Huh? Wha? This is my brother Dennis and my other brother Dennis.
The above is a picture of hurricane Dennis. Oh wait, this was Hurricane Dennis from 1999. Apparently Dennis is back. It must have bumped around for a few years. Or what? Have they completely run out of names and have to recycle now? I sure do not recall a hurricane Dudly or Davey or Dagmar. How about Hurricane Damien to scare the bejibbers out of the bible belt?
At least go here to BabyNamesWorld and see what you can find. Click on the letter E for the next storm.

And NASA still wants to go ahead with launching the Shuttle….
At all costs?
Challenger deja vu?
Hurricane Dvorak it is
I never understood why they always start at “A” every year. When was the last time you heard of Hurricane Zachary?
You’re just in a snit because they didn’t name it Hurricane Dvorak.
As for the bible belt reference, why can’t we have Hurricane Dixie?
Yes, John. They reuse hurricane names. (There are only so many names in the world.) Actually they rotate through six lists of names, which you can find on the National Hurricane Center’s website, which means this year’s names will be used in 2011.
However, if a hurricane is particularly bad and damaging, they will retire that name, (for example, Andrew won’t be used for a storm again because of 1992’s Hurricane Andrew).
Hurricane names are recycled every six years. Names of particularly disastrous storms, such as Hugo, Andrew, and Fran, are replaced. It’s been done this way ever since they standardized the method of picking names, decades ago. I guess they think they have better things to do than sit around every year coming up with new names.
So, a computer can’t just pick a name out of an index of a few thousand names? Why does anyone need to compile names? I don’t get it…doesn’t the governement have computers? How hard is it to have a computer programmed to randomly generate a name? And, why in the heck do we need lists of recycled names? How old fashioned. We might as well go back to just using WOMEN”S names.
I’m sick of the same ol’names…..we should have some updated ones…like Hurricane Brooke, and Hurricane Dewayne, and Hurricane Jafari,…some more unusual, trendy, ethnic and interesting names…. because who ever uses the name DENNIS anymore? Old fart names….yeesh. All white-bread, middle-class WASP names. Bleah.
YEAH!!! I’m all for Hurricane Brooke- that’s my name and for some reason it’s not on the little hurricane name list…. though my husband and my brother in law’s names are both on the lists- Gordon will be coming up next year and Kyle in 2008. I also checked to see if I was on the list of retired hurricanes… no….. oh- and the reason that you wouldn’t see a hurricane Zachary anyway- even if they started at the back of the alphabet is because they only use A-W- excluding X,Y & Z as well as Q and U. So- I guess the hurricane center is against the letters X,Y,Z,Q, & U.
Fascinating discussion of hurricane names, as names like Katrina become part of people’s vocabulary. I just wanted to point out another naming website, that has a very large database — Baby Names Garden. It also has one of the best database’s for celebrity baby names on the web. Now there’s a resource! How about Hurricane Shiloh or Hurricane Suri?
