Religious broadcaster Pat Robertson said Wednesday that 2008 will be a year of violence worldwide and a recession in the United States, followed by a major stock-market crash by 2010…

That took a lot of insight.

Robertson also noted that one especially horrible prediction he made last year — that a terrorist act, possibly involving a nuclear weapon, would result in a mass killing in the United States — did not come to pass.

“All I can think is that somehow the people of God prayed and God in his mercy spared us,” Robertson said.

This man has the credibility of a former Nixon henchman.

I predict that Pat Robinson will be wrong again in his predictions.

  2. Gary, the dangerous infidel says:

I never get tired of pointing out that crazy people like Robertson often feel right at home in the comforting bosom of the Republican party. Home, sweet home.

And on a day when Iowa and its political process is at the center of the universe, it seems uniquely appropriate to say that Robertson can suck my caucus 😉

  3. Nate says:

““All I can think is that somehow the people of God prayed and God in his mercy spared us”

I can think of another reason…

  4. Greg Allen says:

I’m a Christian who prays often, but I have serious problems with Pat Robertson’s theology of prayer. Robertson’s view on prayer is a common one but falls apart if you think much about it:

If we Christian’s prayers STOPPED a terrorist attack in 2007, were we SLACKING OFF in our prayers before the 911 attack? This is the logic of a spiritual simpleton.

I, myself, pray to become closer with God and as a form of meditation — it’s not an attempt to control God or manipulate world events.

  5. JPV says:

Robertson, along with all other Christians, needs to be shot.

    What are you, a Muslim?

  7. Jim W. says:

Nate said, I can think of another reason…

    Water boarding terrorists?

    The Patriot Act?

    CIA wiretaps?

  8. ArianeB says:

Umm. Didn’t Pat Robertson predict the Rapture would happen in 2007?

If he did, the rapture took a lot fewer people than he thought it would.

  9. Dallas says:

I prayed that no Martians would attack us in 2007. It worked.

You can thank me. Now would be good.

  10. Gary, the dangerous infidel says:

I guess performing dangerous stunts on deserted roads has lost its thrill. Sometimes you’ve got to just get out there and endanger other lives to make it really pop.

  11. Gary, the dangerous infidel says:

Oops — that was my motorcycle video comment. I’m losin’ it!

JPL advocates the genocide of people based on their faith. You just have to love the tolerance of those on the left.

  14. prophet says:

What he failed, and was in fact was loath to point out, was that it was all the Jedis from England and the Pastafarians (loyal servants of the Flying Spaghetti Monster) whose prayers actually worked.

Christians, Muslims, LDS, Buddhists, etc… no luck.

  15. JohnS says:

Gee I heard the same thing on market watch. I guess God watches the same channel. No sense going out on a limb Pat.

  16. OhForTheLoveOf says:

#12 – JPL advocates the genocide of people based on their faith. You just have to love the tolerance of those on the left.

JPL is an asshat. “The left” does not advocate the genocide of people based on faith. Like the general population, the majority of “the left” are people of faith.

But if you want to know who advocates genocide for religious people you only need to ask yourself which side of spectrum is waging a Christian Jihad in Iraq.

which would mean that ol’ Pat is on god’s shit list………..

  19. Greg Allen says:

    # 5 JPV said, Robertson, along with all other Christians, needs to be shot.

You remind me of that bumper sticker: “Shoot the extremists.”

I’m a Christian and I’m law abiding, tolerant, non-violent, and tax paying — just like millions of other liberal and moderate Christians who make-up mainstream Christianity in America.

FURTHERMORE, I certainly wouldn’t advocate that YOU be shot. So who is more enlightened — you or me?

  20. fistofanangrygod says:

“But a prophet who presumes to speak in my name anything I have not commanded him to say, or a prophet who speaks in the name of other gods, must be put to death.”

“You may say to yourselves, ‘How can we know when a message has not been spoken by the Lord?’ If what a prophet proclaims in the name of the Lord does not take place or come true, that is a message the Lord has not spoken. That prophet has spoken presumptuously. Do not be afraid of him” (Deuteronomy 18:20-22 NIV).

Anybody got a brick i feel an old testament Ass whipping coming on.

I’m one of those liberal Christians — and there are millions upon millions like me.

It seems like Christian bashers are in cahoots with the Religious Right in their refusal to acknowledge that we exist.

It serves both groups purposes to let right wing wackos define American Christianity.

  22. Jägermeister says:

    #21 – Greg Allen

I guess people are just fed up with so many years of right-wing Christian assholes pushing their agenda in the public arena.

  23. TIHZ_HO says:

When people in China ask me what’s it like in the US with democracy and religious freedom I really don’t know how to answer that with public figures such as Pat Robertson and Huckabee…

Don’t be so quick to wave the finger at other countries when there is so much to attend to in the US.

If the US is happy about religion and politics mixed together then there cannot be any problem with other countries where this exists such as Iran.

    Right? 😉

    Cheers

  24. Jägermeister says:

#23 – TIHZ_HO – If the US is happy about religion and politics mixed together then there cannot be any problem with other countries where this exists such as Iran.

The issue that the U.S. (at least from a right-wing Christian perspective) has with Iran is that it’s run by fundamentalist Muslims, not fundamentalist Christians or Jews.

  25. Mister Catshit says:

What a quack I am tired of these people claiming that GOD speaks directly to them any body who knows the Bible knows that violence and chaos will continue until JESUS returns and of course the rest of his so called predictions that aren’t based on the Bible never come true how hard was it to predict a 50 50 shot at who would be president these so called Christian leaders only hurt us with their nonsense GOD speaks to all of us through his word the Bible and in it he tells us that there will be prophets in the last days and how to determine the real ones from the false ones of satan he said listen to what they say if it comes to pass it is of GOD if it doesn’t it is not you don’t get a second chance Mr. Robertson GOD does not give false information and he obviously doesn’t speak to you.

Enlightenment aside, it does make you a law abiding, tolerant, non-violent, and tax paying individual that fed an obviously sad little troll-boy. Thanks for the former, at least.

I think I need to start a “adopt a troll foundation” or something. Send them copies of “The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Grammar and Style,” “How to Win Friends and Influence People,” and “Asshole no More.” Hmm. That could be a fun video! New project! Woo.

The best part about the serendipitous comment? I had a rather humorous visual of P-Rob doing crazy motorcycle stunts!
