Greek Orthodox and Armenian priests attacked each other with brooms and stones inside the Church of the Nativity as long-standing rivalries erupted in violence during holiday cleaning.

The basilica, built over the grotto in Bethlehem where Christians believe Jesus was born, is administered jointly by Roman Catholic, Greek Orthodox and Armenian Apostolic authorities.

Any perceived encroachment on one group’s turf can touch off vicious feuds…

But the clean-up turned ugly after some of the Orthodox faithful stepped inside the Armenian church’s section, touching off a scuffle between about 50 Greek Orthodox and 30 Armenians.

Brotherly love, eh?

Somewhere along the way their religion usrped their faith. Sad really.

I am VERY disappointed there is no video. Please, if anyone has a link to a video…

  3. OhForTheLoveOf says:

Stories like this amuse me to no end… I also would like to see video 🙂

  4. Matt says:

I agree, Rec. The great irony here is that this nonsense happened at a time of “peace on earth, and goodwill toward men.” I hope their bishops gave them a good talking to.

  5. the answer says:

And people wonder why I don’t respect religion anymore

    What would Hey Zeus think?

  7. Kerry says:

These people are really misguided. But if you let the actions of silly people keep you from the truth, why do you rely on yourself and your own wits? Is there something about you that makes you better than they are?

  8. dejavuyou says:

Sounds like gang warfare kind of stuff. Where the hell is the love? peace? understanding? Divine intervention?

I’d like to know if the Greek was sweeping something up and got carried away or something. Or did the Armenian dare the Greek to step over the line.

  9. OhForTheLoveOf says:

#7 – Nothing you wrote makes any sense.

  10. They might fight against each other but the moment they hear there’s going to be a gay pride in Jerusalem, the jews, the christians and the muslim will unite in a joint hatred filled fervor.

It’s as if the only thing that can reunite the 3 flavours of worshipping the same God is hate..

  11. Kerry says:

Sorry, probably didn’t make much sense. I was commenting on how folks tend to pick on the religious. As if there was something that makes us any better or different.

  12. Shadowbird says:

*singing* O Little Town Of Bethlehem, where has the stillness gone? While priests do brawl, the rest of us all wonder just what went wrong…

  13. OhForTheLoveOf says:

#11 – I get what you mean now.

I tend to be one of the local guys who get criticized for attacking religion. And I do. Organized religion, I believe, strives to separate a person from their ability to think for themselves. It creates a mob of ignorance all willing to believe whatever junk is spoon-fed them by their charismatic shepard’s.

As for followers of religion, I believe I am better than the fundamentalists and extremists. I believe everyone who isn’t a fundy is better, theists and atheists alike.

But when you strip away the ultra extreme crowd, there is nothing that makes any one of us better than another, no matter what we believe. We are all people and all deserving of respect.

But keep in mind, many of us aren’t “picking on religion” for sport. It isn’t our afternoon pastime. There are groups of theists (typically conservative) who are attacking us all. They attack the culture of art and literature we hold dear. They attack our educational systems and try to coerce us to spend secular funds on dogmatic theistic classes (like creationism). They encourage the discrimination against and systematic violence toward gays, lesbians, non-theists, medical personnel, librarians and teachers, and others.

I won’t take a live and let live attitude until the piety patrol stops attacking me and others like me.

  15. The Pastor says:

Apparently there weren’t enough boys to go around.

  16. Kerry says:

    I hear you.

I am a “fundy” as you call it, but I don’t term myself religious – I loosely define religion is a repetitive action for the sake of what that action will get you. If it’s worship, then the religious believe that it’s the worship that will get them salvation. I don’t agree with that at all. It’s your heart – do you/can you honestly “love your brother as yourself” and acknowledge your own limitations? I see myself not better than anyone else because we were all planned for and created equally, and compared to Him, well, we’re pretty helpless. But I’m not here to preach, just setting the context for my own remarks (this is so late in the game I doubt it will get read anyway).

I do find it interesting that it is okay for you to pick on or defend yourself against those who “attack the culture of art and literature we hold dear”. Exactly what is it that the faithful are defending? This just turns into a cycle that will repeat itself endlessly.

Sometimes, it’s better to just hold your tongue and let the fools do what they do best – make fools of themselves. They don’t need our help to do that, whatever side of the faith coin we choose to be on.
