EETimes.com – Intel’s Barrett berates U.S government policies — In light of the $700 billion bailout of the bumblers, this tirade is a winner.

Shazam! Innovation vanished!

The U.S. is throwing its future down the drain. That was one of the startling statements from Craig Barrett, Intel chairman, in an interview with Business Week magazine.

During this week’s interview, Barrett vented his anger and frustration over Washington’s inability to solve America’s long-term problems, and was notably concerned that the government had failed to pass a bill that would offer its corporations and academic institutions $1.2 billion for R&D projects.
He complained about the administration’s continuing focus on short-termism, noting the “focus is on today’s problems and forget about tomorrow’s problems. You can’t save your way out of a recession. Expect to see continued research and development investment streams. If you stop the investment streams you are cutting your throat.”

Barrett suggested the government is “effectively thumbing their nose at out expert opinion” when it comes to how the U.S high tech sector should remain competitive.

“When you look at the agricultural subsidies and the bailouts and the earmarks it is hard to believe the government can’t come up with $1 billion to fund innovation. We as a country have chosen not to compete.”

He added one of the positives of this slowdown is that Intel has become much more geographically diversified than in the past. “Between 75 to 80 percent our business comes from outside the U.S. We are a bit more shielded. A big part of the world is still investing in infrastructure, China, Russia and India. Those regions are seeing good growth rates.”

Barrett also took a swipe at what he said was the U.S “abdicating our leadership in finance and accounting to the Europeans. We are not competing on K-12 education. We are not competing on basic research. We have no immigration policy. High corporate tax rates dictate a lower rate of investment.”

He noted that nearly two-thirds of graduate students in engineering are from overseas. “We pay for their education but then we send them home. There, they either compete with us or take a job away. We have killed investment banking, and now we are killing engineering.”

Um…careful there, Mr. Barrett. You could be getting a call from the DOJ if you continue. And what would Intel know about competition? Apparently, a lot. I remember working for a top 10 PC manufacturer in the early 90s and being told by Intel to “drop the AMD chip or no 486 processors.”

    Nice.

  2. JimD says:

Killing Engineering ? That was KILLED OFF LONG AGO !!! Corporations run by LAWYERS AND ACCOUNTANTS KILLED OFF R&D BUDGETS LONG AGO TO PUMP UP THE BOTTOM LINE !!! And it had NOTHING TO DO WITH THE GOVERNMENT, BUT HAD EVERYTING TO DO WITH OBEYING WALL STREET !!! And I can’t understand why the BIGGEST, BADDEST, CPU-MONOPOLIST IS WHINING TO THE GOVERNMENT FOR A HANDOUT !!! Oh, that’s what Corporate CEOs do, while telling workers to “Shut Up and TOUGH OUT THE LAYOFFS” !!!

  3. MikeN says:

    Yeah, more corporate welfare.

  4. mike says:

I agree 100% JimD, but now all sectors want handouts just like the big bank/stockbroker/insurance corporations are getting.

  5. Dave W says:

    What #3 said.

  6. JimD says:

#4 Mike, well see the Lead Story now – on BANKRUPTCY !!! Tough Medicine, but the “Invisible Hand” will do its work, we hope !!! On the other hand, if there is to be a “Bailout”, we should consider giving each of the 300 million Ameicans one 300 millionth share of the proposed 700 billion or 700 billion / 300 million = 2 333.33333 dollars (Thanks, Google for the math !) to simply spend. As most people are living from paycheck to paycheck, the will HAVE TO SPEND THE MONEY, and that will certainly PUMP UP BOTH THE ECONOMY AND TAX REVENUES, AND PRESTO CHANGEO ! NO MORE RECESSION !!!

  7. dave says:

Wow. Great comments. Barrett had too many at the bar it seems. I agree with JimD that putting money into consumer’s hands would do far more to pump up the economy and housing sales than giving it to the fat cats.

  8. Vlad says:

What #6 said. I’d like to see that implemented for everyone with taxable income less then $200,000… Watch what happens 🙂

  9. ECA says:

    So,
the Gov is TAKING our money, and giving it to??
Corps for R&D and schools for foreign aid??
So, the CORPS arent fronting the money to the SCHOOLS to make MORE engineers?? As some of them USED to do.. It made a GOOD tax write off.

Tech schools and Technical UNIONS used to TEACH this stuff, on a 5-7 year course, then you left as a MASTER/journeyman, as you had ON THE JOB training..and were paid almost nothing, but your education was almost FREE.

  10. wumpus says:

Boo frickin’ hoo! “I can’t get Big Brother to fork over ‘taxpayer’ money to fund EE / CS research so I can rape … whoops, I mean reap the financial benefits from innovation”. How about you shut your yap and hire some EE / CS PhD’s to do your blinking research? I guess that would be too logical.

  11. JimD says:

#10 wumpus, I have to agree, the Tech Sector could hire any number of Americans with advanced degrees, but they DON’T WANT TO PAY THE FREIGHT !!! They would rather WHINE TO THE GOVRENMENT, AND TRY TO GET MORE “HARDSHIP” VISA FOR ***CHEAPER FORIEGN TECH WORKERS*** !!! It’s all about KEEPING THE MONEY IN THE CEOs POCKET !!!
