A shiny new ballistic-missile submarine docked at a naval base in China has been spied publicly for the first time using Google Earth.

The new class of nuclear sub, called the Jin-class, had been rumoured to exist for some time, but the image recently uploaded to Google Earth is the first public glimpse of the vessel.

It is unknown how many Jin-class submarines China intends to build. An ONI report from 2006 estimated they would need five in order to set up a permanent presence in the oceans.

Cripes! Nothing like another hundred or so nuclear ballistic missiles added to the planet.

    And I care because?

  2. GaryInMiami says:

It’s one of those rubberized inflatable look alikes the US used so successfully during the lead-up to D-Day in WWII. Now the US will spend billions more each year searching for subs that don’t exist. And that’s great for China because they’re one of the leading sources of money the US government is living on.

#2, China could also just hack the Google servers and photoshop an image to their military advantage. The single most dangerous element in the world today is not weapons. It is low consciousness. On a scale of consciousness from 1 to 10 (10 being Buddha or Jesus consciousness) the world average is 3. The U.S. Constitution is a 5. The Bill of Rights a 6. The average consciousness in the bible-belt is a 4 whereas the major Democratic cities are a 5-6. There are neighborhoods in NYC and several households in SF that are 7-9. If you want to see a 10 you have to go to the mountains.

    Hey Editors:
If you are going to post Google Earth stuff how about posting the coordinates so we can see it in context for ourselves?

Do I have to say Please?

[The coordinates are not always available with the photo. We’ll keep your suggestion in mind though. – ed.]

Didn’t John C. mention on a recent CrankyGeeks about how the government (U.S.) wanted to stop people from viewing certain areas of the Earth because of there military importance and that it was a fruitless effort because all the images were out of date?

I guess its not so fruitless after all.

You should care because they work: After all, they got the designs from us.

That being said, there will never be a war with China: There’s too much money to lose.

  11. Bob says:

Ever since the fall of the soviet union their have been less Russian subs crawling under the ocean, and therefor less need for attack subs to track those subs. I guess this gives those brand new Virginia Class attack subs a reason to live exist.

Here are the coordinates that you can plug into Google Earth to see the submarine:
