iMac unchanged? Faster, more RAM, choice of graphics cards — that’s your definition of “unchanged”?

  2. sargasso says:

    #1. I just ordered eight.

  3. Still no matt screen on the 15inch MacBook Pro, still tops out at only 4GB ram I’ll keep waiting with my old Power book.

Hey Apple I’ve got cash burning a hole in my pocket just release the right MacBook Pro

  4. Angel H. Wong says:

    “Microsoft keeps H1B folks.”

That’s management 101 for you, keep costs low or you’ll be the one fired.

  5. Greg Allen says:

I have the Atom in my Acer Aspire One and it works great. — not that I ever care much what chip runs my computers.

In this case, though, the Atom chip runs cool and lasts a long time on a small battery.

Anyway, I love my Aspire One — it boots up in 15 seconds! FINALLY, I found a worthy replacement for the Tandy 102. It only took twenty years!

  6. Grandpa says:

Maybe someone ought to figure out a way to make companies NOT want H1b workers. After all isn’t that the real solution to this economic downturn?

  7. QB says:

Hey Grandpa, you running that with XP or Linux (Linpus)?

  8. Somebody_Else says:

The Atom is a nifty little chip. I don’t think you’ve ever been able to get it without the motherboard, Intel wants you to use their chipset and such. My little MSI Wind netbook runs Ubuntu and Vista well, gets great battery life, and is supposedly easy to set up as a hackintosh. I’ve also put together a few Atom based point of sale machines that work well.

The problem with the Atom is that you’re stuck with the Intel 945 chipset and ICH7 southbridge with limited features. The 945 chipset actually uses more power (and generates more heat) than the Atom itself. You can’t get a decent graphics chip (as in you don’t get DVI or HDMI out), the graphics chip/Atom can’t handle HD video, there’s only one PCI slot, and they only have 2x SATA ports, so you can’t really put together a low power fileserver or media center.

I have an Acer Aspire One which came with Linpus so I changed it to Ubuntu Netbook Remix and put an extra gig of ram in it. Cool little machine for under 200 euros.
The Intel Atom processor is a good cpu let down by an old chipset. Waiting for these little mini ITX motherboards from Nvidia which will pair a dual core Atom with a Nvidia chipset which has north/southbridge and graphics on one physical chip. This will hopefully be my next HTPC as it should be able to handle 1080p.
If John is going to review a Atom motherboard these will be a big improvement when they come out.

    8, the eeebox has atom+hdmi

  11. Somebody_Else says:

    #11
Yes, but I don’t believe any of the OEM motherboards currently available have DVI/HDMI. Its aggravating since you can save ~$60 if you build the system yourself, and that’s with a nice 7200 RPM 640 GB drive (the eeebox has a 5400 RPM 160 GB IIRC).

The form factor of the eeebox is nice though, I’ll give it that.

  12. Rick Cain says:

YAWN! How about Apple release a machine with more than ONE DIMM slot, a case you can easily open without exotic tools and prayer, and the proper amount of ports on the back. The rest of the world is already going quad core, and Apple has an OS that actually uses all processors and Jobs gives Apple users 2 cores only.
