So says a politician named McCain:

Republican presidential candidate John McCain said today he believes the Iraq war can be won by 2013, leaving a functioning democracy there and allowing most U.S. troops to come home.

It was the first time the Arizona senator has said when U.S. troops could be withdrawn from Iraq. His speech came as the House of Representatives voted to set a goal of withdrawing all troops by the end of next year and defeated legislation to fund the war.

“It’s not a timetable. It’s victory…”

It’s…MISSION ACCOMPLISHED.

When I here this I think of Korea. Since we have Iran next door. I do not see how we can ever leave Iraq. I really think John McCain is a outstanding person. But his refusal to admit that Iraq has hurt this country more than any terrorist attack could have is going to cause him the election. I think as a military man he is refusing to accept defeat.
I think we have accomplished our goal to get rid of Saddam. But we need to accept the fact that civil war will probably happen and that we must allow it to play out just as it did in American history.

I’m curious what would happen if the US had to get involved in a war with Iran or North Korea. It’s not unlikely given our relations with them. With so much of our military focused on Iraq (so much so that the Air Force and Navy are rotating personnel into Army positions), will we have to reinstate the draft?

I wonder if these scenarios are considered with thinking of getting out of Iraq. I don’t think we’d stand a chance in hell if war broke out with a large, nuclear-capable country. Isn’t that a good reason to get our troops out of Iraq?

    Even you got it wrong.

    Its not oil its geography.

Look at a map and look who is there and where we are at with allies and presence in the region.

Now look carefully at where we are not?

See a pattern? Think like Napoleon.

  6. Jeff says:

I think basically #5 did as well. The war in Iraq is about political power and not oil or dumping property assets. If we can sell them our infrastructure so much the better. Oil is icing on the cake. We do absolutely need it, but there are a number of other sources.

The truth, however, is that Bush got reelected on running a platform to win the Iraq war and War on Terrorism. America does not like to be viewed as being a loser in the international community.

Arguing on principles of logical rational will not work in this case. Americans have a vested interest in believing we were always right. Combine this with good old racism and, or sexism and you can pretty much assure that McCain takes office in 2009.

I think the key to the McCain ticket will be who they choose for the #2 slot. It likely will be this individual who will be facing reelection at the end of his first term. This of course is assuming a lot (dreading).

I got nothing wrong. Geographic position? Wtf are you saying, we will need sand after the oil is gone? Iraq is the US base in the oil rich area of the world. It will remain until the oil is gone.

I look to see all kinds of new side-way drilling tech coming out soon after Cheney joins another oil company board.

Supposedly the world max production level is 85 mililon barrels a day, and that level of usage has been reached.
