As international aid agencies rush food, water and medicine to Haiti’s earthquake victims, a U.S. faith-based group is sending Bibles to Haitians in their hour of need.

Not any Bible. These are solar-powered audible Bibles that can broadcast the holy scriptures in Haitian Creole to 300 people at a time.

Called the “Proclaimer,” the audio Bible delivers “digital quality” and is designed for “poor and illiterate people,” the Faith Comes By Hearing group said. It added 600 of the devices were already on their way to Haiti.

The Albuquerque-based organization said it was responding to the Haitian crisis by “providing faith, hope and love through God’s Word in audio.”

Providing sectarian evangelism to a people struggling through enormous natural disaster – is not civilized disaster aid.

8 cents per person for the 1.5 million homeless from these world-renowned atheist groups can only be described as a blessed miracle.

  3. fpp2002 says:

#62, RBG wow, a sample of one, congratulations.

BTW, complaining about atheists doesn’t make your imaginary friend in the sky any more real or proven.

  4. Gary, the dangerous infidel says:

By the way, solar-powered Bibles are just half of the special day/night religion package designed for this mission. A glow-in-the-dark cross is also supposed to be included, capable of warding off evil spirits at night. The Haitians need the full double-dose to help build their faith in such trying times.

  5. deowll says:

I think the objects being sent were overkill but most Haitians would have liked a testament along with their tarp and a ration of food.

For the secular minded they would come in handy for rolling your own and starting fires. For the religious they give comfort. Most Haitians are religious. They aren’t wealthy enough to have the delusion they run the universe.

  6. brm says:

    #49 fp2002:

“Is that the best argument you’ve got? That bibles are OK because they aren’t propaganda?”

    No.

The argument is that the bibles are OK because Haitians are overwhelmingly Christian, and they’d probably like to read the bible right now.

And I can’t believe you compared Nazism to Christianity.

    You’re a fool.

  7. Mr. Fusion says:

If they sent some Flying Spaghetti Monster then they could have their religion and eat it too. A nice Chianti or Root Beer would be a nice touch.

    *

Really though, if your god runs the show then he either caused or allowed the earthquake to happen. No free will here as you can’t enact free will when you have no idea what is happening.

I find it the height of hypocrisy that outsiders want to feed such bullcrap to people that lost what little they ever had.

  8. fpp2002 says:

#66, BRM, you were claiming the bible isn’t propaganda because the followers are already sheep. That doesn’t matter, the bible is still propaganda. It’s in the definition: “the spreading of ideas, information, or rumor for the purpose of helping or injuring an institution, a cause, or a person”. So please tell me how the bible does NOT fit this description.

And you can continue with your personal attacks, which don’t bother me in the slightest and only weaken your stance, or you can give more well thought out arguments to the debate. Also? I didn’t compare Nazism to Christianity, I compared the propaganda used by the Nazis to the propaganda used by Christians. Not the same thing, although now that you mention it, there are many similarities. Only there is some proof that Hitler at least existed.

randi.org: “The JREF, in association with the Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason and Science and other secular and skeptic organizations, is soliciting your help.”

skeptic.com: “The Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason and Science (RDFRS) has set up a dedicated bank account and PayPal facility to collect donations”
    or for
The Center For Inquiry’s SHARE,and they ain’t revealing anything.

I think that covers a good percentage of your examples, since that’s all of them.

#69, you did your homework! At least that’s better than whatzisname. Thanks for proving my point.

    E-Tard strikes again!

  12. srgothard says:

When disaster strikes, we remember that life is fragile and to be ready for death. That’s why people turn to the Bible when these things happen. As Luke 13:1-5 points out, disasters can happen to anyone.

No one died in that horrific earthquake that wouldn’t have eventually died; they just died sooner than expected. All of us need to remember that life is short and to turn to God. Bibles are the one things that make eternal differences in people’s lives. Feed them, help them, treat them, but then give them the information to be ready if they don’t live through the next calamity.

  13. natefrog says:

“No one died in that horrific earthquake that wouldn’t have eventually died”

By that logic, life isn’t worth living and we all should just off ourselves right now.

  14. Gary, the dangerous infidel says:

Obviously, a repeat of the well-known “loaves and fishes” miracle would be nice, but as time goes by, I think we’ll see that the miracle of the solar-powered talking Bibles will rank almost as high.

“What’s that sound? Is that the voice of God?”

  15. natefrog says:

#74: I’m betting the tiny speaker on the “Proclaimer” doesn’t have near the bass response required for His glory.

  16. Who says:

#75 – So true! It does come with a removable panel on the bottom that you can pass around like a plate.

  17. The0ne says:

    Bejamin,

You’re not going to convince anyone here of the Bible thing. Never going to happen.

But as I stated in my first post, if it helps a person stay alive longer without food, water, cleanliness UNTIL help comes along then I say hell send them!

The best thing you can do is imagine the person whom you are having the discussion with here in the same position as that old man but only without a Bible to keep him going. Yea, that’s a good day alright don’t you think 🙂

  18. Gary, the dangerous infidel says:

#75 natefrog, since your link made it so accessible, I took a look at the troubleshooting tips for the Proclaimer. Much to my surprise, not a single one of the commonly encountered problems with the device is corrected with prayer. Even God seems to be outsourcing his customer service, probably to a company in New Delhi.

  19. Mr. Fusion says:

What all the Jesus Freaks don’t understand is god has a plan. Praying that he change his plan is so annoying. If god didn’t want it to happen in the first place, it wouldn’t have happened.

Oh yea, you know that part of the bible where they talk about heaven. ha, ha, they were just kidding.

  20. dvdchris says:

The gun is good. The penis is evil. The penis shoots seeds, and makes new life to poison the Earth with a plague of men, as once it was, but the gun shoots death, and purifies the Earth of the filth of brutals. Go forth . . . and kill!

  21. Max Exter says:

So let me get this straight. We can’t put enough food and medical supplies to keep people alive, and this group is using valuable space on electronic bibles?

They are welcome to send these things, but they should have to wait until the physical essentials are no longer in competition for cargo space.

    – me –

  22. RBG says:

Sounds like they’ve got their act together.

“We already have 600 Proclaimers on their way through our ministry partner, Convoy of Hope,” said Jon Wilke, Faith Comes By Hearing’s spokesperson.”

Convoy of Hope is committed to eliminating as much death and despair as it can in Haiti. With your help we’ve already distributed more than 350,000 meals”

“Our warehouse in Haiti had just been restocked with food and supplies before the earthquake,” says Donaldson. “That allowed us to begin meeting needs in Haiti immediately…”

Convoy of Hope has 1 million pounds of food and supplies currently headed to Haiti.”

  23. Mariano says:

The audio Bibles are a blessing.

FYI: I wrote a favorable mention of them and a refutation of atheist condemnations of them here:
    Audio Bibles and Atheist Hypocrisy.

Meanwhile, atheists internet wide are taking umbrage at this while not bothering to note that FCBY is teamed up with another org and are supplying food for the body and soul.

For the past few years atheists worldwide have literally wasted enormous amounts of money during times of recession, war and poverty not in helping anyone in any material need but in order to purchase bus ads and billboards attempting to demonstrated just how clever they consider themselves to be; and now they want to become the charity police—please!
