In his early 30s, fresh off his release from prison on rape charges, Timothy Krajcir enrolled in college to study psychology and the criminal justice system. Like other students, Krajcir was seeking self-enlightenment, a detective said.

But over the next six years, Krajcir murdered at least six women in two states, covering up his crimes in part by using what he learned at Southern Illinois University, authorities said.

“He said initially he was trying to figure himself out. But he failed, obviously,” said James Smith, a Cape Girardeau police detective who helped link Krajcir to five homicides here dating back 30 years.

Yes, it’s another made-for-TV movie plot.

Authorities say Krajcir is a rare specimen — smart enough to elude police during his crime spree, and apparently private enough to keep his deeds secret in the ensuing years. He eventually graduated from Southern Illinois with a degree in law enforcement…

The lulls between Krajcir’s killings coincided with his stints behind bars on sex-related crimes, authorities said.

As technology advanced, police went back to physical evidence from two of the killings and made the DNA match to Krajcir in a database of offenders.

  1. MikeN says:

I wonder if his college degree was paid for by taxpayers? ANother rehabilitation effort, perhaps.

  2. Eden says:

It’s a scary thought! I wonder how long he served for rape, or if he had to check in with anyone randomly afterwards. It also brings up the subject of the shows like “CSI” or real crime shows to where it shows how the police caught them. I always thought it just gave them the tools or ideas they needed for NOT getting caught and not making the same mistakes others would make, as well as knowing what police would be looking for!
At least they caught him, but it’s heart wrenching to think all those women had to die.
It always seems that Serial killers are involved in someway with the FBI, police or military; whether by direct connection such as: being an officer, working in a building with them, having a relative who was one, etc. Or having an indirect connection, such as:a police scanner/radio, helping police, living close to a station, being part of neighborhood watch, being a night guard or security guard, or a MP.
There is almost ALWAYS a connection between
killers and law. (I’ve studied this for over 18 yrs, if I had not fell ill planned to be a Behavioral Psychiatrist/Psychologist at Quantico.(FBI)

  3. bobbo says:

Well to me this raises the benefit of having a DNA data base ON ALL OF US.

    yes, –privacy vs safety.

Seems to me the privacy issue has become a religious dogma to some while the safety aspects are still largely unappreciated.

Last I heard, still 100’s of thousuands of dna samples in refrigerators waiting to be tested==to free the wrongly convicted, and to charge the wrongly free.

    Lets get on it!!!

  4. Improbus says:

What is the difference between a cop and a criminal? A badge.

  5. Sceptic says:

Is it talking about Drew Peterson?

  6. god says:

    #4 – didn’t Mick Jagger say that first? 🙂

  7. Improbus says:

Could be … I can’t no satisfaction either.

  8. DeLeMa says:

    bobbo –
Y’know, you really CAN make a case for any point of view..my problem with the one you express is it appears to be from the same mind set that helped GWB get elected and I still have ISSUES with that regime.

Safety at any cost ? That’s what it looks like from here so, call me an anarchist but, “you pays your money, you takes your chances..”

Knee jerk analysis of what we see, read, or hear in this country as regards all the threats we face together, today and in the most immediate of whatever we have for a future is about all I’ve ever seen from the people I expected better leadership from and not an agenda for greed, corruption and total disregard for the future of generations yet to come.

I’m no leader, especially in my own home so, I relegate myself to bitching wherever I can.

Not to say I’ve given up either, I do charity work and honestly try to support those in my community who are trying to steer a safe course for those of us who live here.
I support them but, I don’t want them or anyone else to have the tools it takes to create their version of utopia…for me.

    Peace to you and yours.

  9. Jennifer Emick says:

Anyone using what they “learned” on CSI would probably get caught. I can’t watch that awful show, it makes me cringe the science is so bad.

  10. Goldenhare22 says:

    Bobbo, Get a grip.
If you think that a database will protect you, all you have to do is review your history. People can and will do what they want when they want to. An option might be to send yer daughters and wives to learn a martial art. Tell em to always carry a pen or pencil in their pocket and be ready to use when ever they need to. AND EVEN BETTER STILL!! DO NOT LET KNOWN SEX OFFENDERS INTO LAW ENFORCMENT! DUH! Let em learn, of course, send those that never had a chance to school. Have convictis learn the cycle of life by growing plants, have them learn how to care, by caring for animals. Paint, draw, learn computer science(hmm, maybe not,… maybe?) Anything BUT THE ARMY AND LAW ENFORCMENT.
Life is risk, get to know your nieghbor…a little. Be careful, and hope for the best. And may you and your kin be protected. We have to look out for each other.

  11. bobbo says:

Whoa! –responses on point. Wow–didn’t happen the last 3 times I posted the same idea, I think OFTLO is so pissed at this idea he skips responding. So—-

    # 8 DeLeMa –Safety at any cost? NO. The issue is “Should we take DNA samples for a criminal data base?” I say yes. I see it as very unintrusive and every crime solved such as in the OT is very beneficial to many people. If cost is a prohibitive factor right now, then ok, just DNA anyone that gets booked. That would be a start. So, don’t reject an exaggerated extension of what was said.

Now how being in favor of criminals being caught by DNA evidence is part of the GWB mindset is a bit beyond me. Can you hook it up more directly? “Be relevant.”

    # 10 Goldenhare22 ==will DNA data base protect me? Of course it will, thats its only justification. Will it protect me 100% of the time?==NO and any such notion is irrelevant. Go to the top post. This predator was caught with no other tool than DNA in a refrigerator. He will not kill again. Future victims have been saved. The family who lost a member got some closure. Innocent people have not been charged with his crimes. Good deal all around.

  12. Goldenhare22 says:

And By reviewing history, I mean evidence may convict the right guy or the wrong guy. Hopefully often, the right guy. For what it’s worth, I do truly believe that Law enforcment does it’s best with what comes to them, But they are human, these institutions are human, and sometimes mistakes are made. To expect anything less would be stupid, though, wouldn’t it be great if it was perfect. It’s not…yet. So, again, if we can help them out by making ourselves and our communities a little more brave, calm, and capable (a little hand to hand combat instruction has proved successful to improve self esteem, over all performance, AND how to diffuse a situation) we might be less prone to predators. But who the heck am I?

  13. Goldenhare22 says:

Yes, DNA Caught him. No argument there. However this whole thing may have been avoided IF THEY DIDN”T LET A KNOWN SEX OFFENDER INTO THE TUFF GUY-WITH-BADGES HOUSE. HE WAS A PEDAFILE. How much power would you like to give that guy if you lived in that town, then? All I’m saying is that it doesn’t take a rocket scientist or intellectual to know that that may have been a bad idea. It seems common knowledge that the criminal mind is unusually smart, despite grammar and vocabulary. Do you have a daughter, wife or elderly female relative, Bobbo? Well, if you were in the woods and giant fanged animal were going to attack, would you want to have to pretend that you could defend them, or would you want to have them able to think enough to perhaps takes turns causing distractions while who ever can, does what they can. Helpless and dependent VS ABLE and WILLING TO TRY. THAT is my point.

  14. Goldenhare22 says:

    But Really Bobbo,
I must apologize for getting my dander in a tuft. I’m with you. IT is a terrible thing that there are folks like this out there and that we have no control over it.

  15. bobbo says:

What are ex-con’s supposed to do if they don’t get jailed forever on first offense?

DNA is the type of control we evidently both support? and yes, of course, everyone should know how to defend themselves as much as possible. That would go for my sons, father, and elderly male relatives too.

  16. I always knew cops were psychos.

  17. Goldenhare22 says:

Well it seems at the end of the day we agree on all fronts, Bobbo. But you have to admit, people go toward what is put in front of them, usually, whether it’s pills or th po-po. If you give them only one solution (the DNA Database) they will look to that as the only solution, Leaving out other possiblities, like boning up, and getting to know their community, etc. Also, maybe I am closed minded on the issue, but, I think the doors to a career in law enforcement and or child care, might want to be closed to sex offenders. There are plenty of other jobs that need doing. Why tempt fate more than necessary. thank you for this exchange, Bobbo. Seriously, I got all worked up. The debate has been refreshing.

  18. Mister Catshit says:

    Bobbo,

How about we all get our SSN tattooed on our foreheads and a GPS transmitter implanted under our skin too. They might even print a bar code on our forearms. That would sure halt a lot of stolen identity abuse.

  19. DeLeMa says:

    Mr.C.S.
It’s hard to be relevant but, I’l try…

Mindset reference is towards the mega doses of fear the current regime uses to forward their agenda(s).
Their solutions have always included more and more erosion of individual freedoms if not rights. I really think you knew this already but, it’ll have to stand as my “relevant” input of the day.
Similarly, if we are to trust that this regime and those that look inevitable to follow will define a criminal and thereby justify inclusion in ANY database then I don’t have a lot of confidence you, me or a whole lot of others living here will be excluded.
I do like the idea you express so eloquently, I simply do not trust anyone currently in a position to employ it to do so without abuse.
    My two sense worth.
(As Larry would say, “Lord, I’m sorry for these bad puns but…”)

May you know Peace and Joy before the end of the year.
(And get their phone number for me too..)

    Cops are not psychos.

    They are sociopaths.

Neurotics build castles in the sky.
    Psychotics live in them.
Sociopaths provide security as they love uniforms.
