CHICAGO (AP) – At least one in four teenage girls nationwide has a sexually transmitted disease, or more than 3 million teens, according to the first study of its kind in this age group.

A virus that causes cervical cancer is by far the most common sexually transmitted infection in teen girls aged 14 to 19, while the highest overall prevalence is among black girls—nearly half the blacks studied had at least one STD.

That rate compared with 20 percent among both whites and Mexican-American teens, the study from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found. About half of the girls acknowledged ever having sex; among them, the rate was 40 percent. While some teens define sex as only intercourse, other types of intimate behavior including oral sex can spread some infections.

For many, the numbers likely seem “overwhelming because you’re talking about nearly half of the sexually experienced teens at any one time having evidence of an STD,” said Dr. Margaret Blythe, an adolescent medicine specialist at Indiana University School of Medicine and head of the American Academy of Pediatrics’ committee on adolescence. Dr. John Douglas, director of the CDC’s division of STD prevention, said the results are the first to examine the combined national prevalence of common sexually transmitted diseases among adolescent girls. He said the data, from 2003-04, likely reflect current rates of infection. The study by CDC researcher Dr. Sara Forhan is an analysis of nationally representative data on 838 girls who participated in a government health survey.

This seems like an extremely high number to me, I wonder what the numbers were like from the late 60’s compared to today. And, what about the “studs”?

  1. ZenPirate says:

I guess this shows how good an idea it was to remove sex ed from schools…

  2. rosebush says:

Bullshit. This is just a ploy to push mandatory vaccines for cervical cancer.

  3. patrick says:

#1 Actually, when I was growing up there was no sex ed in schools, nor was there 20 years before that, etc., etc. Funny, there wasn’t this problem back then…

Don’t ever take a job where data evaluation is critical.

  4. NappyHeadedHo says:

    I like those odds!

  5. j says:

    #3 patrick

“Funny, there wasn’t this problem back then”

LOL That’s because people didn’t talk about it. It was there you just didn’t hear about it.

  6. Wild Bill Clinton says:

    Don’t look at me?

  7. julieb says:

This is a result of abstinence only preaching.

We all know some teens are going to do it. How about we simply give them the facts about the effectiveness of condoms?

The reconstuctionists hate America and want to see it destroyed and replaced with a theocracy.

  8. ECA says:

    HOLD it…

    Girls Girls Girls…
What happened to the GUYS?? Unless this is a world of Lesbians…Those numbers ALSO have to be representative of BOYS..

    ANOTHER POINT…
considering that AT BIRTH, a child has a .004 chance of carrying an STD from its MOTHER. Kids should be ALMOST CLEAN.. So, WHO is the ADULT that STIRRED the POT, DID the No-NO, and so forth, and GAVE the kid an STD.

  9. Daniel says:

This number seems very high. I wonder where they got the participants of the study from. They only talk about the # of girls surveyed. Statistics can be manipulated as most of us know. I would assume that these results came from actual tested results… i.e., they had a reason to go get tested in the first place… which would prove higher results.

  10. the answer says:

1 in 4 sounds ridiculous. I am calling shenanigans on this one as well. Man John I know you get no spam, but how about no B.S. stories? Your my boy, but still

  11. Gary, the dangerous infidel says:

My nominations for possible scapegoat are:

    1) rampant internet pornography
    2) epidemic levels of drug use
    3) evolution taught in public schools
    4) Paris Hilton was in the study sample

  12. ECA says:

I dont think the numbers are off, by much..
I live in a town of 2600 people..
I was aghast to hear that 1/3 of the teens had an STD..

Who remembers the OLD days of the FREE clinics that were ALL OVER THE PLACE… After WWII.
    Do you wonder WHY??
Sailors and military taking a DAY OFF, hitting Japan, and other locations to have a DAY OFF.
They come home and SPREAD what they Gathered, from OTHER PORTS.

  13. Matt Garrett says:

From the liberals who replaced school prayer with sex education, we give you a hardy job well done.

    Rolls Eyes.

  14. #13 – Matt,

Um… things were fine in those years, that was the 70s. Now we’ve gone the other way. I think it’s more likely from abstinence only education and lack of condom distribution.

  15. Gary, the dangerous infidel says:

#13 Matt, since you brought it up, what would be your idea of the proper prayer for all children of every faith to recite at the beginning of a school day in America? I’m giving you carte blanche to write the perfect school prayer, Matt.

  16. gquaglia says:

while the highest overall prevalence is among black girls—nearly half the blacks studied had at least one STD.

Seems right and is right in line with the high number of teen pregnancies among blacks. Translation, unprotected sex and lots of it.

  17. BillM says:

    #15

“Dear God, please make the itching and burning go away! Amen”

  18. Pharaoh90 says:

That’s it! No more teen girls for me. They are all durty. Wait, where did they get it from?

  19. Gary, the dangerous infidel says:

#17 Double Har. Everyone knows you have to rub the afflicted area with a rosary.

  20. MikeN says:

Condoms aren’t very effective against HPV.

  21. Bill Clinton says:

This is just more of a reason for girls to turn to lesbianism to protect themselves. I’ll make sure they learn how to become a proper lesbian. Hillary will submit legislation and appoint me to be the Lesbian Czar.

  22. gregallen says:

    >> # 11 Gary, the dangerous infidel

I’m surprised you didn’t add abstinence only programs to your list.

Aren’t they proven to both increase sexual activity while contributing to ignorance about such behavior?

  23. Seth says:

Hmm, maybe that’s why so many politicians are into little boys. The girls are just too infested with crap.

OK, probably not but I was bored and wanted to post.

  24. Gary, the dangerous infidel says:

#23 Greg, abstinence-only programs have a proper place on the real list, not on my fun scapegoat list 😉

  25. gregallen says:

    Gary,

I probably should have done a nod to the fact that you were kidding. I think it was obvious enough.

While I doubt that most teen girls are very attracted to pornography — I would put popular media on the “real” list. As a general rule, popular media does a very poor job of realistically portraying the downsides of casual sex.

  26. dvdchris says:

“Mary Brown? Sit down, Mary Brown. Tell me, how did a young girl, like YOU come to contract…a SOCIAL disease?”

  27. SJP says:

#3 That’s because daddy always wore a condom.

  28. Gary, the dangerous infidel says:

#26 Greg, I seriously agree. I’m not sure we can expect much better, though, because in the end, popular media is a highly competitive commercial environment. The standard rules of free market capitalism apply. He/she who attracts the most eyeballs gets the most money, and money makes the world go ’round.

Morality lessons need to be taught in a noncommercial environment by people who care enough to make a long-term investment of quality time, and where the audience is captive. Geez, nothing like that really comes to mind…

  29. SJP says:

    dangerous = hazardous
    infidel = one without faith

The Hazardous One Without Faith believes morality lessons need to be taught in a noncommercial environment. WTF!!!

    Although, I do agree;-)
