Birders United to Defeat Bush

Bird watchers unite!

In the United Kingdom the formidable political force of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds is frequently compared to the powers of the Teamsters Union in the United States. But most of the millions of bird people in America do not realize that they have the potential voting power to control the outcome of almost any presidential election in our country.

This is not just a utopian dream. All commentators agree the election this fall will be decided by a razor-thin margin. In recent presidential contests, a swing of just a few thousand votes would have changed the outcome in a number of key states.

Does anyone but me see a flaw in the logic? Or did I miss it when the birders all became 100-percent Democrats?

If they pulled this off, they would have something to crow about, for sure. We’ll see how long they hawk this idea. Not sure the concept will fly. But it would be a feather in someone’s cap if it did. Not sure Bush can duck this one. It may goose Kerry’s numbers. I have noticed that most organizations are too chicken to do such a thing. Then again this organization could be run by a quack for all I know. Whatever the case the whole idea is a hoot.

On behalf of your readers John, I have only one thing to say:

Toxic puns. There should be a law…..

I’ve been a volunteer at the Audubon Society for roughly 8 years. I still know very little about birds; I just help with the computers. Everyone I’ve ever met has been exceedingly moderate. But those birders do love birds, fish, and the supporting habitat. So it’s hard to imagine any birder voting for Bush.

It’s also hard to imagine birders pulling together to form a voting block. A few years ago, the National Audubon Society opted to refocus on education instead of policy and advocacy. Many of the activist types then moved on to other groups.

Also, each local chapter is largely autonomous from the state and national organizations. A little bit like United Way. So it’d be super tough for anyone to speak on behalf of all Audubon members.

birders united to defeat bush is a sound idea, since bush is responsible for so much environmental destruction. every single protection law is being assaulted by bush minions.

audubon, however, has its own problems. audubon endorses hunting/killing/slaughter/gun violence. many people cannot abide that organization because of its pro gun/pro killing attitude toward wildlife. it seems they dont understand that you unleash those gun wackos into the woods they shoot anything that moves.
