Fort Huachuca, the nation’s largest intelligence-training center, changed security measures in May after being warned that Islamist terrorists, with the aid of Mexican drug cartels, were planning an attack on the facility. Fort officials changed security measures after sources warned that possibly 60 Afghan and Iraqi terrorists were to be smuggled into the U.S. through underground tunnels with high-powered weapons to attack the Arizona Army base, according to multiple confidential law enforcement documents obtained by The Washington Times.” The Afghanis and Iraqis shaved their beards so as not to appear to be Middle Easterners.” According to the FBI advisory, each Middle Easterner paid Mexican drug lords $20,000 “or the equivalent in weapons” for the cartel’s assistance in smuggling them and their weapons through tunnels along the border into the U.S. The weapons would be sent through tunnels that supposedly ended in Arizona and New Mexico, but the Islamist terrorists would be smuggled through Laredo, Texas, and reclaim the weapons later.[…]A number of the Afghans and Iraqis are already in a safe house in Texas, the FBI advisory said.

I heard this on the radio driving home tonight. As far as I know, no one else has reported it. Is this more Govt. FUD, or the real thing?

  1. JimR says:

Seems to me its time to invade Medico. Is there a statue or something we can pull down? It looks so cool when we do that.

  2. Greg Allen says:

I have to say… I am totally burned-out and skeptical about these supposed planned attacks.

Bush and the right wing media have played that card way too many times.

More often than not — it sounds alarming at first and then is revealed to be some hapless goof ball group or complete hoax but the “threat” is released to serve some political game playing of the administration.

  3. McCullough says:

Maybe we should send them these bumper stickers.

    Be nice

  4. Don says:

It’s true. The tunnels along the border in Arizona were built for drug smuggling and are too narrow for people.

  5. jbellies says:

My early vote is for “Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt”. The possibility of Islamist terrorists tagging along en passant with the 1,000,000 Latinos who sneak into the US every year, has long made a mockery of the tedious checks of all apparently legit travellers at airports, car crossings, ferry crossings, and other conventional points of entry.

The story will probably be an excuse for a bigger arms / surveillance / “security” budget, but here’s a cheaper way to deal with it: offer illegals a prize (say, a green card) if they turn in an Islamist masquerading as a Latino. Who would better be able to distinguish a companero from a terrorista? Even if they speak fluent Spanish, there’s other factors that will give them away.

The exact methodology in the report, with its tunnels, is pretty far-fetched. Maybe they’re hoping that some fools will try it.

  6. andrew says:

It sounds like the plot of Tom Clancy’s book “Teeth of the Tiger”. However in the book it is the Columbian drug cartels that the terrorists make the deal with.

You know these right wing nut jobs love Clancy.

  7. araknd says:

On the one hand it seems far fetched, but I can tell you, living down here near the border in Southern California, it’s not that far fetched. They are routinely finding tunnels crossing over from Tijuana into San Ysidro/Otay Mesa that are purportedly for drugs, but could be used for weapons also. 60 Afghans/Iraqis could easily slip through Laredo or anywhere along the border.

  8. the Three-Headed Cat says:

The source again? Oh, that’s right. That paragon of Pulitzer-winning, hard-hitting journalistic excellence, the Reverend Sun Myung Moon-owned and operated Washington Times.

Shit, that’s good enough for me.

  9. moss says:

Don’t whine too much about the source. The Moonies are smart enough to leave a money-making resource pretty much alone. Ask anyone eating Gortons codfish cakes.

Most of the TIMES military sources are straight Pentagon. Doesn’t mean they ain’t political – just more reliable than the White House.

  10. JimR says:

“A number of the Afghans and Iraqis are already in a safe house in Texas, the FBI advisory said.”

Isn’t a safe house used to protect someone? Battered women go to safe houses (or to the deep fryer, can’t remember which).

  11. Mister Mustard says:

    >>according to multiple confidential law
    >>enforcement documents obtained by The
    >>Washington Times.

There you have it. Right-wing Moonies are the only ones who have been able to obtain these “confidential law enforcement documents”. I imagine they got them from space aliens.

  12. ECA says:

“This is a TEST, only a TEST…If this was otherwise you would be notified and told HOW to kiss your @$$ good by..”

READ the article on site, and LOOK at the RIGHT side…
    Terror, extremism, Scare tactics…

  13. Chris says:

I call GWB war on terror bullshit…. think about how much money these guys make for smuggling drugs….20K per person is shit in a fishbowl for them… Most the Mexican drug lords I know would take the 20K then kill these assholes before smuggling them in…. but then , I don’t know any Mexican drug lords….lol

  14. Named says:

    Here’s how I decipher US news…

IF its a big story, BUT the front page news on all he majors corps is about shopping, Britney Spears, Lindsy Lohan et al. or about some case that happened years ago, it’s true. IF the news is a big storey to this AND it’s covered by the majors, it’s fake.

  15. Greg Allen says:

araknd said, in the one hand it seems far fetched, but I can tell you, living down here near the border in Southern California, it’s not that far fetched. They are routinely finding tunnels…

Do you think a trillion (plus!) dollar fence is going to stop tunnels?

I’ve also lived along that border and walked part of it. I, personally, think this call for a mega-expensive wall along the border has more to do with giving hundreds of billions of dollars to private contractors than it does with actually fixing the illegal immigration problem.

In other words: I think the trillion (plus!) dollars spent on fencing the souther border will just be another boondoggle.

I don’t doubt that it will slow down Mexican immigration from something like the current 60% of illegals to maybe 40%. But as long as illegals can get jobs, this gap will just be filled by the millions of illegals who get here, but not over that border.

  16. Li says:

    FUD

#6 And yet Condi said that no one -ever- thought anyone would fly planes into buildings.

I guess no one in the White House or foggy bottom ever read “Debt of Honor”.

That’s about as believable as this story of mexican drug gangs sparing time to move AQ around and attack the US when they are already in an open war with with the Mexican ‘government’. This is nothing less than attempting to conflate America’s two big wars on nouns; the war on drugs and the war on terror, and get us fighting on another front. Is there no problem these buffoons can’t see to fix with bombs?

  17. Mike says:

    FUD FUD FUD!

  18. bobbo says:

Yes Fud. But even if true in every respect==still FUD. Impeach Bush—just to teach Hilliary a lesson.

  19. MG says:

Why is my distrust for the current Whitehouse such that I immediately think “bogus story to justify draconian border security legislation/action” If they get people to believe it they could start sending Mexican border crossers to Gitmo. What a deterant that would be.

One should not need to be this distrustful of one’s government.

  20. soundwash says:

oh please… this is just another snow job to keep “the terror threat alive” what a perfect story. -using tunnels, that no one can see or easily verify.

if it were true, they could just use ground penetrating radar and drop some bunker busters along the line. case closed.

-also..similar to what someone else said, why the hell would *any* drug cartel bring attention to themselves, let alone the possible wrath of the US military down on them for a mere $20k?? they could make that much in an 8hr period encompassing a 6 block area here in The Bronx.

-like they are going to put a billion dollar operation at risk for $20k..even it if it was $20k a day it wouldn’t be worth it.

this has got to be the dumbest terror-related press release ever.

why the hell are terrorist going to attack a militray base? thats not how you instill “terror” in the hearts of americans..

heck, given the amount of anti-war/anti-military people in the US today.. it would probably backfire and only make that crowd even happier that a military base was attacked.

-also, if the so called attack did go thru, it would allow for complete control of any (dis)information about the attack leaked to the press

i can only see this as prelude to some
new soon-to-be introduced Bill that will further shred our constitution.

it’s sad. while not religious in any way, i was always preferred the ideals of the republican party over the democrats. however, the current party has absolutely nothing to do with the original party ideals. they seem more like ultra elite liberals than anything else..

  21. Joshua says:

The tunnels are real enough. But they usually aren’t in the middle of a desert. The best way for them is to run from a warehouse on the Mexican side to a warehouse on the US side. Thats where most of them have been found.

This story originates with a radio station in Tucson, Az….The Washington Times picked it up from there. It’s being reported by all the wacko sites as gospel, but I can’t find any independent source for the story except the radio station. The station is a bit on the loony tune side anyway.

  22. Hal says:

Give me a break. I was there last month, and security was the same as it’s been for years. Furthermore, There is nothing at Ft. Huachuca worth blowing up anyway. The way that place is spread out all over the desert, it would be hard to find more than 20 people in one place at a time. Pure bull shit.

  23. Don says:

#22, I work there. Security has been increased and has been for several months, but I agree that an attack would be pointless.

  24. ECA says:

these folks are Paranoid ENOUGH, NO MORE DRUGS for them…

    I need to ask…
Is propagation of paranoia, and LIES, terrorism??
CAN we prove these folks or ANYONE is behind this CRAP??
    CAN we SUE THEM???

False reporting, misrepresentation, and making us PARANOID..

  25. Personality says:

Scare tactics to raise the price at the pump.

  26. Ron Larson says:

I agree. No Latin American drug cartel is going to be stupid enough to get in bed with Islamic terrorist. There is no amount of money these terrorist could bring to the table that would make it worth it.

On the other other hand, clueless Islamic terrorist walking around Northern Mexico with a $20k wad of cash is going to get themselves ripped off. Yes, a smuggler will take their money, and perhaps their life too.

  27. Jetfire says:

    FTA ”
However, the sub-source “for this information is of unknown reliability,” the FBI advisory stated.”
So the FBI puts out an advisory like their supposed to unlike info about the 911 highjackers going to school. They even say that it my not be true but we figure we should tell you anyway just in case. Fort officials changed security measures after the advisory but don’t tell you what they are. It may be just changing guard rotation time and some simple procedures in case they were being stacked out and something they should be doing anyway.

Some reporter gets wind of this and writes a story to make it sound more than it is. He needs to get paid.

But this is all GWB fault some how?

  28. Phillep says:

Jim, I suppose your only experience with safe houses is in relationship with battered women?

“Safe house” is just another term for “hide out”. A place to hide.

Gads, someone comes up with /another/ rumor, and all of a sudden it’s a plot by the White House. Check it out and call “bullshit”, or not. But the responses here sure serve as illustrations for “Slander” (which I’m reading now).

  29. Mr. Fusion says:

    #28, Jetfire,

But this is all GWB fault some how?

Because it is on Bush’s watch.

Because Bush is ultimately responsible for the actions of the FBI, military, Homeland Insecurity, and intelligence gathering.

Because Bush and his minions have continually served up a dish of fear for years with little proof whatever of anything actually happening.

Because most people don’t like Bush.

Because although this story may not have originated with Bush, those Right Wing Nut Neo-Con Conservative Evangelical Republican Radio-head Shut-ins that did follow him.

  30. Rtbwa says:

It’s FUD – Considering the report is tying in all those Republican wedge issues (like Mexic…er illegal imigration and the fact that there are terrorists under every bed flinging terror all over the place – I mean A military base in Arizona??!? – OBL aimed at WTC, the Pentigon, the Capital, the White House – so this doesn’t quite fit the real terrorists MO….)
