California ‘cannot save itself’ from global warming — I sometimes wonder how these articles get placed they way they do. Who are the PR people working for, and why?

Under the worst scenario, heat waves in Los Angeles are six to eight times more frequent, with up to seven times as many heat-related deaths as now. The Sierra snowpack falls by 90 percent.

But even if the lowest possible emissions were achieved, California’s water-reliant industries such as grape growing and dairy farming are doomed.

Yes, global warming causes snow too! Argh.

A site that says it’s all a hoax. But since it’s a Canadian site there could be a hidden agenda. Canada would be a big beneficary of global warming, eh?

Here are links to tons of other links on the topic. This will keep you busy for a year.

From the Junk Science folks to the environmentalists.

Meanwhile, this looks like the definitive site for links. Wow.

Searching around, Adam Lechmere apparently is a writer who started out with the inevitable ex-student hitch-hiking book — and worked his way up to getting sued by Yquem for a wine book which has been banned in France!

Nothing conspiratorial, here, John. Just the usual online/offline editors accepting an article that reflects what’s becoming “common knowledge”. While you can still bump into the odd scientist or two who rationalizes that “we can do nothing about global warming/it has nothing to do with our passion for burning oil/our near-term economy is more important than any potential negatives” — articles from real science will continue to be popularized by talented and/or untalented writers. And we will continue to bump merrily along the road to perdition. Until/unless we turn it around.

Yesterday, I was reading some interesting stuff on nations whose essential river-water supply is glacier-dependent. And they’re running out of glaciers.

There are small victories. The ever-expanding waiting list for hybrid automobiles is finally being addressed by manufacturers who’ve opened their eyes enough to notice there’s a market for lower emissions and better mileage. A wider range of vehicles is coming down the pike, literally. Grassroots activism feels a little frustrating, sometimes. But, it can add up to that vaguely satisfying process called “progress”.

Oops. A new client just called. Out the door, dude.

Yeah, I keep joking about this with my friend Larry. Depending on the weather here in Denver, I say “It’s due to global warming” or “It’s due to global cooling.” It’s good for a laugh. As for the lack of water in California, there’s this body of water called the Pacific Ocean. All that’s needed is cheap power, but this is going to require a mind set change out there. Can you say “nuclear”.

A particular state can’t save itself from global warming?

Isn’t that why it’s called global warming?

As Ed mentioned, nice to see hybrids taking-off – finally. Hopefully, GM will keep plugging-away at Hydrogen, too.

For hybrids, I’m still amazed that the focus still seems to be almost exclusively on gas mileage – and not on the reduction in emissions. I’ve read a few Prius reviews, in which the main point seems to be people aren’t getting the phenominal mileage they expected. Even if it got only slightly-better mileage than my current car, I’m still interested in a Prius because it has near-zero emissions.

There’s a debate going on, about how the world will end, with ice or with fire. I tend to believe it will be with fire. But that’s just me.
