I’m in Des Moines today and caught the Capitol Building all bright and shiny.

One where is Iowa… and nice place to hang up the hats and brains of the elected officials.

  2. Mark says:

Take a tour. They have a beautiful library — open 5 stories high with balconies around the perimeter!

  3. RTaylor says:

I spent a week in Iowa one night. 😉

  4. ECA says:

    1. its to big for what is needed.
    2. Its not energy efficient
    3. Knock it down or sell it for a profit…BUILD a new one, that works better.

  5. Dingman says:

Dayum, you should let me know when you come to Des Moines. I can either take you to the strip club or the political hotspot of the week, whichever trips your trigger.
BTW, what are you doing in Des Moines if you don’t mind me asking?

  6. Gary Marks says:

That’s quite a majestic building. The capitol building in the state where I live is a bit less grand, but then again, we’re not wealthy farmers. We’re just plain folks 😉

  7. natefrog says:

    You’re in Iowa? My condolences…

    But seriously…

If you ever get to Nebraska, you should check out the Penis of the Prairie…err…the State Capitol building in Lincoln. Quite a sight, considering it’s in the middle of bum flippin’ nowhere.

I was born in Iowa (Keokuk), and granted I don’t live there now, but like everyplace we make fun of, it’s far more than it seems at first. The Mississippi river valley is hilly, winding and unbelievably pretty (great for motorcycle riding), the planes are … boring, but vast and impressive. Iowa City is a fantastic University town with one of the best book stores I know of, “Prairie Lights”, (2nd to Powell’s City of Books in Portland which is far and away the best book store in the nation). And I still fondly remember seeing Pink Floyd in Ames (another college town). Nice quiet/slow place to grow up and be a kid, but as a techy just not enough jobs to stay there sadly.

  9. David says:

By the way, the “Penis of the Prairie” is also used to refer to the Springfield Illinois Hilton. A 37 story hotel in the middle of a town where the next tallest building is like 10 stories…and it’s in the middle of no where (Springfield). It’s ever flared out at the ‘tip’ at the top…just like a..er…hotel.

  10. John,

It was nice meeting you this evening at Crave. I look forward to hearing you speak at the Iowa DTV Symposium Tuesday!

  11. Jeremy says:

Welcome to Iowa, I enjoy your shows and columns. Let me know if you need anything while you are in town.

  12. ChrisMac says:

i look forward to the canned shows

I also grew up in Iowa and though I don’t live there now and haven’t for quite some time, I will always love my home state. The people of Iowa are honest and genuine. And there are many great cultural and educational opportunities in the larger cities. Iowa City is one of the last great bastions of liberality in the Mid-West.

Every time I watch Field of Dreams, which was filmed not far from my home town, I tear up with homesickness.

Thanks for the picture and the flash back!

  14. Half Moon says:

The dome is a tribute to women and the breasts of nourishment which provide life at the beginning of our journey from the darkness of the womb. The duomo is primal and its ubiquity on the most important buildings is testament to man’s committment to women.

  15. GigG says:

If you ever wondered what made Clinton and now Mike Huckabee think they should be President of the USA take a look at the Arkansas capitol building.

  16. Al says:

There should be a pig with a dollar sign on top of the state house.

Soapbox moment: Iowa politicians have largely been bought by agribusiness so hog confinement operations can be allowed to destroy communities, air quality, the water supply in the name of free enterprise.

  18. David says:

#16….here here! True. What was numerous mom & pop small farms has since the 60s become a small number of giant corporate farms which are f**king up Iowa. Especially the ultra large hog lots and their massive ‘waste pools’ (think about it).

And don’t get me started on ethanol.

All states have their political demons (Illinois has the Chicago machine) but Iowa’s is the corporate farming whores.

    1. What vast knowledge do you have that decides what is and is not needed?
    2. What concern is it of yours? A. You aren’t paying the energy bills for it. B. Unless you live in Iowa, neither is your tax money.
    3. Refer to my answer to item 1.

Of course, there you are with your junk science global warming and animal rights bumper stickers and chicken tracks (Peace Signs) all over your oil-smoke spewing ’63 Beetle or other hippy-mobile. There’s a lot of credibility right there, yeah? While you work on that credibility issue, which all Liberals have by default, let’s work on that sentence structure and punctuation, reading this gives me headaches. Of course, your primary problem with Iowa is they currently carry the Republican party and/or are mostly Right Wing, not what their state capitol is made of, right? Now, I’ve got two words for you and they’re not happy birthday, more in the line of Shut Up.

Native Iowan here, farm grown and now living in Des Moines.

John, nice shot of the Capitol. Don’t know if you went inside. There are some nice murals and such. But right now they are finishing some renovations so not the best time to visit.

    1. How about Laws on Current housing and building codes…
    1. Its only for debates and persons getting together to pass LAWS that inflect pain on others..LAWS.
    2. YES it does as MANY location in all the states legislature are BUILT over 100 years ago and have this Monumental ROCK of material that hasnt been updated sence GOD was king.
    2. You PAY for the heating of these buildings, even tho you can have a HOUSE condemed for electrical problems.
Heating air conditioning, smoke ventilation, Fire protection, and many other reasons… We could use SMALLER property and a BETTER building…in MOSt cases.. We dont NEED these folks comfortable…WE dont want them MOSt times anyway…
    3. Keep it up, Clean it up, and turn it into a Museum or 3D theater… THEN it would pay for itself..

yes I have Peace signs, and believe in the ideals…But my 30mpg Oldsmobile(WHITE) thats 20 years old does better then your Beemer..
Animal rights?? i live in the country where we let the cats and dogs ROAM… Keeps the mice and revenours OFF the land. (want some SHINE??)
You should also check into using canuba Wax insted of that OIL based petro product on your car finish and tires.
I forgot something, sence IOWA is a major CORN grower…I think you got enough Shine…As well as adding the import tax($1 per gallon) to Cane based alcohol(25% better then Corn) to “Protect the market”

If you enjoy letting Law makers be comfortable and Pander to them so much, You must make a decent amount of money also… you May even own one of the 30 Slaughter houses in the area(of Iowa).. so you are also adding to the problems these folks are causing to the person that JUST wants to survive on min wage…

#21, poor uninformed #21, you assume so much, but present so little.

    I don’t own a BMW, I own a ’91 Mitsubishi pickup, and that’s all for now.

I don’t live in Iowa, I live in Southern California, one of the most obnoxiously collectovist states in the US, and it stinks. High taxes and no jobs, but by golly we’ve got animal rights, tree huggers and of course, peace.

I don’t drink anything stronger than coffee or drop anything stronger than Benadryl, I should think my grammar would indicate that.

I can’t think of a single tyrant that would not like to rule in peace. But all tyrants hate liberty. But oh well, “Better Red Than Dead”, right? So much for your “Ideals of Peace”.

You say build a whole new building for the politicians? That’s stupid, it’s also a waste of money. Then they’d have two buildings instead of one to heat, cool, light and maintain. Do you see your lack of logic here. Face it, you just want something to bitch about.

    End of argument.
