A federal judge cited benefits for legal workers and little harm for law-abiding employers as he refused to block the Jan. 1 implementation of Arizona’s groundbreaking new law to penalize businesses that knowingly employ illegal immigrants.

U.S. District Judge Neil Wake denied requests for a temporary restraining order or an emergency injunction to block the sanctions law passed by the Arizona Legislature as a response to the influx of illegal immigrants into the state…

Those who would suffer the most from suspending the law would be legal low-skill workers who lose jobs and get depressed wages due to competition from illegal immigrants, according to Wake. “Even if the injunction is lifted later, their loss will never be paid back,” he said…

Under the law, employers who knowingly hire unauthorized workers can face suspensions of their business licenses for up to 10 days. Repeat violators would have their licenses revoked.

It also mandates that employers use a federal computer system to check Social Security numbers of new hires. Use of that system provides employers with a partial legal shield if it turns out that a worker who clears the check is later determined to be unauthorized.

I think we all know that state laws wouldn’t be proposed if the Feds enforced the laws already on the books.

Great posting – I wonder how it got by the Dvorak censors.

Why are mexicans obsessed with “members”?

  4. What never ceases to amaze me is that people whine, bitch and complain against illegal immigrants and yet those who smashed the airplanes into the twin towers were legal + some with German college degrees.

BUT Republicans need a TANGIBLE fear monging scapegoat for the next elections.

  5. comhcinc says:

i think the law should be rougher, fines starting small leading to larger ones and jail time.

  6. jscott says:

Every story keeps bringing up the fact they are illegal but they keep getting rights? If you work over hear that’s fine. Pay taxes get a SS card and become a American. Don’t pretend you are when your not.Oh,and learn some damn english!

  7. George X. Bush says:

Pay no attention to our skilled jobs being offshored to other countries, or that our technological leadership is going in the tank. It is good for our economy, since it helps the stock market and teaching science is expensive. Worry instead about undocumented workers ‘taking’ the lowest wage jobs that we have to offer. After all, American workers are clamoring for my leadership to protect “US Citizen” house painters, gardeners, itinerant crop pickers and food servers, but I don’t hear anyone complaining that Intel is building it’s most advanced factories in China.

  8. bs says:

    Just keep this in mind:

When was the last time you heard ANYONE from the federal government stating ANYTHING about protecting citizens?

Now, when substitute citizens in the previous question with TAXPAYER.

Ahhh.. Now you see. It is not about citizens, it is about tax revenue!

  9. Ranger007 says:

Geez!!!! you guys – Republicans – low wages?! Democrats – votes?!

There isn’t a bit of difference between those power-hungry bastards – yet it is either the Republicans or Democrats!

Illegal is illegal. Racist? give me a break!!

Sending jobs to China worries me. You want to give your kids a leg up for their future – teach them how to say “do you want fries with that?” in Chinese.

Send all of the DC bunch packing, make no distinctions between party lines.

    But won’t happen.

  10. Todd Henkel says:

Taking the low paying jobs is not the issue. These are…

1 – Illegal aliens choose to break a major law as their first act upon arriving. What other laws will they choose to break during their visit? And are we all permitted to commit one felony of our choosing and turn in our “Do Not Go To Jail” card?

2 – Illegal aliens choose to utilize public services (transportation, education, healthcare, etc.) without paying into the system that provides those very services.

3 – The advocates of illegal aliens prefer to force upon this country changes beneficial to them rather than make their home country better.

4 – The concept that the border is so porous easily resonates with many people. Forget the Patriot Act. In addition to illegal immigrants and drug smuggling, it must be easy to drive or walk any number of things that will do material harm to the country.

It is time to get off the fence (pun intended) and either open the doors or enforce the rules. The in between stance is being decisive and expensive.

  11. Bill R. says:

Angel, you missed one thing there. This bill was signed into law by our governor, a Democrat.

  12. Who Leo says:

A police officer told me that they discovered an interesting fact about Mexicans. The harder you hit them, the more English you get out of them.
