My wife and I went to Orlando for a few days after Xmas and stayed in a very upscale four star hotel. I had seen this report before I left and the first thing I did after checking in was inspect the glasses in the room. They had finger prints and lip prints on them and obviously had only been rinsed out. This is a widespread problem in this country with all the legal and illegal Hispanic hotel maids. I guess they were raised to different standards in their country.

I’ve stayed in many hotels over the years, and only recently, with the huge influx of Hispanics in Florida, have I run into dirty glasses and bathrooms in quality hotels. I can’t believe that it’s the management that comes up with the idea of having the maids rinse out the glasses in the rooms instead of replacing them with clean glasses that have been sterilized to save money. Give me a break. I’m just reporting what I see personally. It probably has nothing to do with a particular race, it’s just the attitude of people who work in the lowest jobs in our society. I think alobos hit the nail on the head in comment #18 though.

HORSE HOCKEY! It’s likely got more to do with the bottom line of the hotel than it does the maid staff. Even IF it were the staff, then it should be the MANAGEMENT’s responsability to ensure that the staff are performing their duties properly.

I spent nearly 30 years training more than a thousand people for low wage jobs in the service industry. It is an absolute fact that first generation immigrants tend to work harder at those types of jobs than all but the slightest few of the workers who are born here. I spent the years working side by side with them, I know.
You want to blame it on the laziness and ignorance of a minimum wage worker. Since it is quicker and easier to replace the glass with a clean one from the cart, why would the lazy worker take the time and effort to wash them herself? You probably figure that she happily does the dishwasher’s job because she’s poor and non-white, so obviously she’s sleeping around with the whole kitchen crew. Maybe she’s screwing the company bean-counter. After all, washing the glasses by hand in the room is saving the hotel money.

Oh fuck off. One look at the wonderful, highly productive, technically advanced society in Mexico tells you what you need to know. Things there are the way they have been for a long, long time. Injustice, corruption, poverty, superstition, violence – all things endemic to Mexican culture, and not imposed upon it from without. Those things are part of the culture, and have been, and will continue to be, and not because of evil cultural imperialists and so-called ‘racists.’
The habits, the mindset, the values are all passed from generation to generation, with little change and little progress. This is because Mexican culture – like ALL backwards peasant cultures, is made up principally of people whose average level of intelligence is below that needed to recognize that their culture has serious problems and needs to change.
Peasants from Mexico, Serbia, India, China, Malaysia, Zimbabwe, Ecuador – they all have the same thing in common. They all believe, against all the evidence, that their culture is the best. This is called ‘ethnocentrism’. It is a barrier to progress. They do not accept change. They keep doing things ‘the way we’ve always done them’ because it must be the best way, since that’s the way it’s always been done. Such circular ‘reasoning’ is behind many dysfunctional traditions.
White, educated liberals of European extraction are the only significant ‘culture’ that does not tell it’s people that IT IS THE BEST. Ask a Mexican peasant, who has seen the significant differences in the standards of living in Mexico and the US, which culture is better and they will invariably, despite the glaringly obvious inferiority of it, say that Mexican culture is better. More poverty, more disease, more violence, universal corruption in institutions, injustice and unfairness everywhere you look – but none of that outweighs the simplistic, atavistic group identity and group pride which advanced, successful, progressive societies put aside in order to make real world improvements in the way people actually live.
Whether it’s Afghan peasants growing poppies that wind up financing al Qaeda or Mexicans who continue to accept politicians who are bought by those with money, it’s the same everywhere at all times.
Peasants are stupid. That’s why they stay peasants. That’s why, despite all the help, all the good intentions, they continue to live substandard lives. Reality says that a major portion of the human species will always be like this. We cannot ‘lift everyone out of poverty’ any more than ‘all the children of Lake Wobegon’ can possibly be ‘above average.’

Mexicans in general work hard. And they do as they are instructed. But they also steal more from their employers, because theft is not universally rejected in Mexican culture as it is in ours. The ‘important’ people give the orders, and you follow the orders of your ‘betters’ no matter what. That’s what centuries of living in a rigidly enforced caste system does to a culture. Abstract concepts like ‘justice’ and ‘fairness’ take a back seat to the necessities of day-to-day survival. You follow the jefé ‘s orders, because if you don’t, you will be punished. For the same reason, you don’t change what you’re doing, even if you know it’s wrong, because individual initiative is punished, not rewarded. If the people you work for are successful, and have a lot of nice things, it’s OK to take some of them, since they have them and you don’t – and they won’t miss them. That works in Mexico, where the employer and the employee both accept this as a given. The employer knows the help will steal, and they allow for it – the employee knows that the employer knows, too – and that they simply mustn’t take too much. When these same people go to work for Americans, a cultural clash is set up; the Mexican worker does not understand why the American boss goes to such extremes to prevent them from taking anything. Instead of intelligently understanding that this is a cultural difference in customs, the Mexican resents being treated like a thief – the American has their prejudice confirmed that Mexicans are “less honest,” not grasping that their respective views of what constitutes “honesty” are different.

Chinese people do not have the concept of washing hands after doing their business. It is unlikely to find soap in any lavatory or even means of drying your hands and perhaps worse – toilet paper, if your lucky there is some old newspaper scraps.
This is the culture as hhopper and 3HC have asserted is the only problem with low standards of hygiene in hotels.
However I have not seen any western foreigners cleaning lavatories in any of the better hotels and restaurants & bars here in Shanghai and they are clean and nice smelling. WTF? How is this possible? Management, training and supervision!
Another example: Indonesia also has a more peasant general population. However I have never ever been to a lavatory in Indonesia that was not clean, had soap, hand towels or air dryer. I believe it is because they traditionally eat with their hands.
Management, training and supervision! goes for any work / task that anyone does.

My last trip to the US last year I stayed in around in Chicago, Madison, Denver, Twin Cities MN, Rapid City SD and most was by car.
We do not stay at the cheap hotels and half of hotels where we stayed were sub-standard to what we got in Brazil (Sao Paulo)where we just came from and in China! WTF? Paying $150+ a night and getting worn out crap. My comment to my wife then was GOUSA is going down the tubes…

The first room I rented was 11 bucks an hour -The Bridge Motel, Rt. 73 Palmyra NJ. The most recent was the $150 a night -The Hyatt Century Plaza, Century City Ca. In both places I assumed the previous occupants had been fucking like the animals we are and that the maids in charge of cleaning up the room were probably less than thorough. I guess everyone wants to feel like the room they’ve rented measures up to a high hygienic standard, but common sense should remind you to rinse the water glass in case it’s dirty.

China WAS far worse than what ever Latin America could only hope to be. China was a ‘country in a bottle’ isolated from exposure to the west until only recently.
The difference, and the fact you overlooked, is it was USA and European investment along with its management styles into China on such a large scale never seen in Latin America which made all the difference in the world. (Not all investments were successful – more on that later)

I first came to China in 1993 to establish and run a new factory. I learned the hard way that management, training and supervision is the only way to have success.
The fact that you are overlooking (or it is not evident to either of you) that good solid Management is vitally important tells me that you both are out of your depth.
Without proper good management everything else falls apart as management sets the quality standard and more important the company’s vision and mission. It cannot be any other way – period.
What both of you seemed to be engaged about is what we already know; Latin American management lacks quality standards, vision and mission, same as traditional Chinese management. So training and supervision and therefore quality fails. So what is so Earth shattering here?

Many in this forum seem to be mixing up culture with economy. It is true that the US has historically maintained a better economy than the rest of the countries in our hemisphere. How on earth do you measure the worth of a culture? Do you measure it by standard of living? If so, then Norway, Sweden, Canada, Belgium and Australia all have better cultures that the US. Maybe you want to measure it by academic scores, that would mean that Singapore has the best culture. Want to measure it by morals? The US has more criminals per capita than any other industrialized country. Maybe you would rather measure from the other end of the moral yardstick, and do your judging by which culture has the highest per capita of regular church goers. While I haven’t found a good source for these numbers, you can bet it’s not the US. I’d venture to guess that several middle eastern countries have larger per capita numbers of regular church goers. Just for argument, let’s say that the value of a culture is directly proportionate to the GDP of the country that the culture is located. That way we might be able to put the USA at the top of the heap, at least for today. Look at the numbers, it won’t be long before our GDP is eclipsed by China. Does that mean China will soon have the best culture? Before you go spouting off about which culture is best or worst, and site evidence, let us in on what evidence it is that you are sighting.

Here’s capitalism for you: maxing the profits by lowering the cost of operation while maximizing the price. It works as long as the customer doesn’t notice that the service was cheap.
My tip would be: never stay at the hotel that you own stock in, because your interest as a shareholder is different from your interest as a customer.

Have you ever experienced China? If you’re in the mood to see overworked, underpaid, couldn’t give a rip housekeeping at any hotel 1-5 stars, have a trip to Beijing for the olympics. Good luck getting more than a gallon of hot water in your 2 square foot moldy, dead roach covered shower, lit by a flickering 10-watt flourescent bulb. Thats 3 stars! BTW Don’t breathe, China is one big poisonous cloud of leaded mercury smoke. Skies are pink from it in half the cities I’ve been to. The others are blueish-brown. Not the nice sky blue but diesel smoke blue.
Oh yeah, the comment made about serving gristle and fat, is a real food here. I’ve seen Chinese gobble it down joyfully. I saw the mayor’s daughter of eat mouthfuls of 2 inch thick chewy pig blubber. You blink but it doesn’t go away. You’ll be vegetarian fast.
BTW, comment about bribes… That was so dumb. So may white cops back in the states are slimier than the gristle in my Chinese ‘shi fan’
