Local News | Unclaimed item left aboard detained Alaska Airlines plane ruled harmless | Seattle Times Newspaper

Police determined that an unclaimed object that prompted the brief isolation of an Alaska Airlines plane carrying 104 passengers and five crew members today at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport was harmless, an airport spokeswoman said…Before landing in Seattle from San Jose at about 11:40 a.m., the pilot of Flight 383 informed the airport control tower that he had something on his plane that was of concern to him, said Betancourt.

She said the item “looked like a cellphone”

found by Aric Mackey who adds: The terrorists have won.

    Chickenshit Little…

  2. Phillep says:

Hmmm, do we have a solution to the airlines locking people in the plane for hours instead of letting them out?

  3. GigG says:

    You clipped the last sentence.

“She said the item “looked like a cellphone” but was uncertain of its identity.”

This raises the question are the SEA-TAC airport spokesperson and pilot of the flight so disconected from reality that they don’t know for sure what a cell phone looks like or was this something that they had never seen before but it kinda looked like a cell phone?

Yes this was probably a case of over reaction but I’ll bet Yahya Abdal-Tif Ayyash might disagree if he were alive.

  4. hhopper says:

Next time your stuck on a plane on the ground, just tell the flight attendant that you see a suspicious package under one of the seats. Be sure there’s a package there or they’ll grab you in addition to getting all the passengers off of the plane.

  5. Improbus says:

Maybe they just saw the last episode of Chuck where a character was killed by an exploding cell phone. You know, if it is on TV it must be true.

  6. GigG says:

    # 4 Great idea.

Note to self: Carry throw-down cell phone on all flights.

  7. erik says:

Did they take it off the plane before they blew it up?

  8. ECA says:

I would RASIE the phone OVEr my head and ASK…
ANYONE LOOSE A PHONE??? 20 seconds Before I throw it OUT the door…

  9. Rob says:

    “The terrorists have won.”

The terrorists won the day George Bush was appointed dictator by the Supreme Court in 2000. They’ve been coasting on their victory ever since.

  11. Thomas says:

Seriously, put down the bong, read a little history, enhance your calm and get over the 2000 election. Do you still hear Republicans whine about how the 1960 election was stolen? They got over it. So should you.

  12. Winston Smith says:

#11 writes “Do you still hear Republicans whine about how the 1960 election was stolen?”

Yet another Republican lie. I am old enough to remember the 1960 election. Perhaps you should be the one to actually read some history, and not the lies put out by the Republicans.

The recounts cost Nixon another 3 electoral votes. This article is a pretty good summary of the 1960 election: http://www.slate.com/id/91350/

Repubs are still using the old “the other guys stole the election” gambit whenever they lose a close election. What a sorry bunch of losers the Repubs are.

  13. Thomas says:

    #13
Clearly, you did not understand. Should I type with smaller words? The validity of the Republican’s claim to the “stealing” of the 1960 election are as valid as the Democrat’s claim to the “stealing’ of the 2000 election. (for those that think slow, that means I’m saying they are *both* invalid). So, if the Republicans in 1960 are a “sorry bunch” then so too are the Democrats in 2000.

  14. Thomas says:

    #12
(Btw, the previous post was directed at #12 not itself ;0).

#12, did you actually read the article you posted?

On the other hand, some fraud clearly occurred in Cook County. At least three people were sent to jail for election-related crimes, and 677 others were indicted before being acquitted by Judge John M. Karns, a Daley crony. Many of the allegations involved practices that wouldn’t be detected by a recount, leading the conservative Chicago Tribune, among others, to conclude that “once an election has been stolen in Cook County, it stays stolen.” What’s more, according to journalist Seymour Hersh, a former Justice Department prosecutor who heard tapes of FBI wiretaps from the period believed that Illinois was rightfully Nixon’s. Hersh also has written that J. Edgar Hoover believed Nixon actually won the presidency but in deciding to follow normal procedures and refer the FBI’s findings to the attorney general—as of Jan. 20, 1961, Robert F. Kennedy—he effectively buried the case.

  15. Greymoon says:

Yeah Nixon worked out real well. Perhaps had he won in ’60 and JFK in ’68 the magic bullet would have been slightly less magical.

  16. Cinaedh says:

Diagnosis: Terrorized by terrorists, then themselves.

The Treatment: Repeat after me, as many times as it takes:

And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

  17. Phillep says:

LOL. Cut the emotive and biased language and take another look at what Nixon actually accomplished in office. You will not discover from the news media of the era that he got a peace treaty with North Viet Nam, or that he forced integration through.

The main attack on Nixon was that he had some incompetents working for him. Wheee! Let’s nail all politicians for incompetent subordinates!

  18. hhopper says:

Amazing! A cellphone left on a plane reverts to a discussion of who won the presidency and when. Unbelievable!

  19. Phillep says:

18 – Yeah, everything is related to whatever the fanatics are excited about, except what they deem as a total waste of time discussing because even they cannot figure out how to relate it to their obsession. That takes some doing, considering how so many today seem to use the same logic structure as TV commercials.

That shoe heel bomb a few years ago was supposed to have been powerful enough to blow out the side of the plane. Could that cell phone contain as much explosive? Was the cell phone against the outside of the plane?

  20. hhopper says:

Anything laying around unattended in a public area is a threat. And well it should be.

    …Except for winos.

  21. Winston Smith says:

#14 Thomas, did you read the entire article? The fraud in Cook County had no effect on the outcome. Nixon still lost 3 more electoral votes. Kennedy won fair and square.

I remember, I was there. You weren’t, you’re too young. All you know about it is the lies that the repugnicans are telling you.

And #18 and #19, the reason the repugnicans are in control now is because for decades their lies went unchallenged. They continue to lie and people will continue to believe them unless those who know different call them out on their lies.

    WMDs anyone?

  22. Greg Allen says:

With all the irrational fear in this country right now, I’m surprised there aren’t more pranksters.

If people get this freaked out over a lost cell phone — how about if someone left a brick of wrapped cheese? That might even actually LOOK like C4.

Is it illegal to leave cheese unattended in an airplane?

  23. MikeN says:

Winston, the charges from 1960 also include LBJ fraud in Texas.

  24. MikeN says:

As for this climate of fear, I’m much more concerned when it happens in other aspects, such as at the medical office.

#18, hhopper, A cellphone left on a plane reverts to a discussion of who won the presidency and when. Unbelievable!

What’s unbelievable to me is no one here said “When is a cellphone not a cellphone? When it’s an iPhone!”

Now that’s unbelievable. Exactly why I waited late to post, just to see if it would happen. Darn, now I did it. Never mind.

  26. Thomas says:

You were in Cook County at all of the ballot boxes during the 1960 election? Amazing. Texas too? Incredible. So, by your, eh hem, “logic”, if you were not in Iraq prior to the invasion, it means you know nothing about WMDs either right? It must mean you and I know nothing about Waterloo since we weren’t there. The argument of “you weren’t there you don’t know” is specious.

The point here is simple: the arguments of Gore’s victory in 2000 are as invalid as those claiming Nixon won in 1960. Frankly, I think that Gore lost fair and square in 2000 as did Nixon in 1960. Did Kennedy have “special” help from dad’s connections? I’m sure he did but he still took a majority of the country.

  27. Thomas says:

    #27
Do you have trouble reading? I agree that Kennedy won the election and that Republicans should stop whining about losing. However, I ALSO think that Gore lost the 2000 election and the Democrats should stop whining about losing that one.

    > There was no controversy about the electoral
    > vote count. No one claimed that Nixon should
    > have won the electoral vote.

Frankly, you are wrong. Kennedy won the Electoral College 303 to 219. Had Nixon taken both Texas and Illinois, the two states with the most election controversy, Nixon would have won 270 to 252. Basically, those two States decided the election. So, yes there was controversy about entire election result *including* the Electoral College.

The Electoral College is most definitely not outmoded. It is the last bastion of the Republic. The people do not elect the President. The States elect the President.

    > Repubs today lie; if they told the truth no
    > one would ever vote for them except other sociopaths

Here’s a news flash: Republicans back then lied; so did and do Democrats. It would be more accurate to say that politicians did lie and currently lie. If Democrats told the truth, they would not get elected either.
