I’m getting old. I actually remember the days when the GOP was all about protecting freedoms, limiting government intrusion into our lives… Ah, the good old days!

CD From Minnesota GOP Also Gathers Data

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) – A computer disk that the Minnesota Republican Party prepared to support a ban on gay marriage has another purpose: gathering data on the politics of the people who view it.

And that’s stirred up a technological tempest on the Internet and among Democrats who say the disk will improperly gather data from people who run it on their computers. Privacy experts say they’re concerned that the GOP won’t adequately warn users that it’s collecting the data, and they worry where the information will end up.

Look what you started with your rootkit, Sony! You gave these people ideas!

“It’s an ageless part of American politics and I don’t think it’s anything that is particularly a big deal beyond that it’s high tech,” he said. “It’s not different than 30 years ago filling out a voter survey in your kitchen and then mailing it in.”

But some privacy advocates disagree. They said someone who fills out a survey on those sites is knowingly providing the groups with information, while it’s not clear from the Republican CD that the data is being transmitted back to the GOP, or even what other data about the user is being collected.

  1. Tony C says:

It’s too late to be worrying about anything that gathers information about you — the NSA et. al. are already digitizing every email, web page and phone call and storing them for their easy-access profiler search engine. What I want to know is, what the hell is the Geo. Bush doing selling weapons and striking nuke deals in the land of Ghandi? Something’s way wrong with this picture; and the funny thing is, nobody seems to see it.

  2. Korban_Dallas says:

Oh no – “They” got my email address while I posted this comment…

You need to loosen those straps on your tinfoil hat Tony.

  3. Sounds The Alarm says:

Anyone who fills out anything and expects his or her privacy to be protected is sniffin glue.

  4. JO says:

Oh my God Tony C.! They’re digitizing my emails. They’re converting my emails to a digital form! The Humanity!

Let me preface this with the fact that I’m a registered Republican…
When we are not in power, we will once again take up the cause of protecting freedoms and limiting government intrusion. Right now it is the Democrats job. I see a shift coming…

  6. 2xbob says:

This irritates me. I’m an old style republican. Now I dont agree with the campus repubs or campus dems. Lets just leave the gays alone. Since buracracy costs money, all this work is nothing but another budget blackhole. Who cares. Americans are obsesed with what other people think.

  7. malren says:

How can it collect data unless you fill out form fields? What kind of idiot thinks filling out form fields doesn’t send data to whoever gave you the disc?

  8. James says:

The point is you no longer fill out forms, they just look around for themselves with or without your consent. Spyware is bad enough when you have 3rd rate internet companies doing it, but when the government starts it up we have a real problem. They should be stopping others from doing it, not joining in.

  9. malren says:

James, you’re wrong. Did you read the story?

“To watch the video, a person has to go to an Internet site and punch in an ID code that tells the party who is viewing it. Once the video is going, viewers are asked questions on subjects like abortion, gun control and party preference.”

People have to manually submit this information. This spin that it;s like a rootkit is BS.

For the record, a political party is not “the government” either.
