Our Lady of Perpetual Carbon

There’s only one solution. Science fiction stories have been written (as well as proposed for real) about having a priesthood who guards atomic waste dumps as they decay over tens of thousands of years. Sounds like we need the same for this. Any volunteers to be a Carbon Priest?

Carbon dioxide sequestration isn’t a great global warming solution unless we develop less leaky equipment or commit to regular re-sequestering, according to a paper published in Nature Geoscience. If the containers used don’t leak less than one percent every thousand years, atmospheric carbon would have to be monitored carefully and resequestered on a regular basis over tens of thousands of years in order to match the effects of reducing carbon emissions. Otherwise, sequestration would only slow the warming, not stop it.

[…Dr. Gary Shaffer] noted that current methods for both types of sequestration have leakages rate that are too high, and would only lead to a delayed warming of the atmosphere. According to his calculations, any method of sequestration would have to leak less than 1 percent of its volume every one thousand years in order to fully prevent global warming.

Dr. Shaffer notes that we could use leakier vessels if we committed to reharvesting the carbon every once in a while. However, this process would have to be kept up for tens of thousands of years in order to let the opportunity for warming to pass. In effect, to rely on carbon sequestration would necessitate tens of thousands of years of work and careful monitoring of a difficult-to-measure global leakage rate.

“…let the opportunity for warming to pass.” Hmmm….

  1. bobbo, still working on special relativity says:

Eventually I would think a big pile of co2 would become a “resource” to combine with “H” atoms and thereafter make just about anything we want to? What can we do with co2–theoretically and practically?

Junk Science is like Standard Politics: selling solutions that don’t work.

    Stoopid Hoomans.

Stupiduous leaving creatures on earth is “humans” They know what is going to happen next in-spite of so many preventions,I don’t understand why …The final judgement will be “Global warming” people after this will realize better i think..

  3. LDA says:

    We already have one.

This ignores the fact that there have been higher levels of CO2 in the atmosphere in the prehuman past.

  6. Benjamin says:

Stupid. Creates more problems then it solves. I’ll let the trees take the carbon dioxide out of the air and sequester the wood in the form of grandfather clocks and Shaker furniture.

So…the thrust of what you’re saying is that it’s pointless, there’s nothing we can do, we’ve already destroyed ourselves. Well, not US, but our grandchildren and their grandchildren that will have to deal with the climate and nuclear waste for thousands of years. Good times!

  9. WmDE says:

Sequestering carbon would best be done by converting it to its crystal form. Diamonds are forever.

The diamond product would be very useful. Diamond sand for construction work. A diamond roadway that lasts for hundreds or thousands of years. (Might be a bit rough on tires.) Diamonds measured in tons not carats.

Converting free carbon to diamond would take a lot of energy. If this energy came from fossil fueled sources then carbon released would be greater that the carbon sequestered.

I have a better idea. Outlaw lawns. In fact outlaw any clearing of land. Weeds are our friends. Weeds are the first step to reforestation.

I am not saying this because there are two plus acres of grass that my wife says needs to be mowed and my ancient Ford tractor has gone all green on me and refuses to emit any greenhouse gases.

What can you make with CO2??
    easy ..CRACK IT..

Carbon and Oxygen. THAT would be the BEST alternative..
And if you think about Photosynthesis..THATS all its doing. it takes the CARBON OUT.
The problem WE HAVE, is that we can not find a CHEAP way to do this…Supposedly.

  11. deowll says:

CO2 has a lot of uses. The odds are great that most of what is in the air is going to get sucked up by life. CO2 on Earth is a trace gas for a reason.

    Priesthood, eh? What’s it pay?

  13. RSweeney says:

    Priesthood???

Greenies are 90% the way there already.

  14. UncDon says:

    Uncle Dave:

The symbol for Carbon is “C”. The young lass in the picture is backgrounded with the letters “AG”, which is the symbol for Silver.

    I’ll let it slide …

  15. Buzz says:

In less than 100 years, all human energy consumption will have to come from solar, wind, wave or geothermal sources. Nobody then will give a rat’s about sequestered carbon from the Bad Old Days.

  16. Al Gore Has My Hamster says:

I just farted. Sequester that a-holes.
