The car also moved without floorboards, windows, a license plate or driving lights, though the votive candles placed inside the headlights did stay lit, said driver Dean Baldwin – who only received his full license the day before the incident.

  2. Balbas says:

And had it been in the US, the police would order the cameras turned off, the four inside handcuffed, the designer arrested, and a ruthless DA out for blood with the maximum sentence possible so that NO ONE ever tries this again.

  3. ECA says:

    Neet concept…
But there are a few other ideas to try…
could load up a Spring such as our little kids windup cars, and use peddles to keep it wound.

The other is a centrifugal force wheel. It would create the force needed, with LESS peddling. Just a clutch system.

And to add Electrics, 1 Battery, and LEDS..

  4. The Answer says:

Have you never heard of a Surrey? Honestly if your going to be “against the company” and all pro environment, at least make some sense and stop humiliating yourself and the others who do this seriously. You’ve single handedly made a mockery of public civil disobedience. The cop had every right to tow you guys. Anyone could’ve slammed into it. Damn hipsters. Give em a “Get off my Lawn!” for me John

  5. The Answer says:

Don’t get me wrong I applaud them for building the car and such, but keep it out of city traffic.

  6. Richard says:

Well, it’s a non-motorized vehicle that is pedaled powered, and I believe street legal, as long as they obey the rules of the road. Just like a bicycle.

But I agree, if it was the States they would have been arrested, and handcuffed. Then tasered for good measure.

  7. ciaron says:

    Errr… brakes?

  8. I do not see that this is any different than a bike. And there are certain types of bikes with no brakes either. Bikes are also a nuisance on city streets when they want to be. Do they get towed? This needs to be tested in the highest court. And how is it more unsafe than a bike as the cop implies. Get hit on a bike or get hit in the car shell. Which do you prefer?

\first of all it is not a motorized vehicle.

  9. sean says:

I guess the automobile that you license needs to be defined. In USA, if the car is modified enough, it has to be inspected by the DMV… but what if the frame were cut up to make a traditional bicycle?

What if it were cut up to make a 2-seat bicycle?

How about a 2-seat bicycle with a weather shield?

… You see where it’s going. You make a good point, John. At what point is it a car?

Also, in the states, Bicyclists have equal right to the road, but a traditional bicycle would be easier to pass.

  10. GetSmart says:

SUV’s will be too heavy for this modification to work well, ( Not that the one in the video would have won many races ) but my thought with re-purposed SUV’s is that you remove the drivetrain, gut the interior, and they’ll make marvelous mini-apartments for the newly homeless millions when gas hits ten bucks a gallon. And the lovely bonus storage compartments where the engine, gas tank and spare tire used to reside.
The pedal car concept could be scaled up for public transport as well, city buses with a pedal at every seat! Good bye obesity epidemic!
Fred and Barney would be proud!

  11. ECA says:

    10.
You are waiting for $10 a gallon??
Average price to drive to work, EVEN in a good car, NOW, is $4-6 per day, and NO side trips.

  12. Mr. Fusion says:

The cop never did say what was unsafe about it. I have to believe the cop was trying to make a point. Bicycles are very common in Toronto and have as much right to use the road as do automobiles.

  13. Uncle Dave says:

#11: $4-6 per day? Must live a long way from work.

  14. ZZ says:

I was told by the authorities the only way to get around of paying diesel tax is that you don’t have an enigine in your car. Even you install an electric motor the car is still a diesel car. It turns out “motor vehicle” really means that, when u remove the motor it can be a trailer (there are trailers made out of old vans) or a covered bicycle. The less it resembles a car the better, but it’s still a bicycle if it has pedals that make it move.

So, no matter how u twist it, it’s a bicycle, but bicycles have their own set of rules.

I have a http://www.kickbike.com in China and had to explain to the public park guards, it’s not a bicycle (pedal powered). The size of the front wheel wont make it a bicycle. I’m sure their park rules were made to safeguard people from faster moving objects with big front wheels.

  15. Patriot says:

The police complaint was that the thing was unsafe. As opposed to regular cars, that are 100% safe, nobody ever dies in accidents involving complete automobiles. DoucheCop says, “The safety factor is… unsafe.” Typical dumbass cop.

Also, gotta love the 6 Pedal Pigs that show up, obviously called as backup.

Even better – cops says if they get in an accident, he’s “on the line”… umm, why? They voluntarily got in the thing, and it’s not like they’re going to t-bone another vehicle.

I never ceased to be amazed at the below-average intellect of the common police officer.

  16. olskool says:

    when did this take place???

I hate to say it, but the artist’s “creative” idea is old.

Someone already did that down here in Houston back in the mid 1990’s with a classic Beetle.

  17. Peter iNova says:

What part of “motor vehicle” didn’t they get that it was wasn’t a part of?

  18. hhopper says:

“#11: $4-6 per day? Must live a long way from work.”

With the current price of gas ($3.25/gal. in my area) if you have a car that gets 15 mpg, you only have to be 15 miles from work for it to cost you $6.50 for the round trip.

  19. CC Rider says:

    “Don’t Tase me, Bro!”

  20. ECA says:

    13,
consider that it takes MORe gas to start the car then to drive it, for 15 minutes..
1 mile distance in stop and go traffic, wastes MORE gas then driving 70mph on the freeway for the same amount of time.
At $3 per gallon, it will cost you at LEAST 1 gallon of gas to START, to drive on an engine thats NOT warm, to Stop and start at each signal, then to turn off the car at work.
    Then REPEAT back home.

  21. cofc11 says:

this has been done before…but more efficiently in the snowboarding film bikecar. they went through a few states with it.

I was part of another pedal-powered car project- the oxygen fueled car of 2005.

Our project started as a 1989 Honda Civic, and was turned into a five-wheeled tandem bicycle for Savannah, GA’s 2005 International Car Free Day. It had great brakes (the original rear parking brakes with about 1/4 the original weight) and we had no problems with the police. As a pedal-powered vehicle, it needed no title, insurance, or licence plate, but we did need to put money in parking meters, as parking services is an entirely different and more vicious animal in Savannah. It slid in and out of city traffic easily, and would fit in a bike lane and sometimes on sidewalks, where it was allowed to ride regular bikes.

I was also part of another big bike project: the Green Hummer Project of the G8 Summit protests of 2004. It was also a vehicle-sized bike (in this case an H2). Even with the security forces of the G8 we escaped being tasered, and have some nice photos of the Green Hummer with the G8 security forces.
