More sucking

60TH ANNUAL TONY AWARDS / Tonys mark history, honor ‘History Boys’ — I used to love going to the theater, but generally speaking nowadays it stinks. The songs in a musical all sound the same to the point where the Simpsons constantly mock the genre. The dramas are both boring and depressing. And these plays and musicals are expensive to see. So I tuned to the Tony’s for about five minutes and turned them off when I quickly discovered that they were not even broadcast in HDTV!! How lame. Then there is this commentary, below:

Though still the highest profile theater awards ceremony in the country, the Tony is a vestige of an earlier age when Broadway was almost synonymous with American professional theater. That was before the development of off-Broadway, off-off Broadway and the vast number of highly professional regional theaters throughout the nation, where most of the most exciting work originates. Despite the inclusive-sounding names of the presenting organizations — the American Theatre Wing and the League of American Theatres and Producers — only work staged at a mere 39 Broadway houses is eligible for a Tony.

It’s as if only the products of a few Hollywood studios were eligible for the Academy Awards, or only three or four old TV networks’ shows could be considered for the Emmys.

Maybe it’s time to give up the ghost and close up shop.

  1. Wow..they suck worse than I thouhgt..nary a comment!!!

We are at an all time low for entertainment in the US if not the entire world. All pop music is churned corporate crap. It is the rare good song that makes it to the top of the charts.

There hasn’t been an original film out of Hollywood in years. My God we are down to remaking mediocre movies like The Oman and The Poseidon Adventure.

As far as Broadway is concerned when Disney took over well what did you expect?

There’s plenty of good entertainment out there, it’s just a right pain and too much work to try to find any of it.

Tip – if you’re looking at the Top 40 singles or Top 5 movies of the week, you may need to look elsewhere.

If New York is really such a sophisticated place, how come their one indigenous art form — the Broadway musical — is so schlocky?!?!

This is an art form worthy of Branson Missouri, not a supposed cultural center. I have never been to New York but I have to wonder if it is a sophistaced as they think of themselves.
