1. RBG says:

As a kid, I couldn’t stand this version of Batman because it was so untrue to the “seriousness” of the DC comic book. And it went from bad to worse when their campiness infected the comic too. I think it’s quite fun now.

    RBG

  2. Hugh Ripper says:

Hard to go past Frank Miller’s and Alan Moore’s take on The Batman, but the TV show has its own kitsch charm.

  3. tcc3 says:

The comics was pretty goofy back in the day too.

Batman as Indian chief – And I’ll bet that’s not the silliest thing they ever did.

The darker, more serious Batman is a more modern phenomenon.

I agree with Hugh, the 60’s series is good for a laugh. The 90’s animated show however is brilliant.

  4. Overfifity says:

Oh ya that’s why I started smoking pot in the 60’s. Batman made a lot more sense stoned. As did a number of other shows and movies. If only I could remember which ones.

  5. SeaninSeattle says:

I want my three minutes, forty-five seconds back…

  6. I loved it.
These kinds of shows are judged by the quality of the villains
    Burgess Meredith
Eartha Kitt, as Cat Woman meoWow
    Vincent Price
    Cesar Romero
    Frank Gorshin
and more I’d need to look up
    Who wouldn’t love that show?
Ok will I was 8 when it went off the air but luckily it showed up in syndication for that after school before homework time in those cold dark winter months.

  7. Greg Allen says:

… and one of the gayist shows of the decade.

  8. Thomas says:

The 1966 Batman is a classic of one liners.

    “Let’s go, but… inconspicuously… through the window.”

Batman (reading a riddle): What has yellow skin and writes?
    Robin: A ballpoint banana.
    Batman: Of course.

  9. Lou Minatti says:

I loved the TV version as a kid and I still wonder why the series is not available on DVD. Very strange… the worst TV dreck was put on DVD, but not Batman. For corn’s sake, the Mr. Ed series was DVD’d. Love American Style was DVD’d.

Someone prove me wrong and show me where I can get the original Batman TV series. Not the movie, a set of the episodes.

  10. m.c. in l.v. says:

    Pow! Bang! Smash!

#6 – Don’t forget Lee Meriwether and Julie Newmar as Catwoman as well.

  11. Mr. Fusion says:

Ah yes, Good Times. I always thought that show had the best theme music of all ’60s shows.

  12. RBG says:

Ditto. From faded memory: Neil Hefti?

    RBG

  13. Lou Minatti says:

Paul, that’s not the television show. I am talking about a compilation of episodes by season.

  14. Widgethead says:

“Same Bat Time, Same Bat Channel” Simpler times to be sure, but heh, we all look back at our childhood with fondness, that is if you had a happy childhood. I did. Thanks for the memories.

  15. orangetiki says:

Nice. I have that movie on DVD and have a key ring with the villains from the movie on there. I still get asked to this day who are they.

  16. itwasadarkstormyknight says:

At least back then batman was moral. Now in the
Dark Knight the batman tortures two suspects for
    information.

No wonder it’s the first batman movie
that doesn’t use the word “batman” in the title.

  17. killer duck says:

Geek question, but how did a show in the 60s get shot in 16:9 aspect ratio?

  18. RBG says:

Most of these are clips from Batman movies. Maybe all?

    Neal Hefti.

    RBG

  19. Luc says:

This show was genius exactly for not taking Batman seriously. That’s why I hate the darker, supposedly “adult” interpretations of Batman. Like referring to a comic book as “graphic novel”. Who the hell are you kidding? Grow up already. I couldn’t even stand to sit through the whole of The Dark Knight. What kind of grownup can really take Batman seriously? You can only be excused for that if you’re 11 years old.

  20. Raster says:

I remember one episode where the villain’s “big plan” was to change Gotham’s water supply into grape jelly.

In order to make the point, they had lots of “Blob” type shots of jelly coming out of faucets and drinking fountains.

But the corker: a startled man comes out of the shower covered in jelly… AND HE’S WEARING JEANS!

  21. Beonarri says:

Well, you can like the dark Batman all you (I do), but Batman’s always been a guy in a costume. A grey and blue costume. Shaped like a giant stylized bat. This suit is made of rubber or spandex, depending on the time period. His arch-nemesis is a clown.

Make it as dark as you want, it is always going to contain elements of camp.

  22. Cursor_ says:

And to think that Adam West almost became James Bond! Could you smegging imagine?

    Cursor_

  23. Rick Cain says:

Its too bad they never made a campy remake of the Adam West / Burt Ward series. I loved that show as a kid. It taught me things like all bombs are round, black and have a long sparkly fuse and say bomb on the side.
