If you have ever had the opportunity to spend time with dolphins, you quickly realize what an intelligent and unique animal they are.
An arrest warrant has reportedly been issued in Japan for “Heroes” star Hayden Panettiere over her dolphing-saving attempt last month in the country, but the actress appears to have no fear.
In a statement released Thursday afternoon to Access Hollywood, Hayden branded the arrest warrant “defensive.”“Obviously this issue has generated defensive behavior on the part of both the Japanese Authorities and Fishermen,” she said in the statement. “I have grown up hearing – and adhering to – this phrase: ‘condemnation without investigation dooms one to everlasting ignorance.’
During a trip to Japan last month, Hayden put her life on the line trying to prevent fisherman from slaughtering a group of dolphins.
Hayden and five others paddled out on surfboards into the ocean on a pre-dawn mission to disrupt the local fishermen’s efforts to catch and kill the dolphins. However, as the group made their way towards the pod of dolphins, who appeared to be caught in the net, Hayden, a spokesperson for SaveTheWhalesAgain.org, and friends were intercepted by one of the small fishing boats.
The fishermen used the boat’s propellers to block the surfers’ way and used a long boathook to try and push them away.
The dramatic and dangerous encounter lasted for several minutes before Hayden and her group was forced to return to shore as the animals were slaughtered.
“They were so pretty. They were teddy bears in the water,” an emotional Hayden explained to Access Hollywood earlier this month. “They slowed down and started gathering in the net towards us. This little baby popped its head out and looked at us and all of us just wanted to cut them out of the nets and set them free.”
Shameful.

But she wasn’t actually arrested was she?
I thought they only issued a warrant, but it’s in Japan. So as long as she stays out of Japan, then she won’t have a problem.
Sucks for the “Heroes” fans there.
Interesting comments about dolphin killing, bad bad. Was it to cold last spring for the baby seal clubbing in Canada to get her star involvement, or is that maybe OK. Did you ever play hide and seek with a calf. A pig makes a better, more intelligent pet than a dog, once house trained that is. Oh well I have given up on all meat. I only eat things that grow from the earth. Prefer my flour, sugar and apples in a pie form. That’s why I’m to fat to catch and kill anything. But fats bad. Sigh, I’ll have to ask my local theoretician about it’s theory on this.
The Japanese may be polite but they are really heartless bastards.
That quote of hers is something the posters here could remember. All most any time you talk about a court case, you get it wrong, just parroting some left-wing talking points.
#29….stormko….What f*&^ing planet do you live on?
If you added up every human ever killed by Americans throughout our history, it still wouldn’t be 2% of the number killed by the Japanese in Northern China alone before WWII. You massacured almost a million civilians during the war to take Manchuria, plus another 300,000 Chinese troops, then outright killed or caused to starve to death another million during the next 6 years, plus the hundreds of thousands who died in Japanese slave camps in China. Add to that a half million Phillipino’s and another 150,000 Indonesians, 100,000 Burmese and 300,000 Vietnamese, Laotians and Malaysians. Oh, and we must not forget 2 million Koreans during your occupation of that country. Japan is the most blood thirsty nation on this planet, EVER!!!!
Japan takes pride in it’s little rock gardens of harmony, but has no qualms about destroying entire eco-systems in the oceans around it’s mainland. 3/4 of the endangered fish and ocean mammals are due to Japanese fishing policies alone. Of all Asian people the Japanese are by far the least concerned about humanity and the most deadly……there’s a reason why every other Asian country hates Japan and it’s not because of haiku.
As far as animals killing for pleasure, it’s a myth. It dosen’t happen The Orca may seek revenge and remember a wrong against it and have been seen tossing seals into the air before eating them, but the kill isn’t for fun and games like it can be with humans. Polar bears will not usually attack you unless they feel threatened once they have eaten. Polar bears have been known to play toss ball with humans and even hide and seek, when they weren’t hungry. If they attack you it’s because you have knowingly or unknowingly threatened them or their cubs or they are hungry. At least if a Polar bear eat’s my butt I will be a happy camper to know that in my small way I have helped in the survival of a majestic creature.
And yes….I do eat meat, but I go through a very difficult process to make sure the meat I eat is not tortured, abused or any of the other things that the domestic meat industry is famous for doing. I buy direct from a butcher that buy’s directly from an organic cattle ranch. Same with chicken and egg’s or any food that I eat.
I think what Panettiere did was a good thing, and maybe this year she will protest the harp seal slaughter, that’s up to her. I’m just glad that she at least tried to stop the dolphin slaughter.
The evidence I’ve seen has lead me to accept that animals, at least animals that have any testable intelligence, are as cruel and mean and evil as humans given similar pressures.
More examples: compare and contrast the Bonobo vs. Common Chimpanzee (Bonobos are suppose less war like than Chimpanzee).
There is going to be a distribution, gaussian or otherwise, that describes how the set of individuals in a population behave, and I would be surprised if that distribution did not highly correlate with the range and frequency of behaviors of humans. Meaning, generally most individuals try to be “good”, but not everyone.
How did the fantasy originate that non-human animals are somehow morally superior to humans? It sounds like some hippy-drippy idea from the 1960s. I won’t buy it unless presented with evidence. Glossing over Orca behavior as “playing” is not sufficient evidence for me.
I neither love nor hate animals. I only care that the Earth hase a diverse ecosystem.

I’m not talking about tallying up the death count in a country’s history (which America’s is very short compared to Japan’s), I’m talking about currently. Right now, Americans kill more people than Japan does. There are almost no gun related deaths in Japan, but there are tens of thousands every year in the United States. And if we’re talking about senseless killing of intelligent animals, then the U.S. is at the top of the list. Of all the major nations, we (Americans) kill more of the most intelligent species (humans) on the planet.
You mentioned that Japan “has no qualms about destroying entire eco-systems in the oceans around it’s mainland”. But the United States is the one of the biggest contributors to environmental pollution in the world–if not THE biggest. Where’s the qualms there? Even Japan’s recycling system is more developed than America’s–which in many cities is not even applicable.
As I said, I am disgusted by the treatment of those dolphins, but my whole point has always been this: it’s really easy to come up in here and get all hyped up on disliking a whole country for the actions of a some of it’s people (the fishermen and government do not equal all of Japan). I’m saying that if you’re going to point the finger at them, let’s not forget your own country’s shortcomings, as well. Because the way everyone is going after Japan on this in this thread is the same way a LOT of the world is beginning to dislike the United States for the things it’s been doing. The holy-than-thou crap is pretty hypocritical.

By the way, John, “Tech 5” and “No Agenda” are good. Keep it up. And it’d be nice to hear you on the Laporte podcasts more.
#37 stormko…..I am in no way claiming a *holier than thou* stance. I just like to point out to all the America basher’s out there that we ALL live in glass houses.
Not since the mass killing of Bison has there been such a complete wiping out of species in this country. And most nations at least try these days to stop pollution and enviromental damage(without a whole lot of success)…..but Japan just refuses to stop whale and dolphin hunting. Even the Japanese goverment admit’s it has warehouses full of whale and dolphin that it can’t sell and has taken to giving it to old folks homes to use. Then why are they going to kill another projected(their projection, not mine) 700 minke whale this season and at least 200 humpback for their so-called **scientific research**?
As far as my comparison of deaths caused by countries……I was comparing all of American history to just the last 80 years of Japanese history……
somethings are just wrong. Nomura Takeshi get your head out your *** and the dark ages.
Your level of ignorance is mindboggling.. for those that have nothing good to say, dont say anything.
Btw Im an oriental.

“…we ALL live in glass houses.”
I agree. That has been my point the entire time.
I think when these sort issues come up, we tend to go after a broad group of people instead of focusing on the particular ones responsible. So we say “Japan” or “America” as if it’s the entire population doing doing the things we dislike. You are bashing Japan the way you are mentioning people bash America. Instead of talking about the actual people responsible for what happened to the dolphins (the fishermen/government that supports it), you went after the entire country–the same thing that people are currently doing to America.
I’m not attacking you, but I’m pointing out that you are doing the same thing you dislike. Perhaps the anger over the dolphin situation clouded your own response.

The irony is that you added nothing to the conversation with your own comment, but had no problem promoting your web site.
I would have done it.
I applaud her.
Though maybe thats just my superior vegetarianism speaking…
But like post #16 pointed out, i would have a secret assault team underwater with scuba gear and adequate equipment to destroy the nets.
… Maybe sneak up under the boat and plant some kind of explosive if i were feeling particularly spiteful that day (Maybe if i were having a PMS-ish day).
