doubt Gore will run – there has to be a personal need for him.

So he would run for more money, more power? I sincerely doubt it.

What would really interest me is knowing why these articles keep popping up? Who finances these polls?

  15. Misanthropic Scott says:

    #11 – TheGlobalWarmer,

I’m really surprised to hear you come down on that side of the issue. By what right do you believe land should vote? If land gets to vote, wouldn’t it vote against oil exploration, clear cutting, pollution, etc.?

The electoral college is designed to give land the right to vote. Large states with lower population actually end up with a disproportionately high per capita vote. This seems to be against democracy (one person == one vote) to me.

  16. Misanthropic Scott says:

    #5 – TheGlobalWarmer,

Dang!!! I missed it. You already lost. That was the shortest thread in history. Godwin’s Law.

  17. Gore Backer says:

    I hope that Gore runs.
It sure would be better than some corporatist that the Rapeublicans would put up.
As far as Hillary is concerned, she should change her name to Hillary Walton, because she has been called Mrs. Wal Mart in the past.

I would love to see Gore eat up the garbage the Rapeublicans and the Cons and the corporate shills put to him, and spit it right back in their faces, as he should.

As far as I am concerned, Bush was APPOINTED by the Supremes court, who failed to have the votes counted in 2000. So you Cons can get over it. Gore ALREADY won!

  18. bobbo says:

Thats a nice graphic. Stare at the cat long enough and all you see is a (politician in heat.) Gore has had political office, did not distringuish himself, NO VOTE for Gore.

Electorial college is an artifact of our founding. A compromise of the interests at the time to get the nation started–like 3/5th voting. No reason for it today but states have a vested interest in keeping disproportionate power. GOUSA is NOT A DEMOCRACY, it is a REPUBLIC. I wonder where Ann Coulter talking on an IPhone could take this?

  19. mxpwr03 says:

Al Gore is so incredibly boring. At least Obama is charismatic, Hillary may be ignorant of basic economic principles but she can energize people, and the man, the myth, the legend, Joe Biden has a lot of foreign policy points that he gets passionate about.

All I have to say is… lockbox.

I’ll take the money from oil companies and put that in a environmental-lockbox.
I’ll tax the rich more and put that money in a social (in)security-lockbox.
I’ll put carbon emission in a lockbox.
I’ll make sure we put Al Quadea in a lockbox.
    Lockbox.

I could start a 527 group and blast that man’s hopes overnight. Granted I get enough dubious funding.

  20. Misanthropic Scott says:

    #19 – mxpwr03,

I hope you aren’t seriously considering electing the next president based solely on their entertainment value. I personally consider Al Gore to be incredibly well-spoken and articulate. I did and would again vote for him because I believe he will create the best legislation for this country. I believe he has the best environmental policy. I thought so when I voted for Clinton/Gore, even though I would have preferred Gore/Clinton. To base your vote on entertainment potential is silly beyond belief. Why not elect Abbot and Costello (or today’s rough equivalent)? How about Robin Williams? Who among us was not rooting for him to win in Man of the Year?

  21. Mike says:

    Scott,

The US is a union of states. Representative are apportioned to the states, Senators are equally divided among the states, and the President is elected by the states via the “Electoral College.” There is nothing inconsistent with this system. And it is not “less democratic” just because you don’t like it.

  22. natefrog says:

    #16, Scott:

Actually, a recent thread on fetal stem cell research in my local newspaper made it to post #3 before Godwin’s Law was invoked. Naturally, of course, the person making the comparison to Hitler was comparing researchers to Nazis.

  23. Gregory says:

    21 – Mike.

Actually it is “less democratic” because that’s the whole point of the system. It is not a democracy, the USA is not a democracy, and was never supposed to be.

The fact that many think it should be closer to a democracy (or mistakenly think it already is one) shows how static the USA political system is. Is it out of step and out of touch? Maybe. Does that make it wrong? No, it’s just a system. Should it be changed? Maybe, but even if it should (and it could be) it’s not going to without another similar debacle like the 2000 election.

  24. Misanthropic Scott says:

    #21 – Mike,

This is Bellamy’s original pledge of allegiance:

I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation indivisible, with liberty and justice for all

Though it changed a bit in the 20s and then more recently (1954) had the words “under god” added, words I truly hate, we have been saying this or something much like it since 1892. It is time for us to acknowledge that we are indeed a nation, not a federation. The final step to this acknowledgment is to have a national election. We’ve never had one before. It’s time.

  25. Misanthropic Scott says:

    #23 – Gregory,

I’m an idealist and would love to see the electoral college abandoned. You’re an optimist if you think the third time will be the charm.

  26. Misanthropic Scott says:

    #26 – DaveW,

If Al Gore bores you, I hate to say it, but you probably aren’t genuinely interested in the subject matter. He presents his speeches very well in my opinion.

    WRT Hillary:

    1) She tried going with her name Hillary Rodham. Our society is too sexist to allow us to elect Bill with a wife that won’t take his name. So, she changed it during the first election. If that were the biggest compromise of principals made by any of the top contenders, I’d be thrilled.

    2) Don’t you mean that you didn’t like the idea of her calling the shots behind the scenes while he was president?

    3) Don’t you mean that Bill married for power?

  27. Mike says:

#24, It’s a good thing I don’t look to poems for advice on how to structure a system of government.

  28. TheGlobalWarmer says:

    Scott:

We were founded as a republic of states not simply a nation of people as Mike stated better than me. A lot of thought went into the EC specifically so a president could be elected other than by pure popular vote.

Godwin’s law has come up in post #1 in the past threads. Also, the law doesn’t apply if the comparison to Hitler is accurate. 😉 )

Algore is may be articulate but what he articulates is that he’s an elitist, condescending, egotistical, narcissistic, asshat bloviator who’s overly impressed with his overblown sense of his own self importance and so-called destiny.

If you want to get past Godwin’s law, substitute spawn of Ghengis Khan, or spawn of Satan – they both work too.

  29. John Paradox says:

Raise your hand if you think the electoral college should be disbanded and the president elected by the people

I’d rather keep it, but have the electors be PROPORTIONAL to the popular vote, rather than ‘winner takes all’.

    J/P=?

  30. bobbo says:

30–Why do you want to keep it?
