San Diego firefighter holds onto his hat in Santa Ana wind

  1. grog says:

is that one of the handful of people who glenn beck says hate america?

  2. jdm says:

That’s what parts of Orange County’s high-tech area looked like in Irvine, CA yesterday. Things are much clearer today, thanks to both the favorable winds and the excellent and skilled fire control.

  3. Rabble Rouser says:

One wonders why people would want to live in an area that catches fire, has hurricane winds, mudslides, not to mention earthquakes.

  4. Jägermeister says:

#2 – “…the excellent and skilled fire control.”

Fire control… you must be freaking kidding me.

  5. Raff says:

So what sparked all these fires? Arson? Did a big lightening storm roll through?

  6. mark says:

    5. Be careful there, the T word is on everyones tongue especially W.

  7. hhopper says:

They reported that the highest wind gust yesterday was 108 mph. Unreal!

    Another scary photo.

  8. Steve S says:

#5 So what sparked all these fires?

Combine 5% humidity, a record year of rainfall followed by a couple of years of drought (some areas of California had less than 2″ last year), days of winds with gusts up to 108 MPH and ANYTHING can start a fire.

  9. HisMostHumblyExhaultedSupremeGlobalWarmingMajesty says:

#5 – they have fires every year because this time of year is very dry. I guess this year the problem is worse than usual because of unusually strong Santa Ana winds.

It’s strange to look through the entire slide show and see houses that are right on the beach burning.

  10. HisMostHumblyExhaultedSupremeGlobalWarmingMajesty says:

108? wow. That’s the high end of F1 tornado speeds. How much wind damage are they getting apart from the fires?

  11. jdm says:

#3 – The weather isn’t better anywhere else in the lower-48 than SoCal–at least 99.9% of the time.

  12. pjakobs says:

kudos to the Firefighters, wherever in the world they might do their job.

  13. jdm says:

#7 – That picture shows a major part of the problem: shake shingle roofs. Most of the older homes in SoCal have that type of inexpensive, cedar shingle roof which is very combustible in hot, dry weather. Building codes don’t allow their use for new structures anymore, but many homeowners haven’t yet replaced their shake roofs with laminate, slate, or asphalt tiles.

I am new to commenting here but the constant use of commenters post # instead of name is a little weird, reminds me of 7/9 (star trek)

    @BlogKast

You will be assimilated into the Dvorak Collective!

  16. pjakobs says:

#16, what on vogon are you doing? How am I supposed to find a reference by name? yikes!

  17. Raff says:

    8-9

I know they usually happen this time every year, but what sparked these particular fires? Usually fire officials come up with a cause. i.e cigarette butt, lightening, faulty muffler on a dirt bike etc…

    Any word?

  18. jdm says:

#18 – So far they’ve identified as sources: power lines down by winds, spot fires, and arson in Orange County. It won’t surprise me if they look at where and when the fires started in the first 36 hours and decide that arson was the probable cause for many of them.

  19. jdm says:

UPDATE: A new report says that the fire up in Canyon County, CA near Magic Mountain may have been caused by someone welding.

  20. ArianeB says:

Reporter’s own house burned to the ground

It wasn’t so pretty in the Irvine / Lake Forest area where I work today.

We watch the fire most of the day and it wasn’t pretty…..

I expected to see a lot of homes gone, but the little fire support in the area managed to save them all as far as I could see overlooking the Nakatasi nursery.

  22. Phillep says:

That’s a stupid area to build. People moved there because the winters are warm and then they have to cool down in the summer, meaning lots of electricity and lots of water.

Not quite as stupid as moving to New Orleans or the San Juaquin Delta, but working on it.

BTW, stick houses stand up to earthquakes better and hurt less when they fall on your head. They also burn better than brick or the alternatives.

  23. Jägermeister says:

    #1, #24

Is it just a coincidence that both Glenn Beck and George W Bush are former cokeheads?

  24. HisMostHumblyExhaultedSupremeGlobalWarmingMajesty says:

#23 – I would imagine that a steel frame would flex and hold up as well as wood. They definitely should be using steel roofs.

  25. Not Lauren the Ghoti says:

    #24, pedro,

…is now obvious that Sean Penn got his share.

    You’re a fucking asshole.
