The Senate drove a stake through President Bush’s plan to legalize millions of unlawful immigrants, likely postponing major action on immigration until after the 2008 elections.
The bill’s supporters fell 14 votes short of the 60 needed to limit debate and clear the way for final passage of the legislation, which critics assailed as offering amnesty to illegal immigrants. The vote was 46 to 53 in favor of limiting the debate.
Senators in both parties said the issue is so volatile that Congress is highly unlikely to revisit it this fall or next year, when the presidential election will increasingly dominate American politics.
There goes another slam-dunk.
#31 – Bwahahahahahaha 🙂
22–You leave me confused, but thats ok. We can focus on some other issue at another time.
For now, I think its true that both outsourcing and immigration (whether legal or not) exerts a downward pressure on American wages. That even playing field you speak of also includes offering worse services for less wages==can’t be avoided, its a choice both sides of the bargaining table make, and you can’t trust management to not aim low.
You would have to direct me to a specific post wherein someone who is against immigration is motivated by racism. I haven’t seen it except as a joke. I don’t think racism should be brought into a discussion unless it is raised pretty directly.
By truncated, yes==machines won’t flip a burger, but that is why I restricted my example to vegetable picking. The hospitality industry would just have to pay more for labor or get more visa’s or work permits approved.
34—only one person was the worst decider in the world. I’d give that to Hitler for the decision to invade Russia late in the year, only because that might raise fewer hackles than 5 other really stupid decisions of his.
So, yea, BushCo is not the worst decider in history. However, I don’t see any connection between unrest in Iran and BushCo’s policies. If it weren’t for Bush, maybe those dissents could have taken over 3 years ago??? How can you ever tell?
Anyway, favor us with your analysis.

I didn’t say that there were posts here touting racism as a motive. What are they going to do, say “yeah, let’s keep those fucking beaners and spics where they belong”? I’m talking about people I have encountered in everyday life; some white collar, some blue collar, who are rabidly against the immigration bill. The kind of people who think Ann Coulter is cool. And not a single one of them actually wants to work the jobs the illegal immigrants are working, they just can’t stand it that they can come to America and try to make a better life.
36–you’re right. amusing to find myself “reading into” something that is not there at all. Innocent motivation here, doesn’t excuse it. How do we ever communicate anything?????
I thought Ann Coulter was interesting for the first few months. Her attackers get unhinged so easily. Then I heard her say that not only was darwin wrong but that there was no evidence at all for evolution. I don’t think she was pimping her book, but who knows??? Still, she is a unique voice, doesn’t say half of what is attributed to her, and is worth listening to. Cool?—No.
>>Still, she is a unique voice, doesn’t say half of what is attributed to her,
Well, I don’t know what is attributed to her. I’ve read a couple of her books thougn, and it’s hard to imagine that anyone could attribute ANYTHING more hateful, ignorant, xenophobic, self-serving, and just plain disgusting than what she really DOES say. That woman makes Howard Stern look like Jesus.
39—Now isn’t that unique and for that reason alone interesting?
If you listed every vile thing she has actually said, I might disagree with you 20% (?) of the time? It would all depend on the a priori assumptions we make on what she means and exactly what she is complaining about.
But then maybe I’m “reading out” something that is actually there? (smile!)
I gave her disgusting Darwin example. Which is your favorite? ((looking for an argument===er, discussion))
How about when she embarrassed the New York Times by discovering that they were using the same guy for their man-on-the-street quotes? They had no idea.
37—good one. Could say the same re your comment on attaching that hand to a robot as well.
Well, you blow right by the biggest stupidity==that he’s a true believing Muslim.
Actually, you moreso are pointing out how similar he is to Bush, this doesn’t bode well. Two guys arguing over which religious oil man-president is dumber? America could easily find itself in the same predictament-lack of refineries causing shortages.
Whether the market should allow prices to rise in that circumstance, or the government step in to subsidize will cause stress either way, but in this case “in a sense” Abbababamenajob heart is alteast in the right place–unless its just another case pandering to the popultion to keep his job??
To steal a word………..CRIPES!!!
OFTLO – You’re a great American!
Step 1 – Make the border an obstacle course that a 10 year SEAL would have a very hard time surviving. Then let ’em come. If you speak English and survive – you’re in.
If ever there’s going to be a solution to this problem it’s going to require compromise on both sides. First, document the undocumented. The biggest problem with illegals is they have no documentation, establish a new identification that gives illegals some limited rights and allows the government to know where they are, what they’re up to and even tax them. The same ID process can be linked to a legal immigration procedure. I’m all for more strict border control, but you can’t ignore the millions of illegals already in the USA
Then they should go to the consulates of their home countries to work out that problem. That’s not the USA’s job.
46—don’t you think the biggest problem with the illegals is that they are illegal?
Keep your eye on the target!
